Maybe someday

A new company took over a month after my loved one moved in. We kept hearing things would get better and they would have more staff, but that did not happen. The food looked very good, but the portions were really big and nothing was tailored to my moms interests. It did not seem like they tried to cater to any individual needs or wants as far as the food goes.

Run far away for Holi Senior Living

I found the staff not engaging with residents, instead they would be talking to each other or on their phones. At times it would be 45 minutes until a staff member would answer the call button. The administrators will tell you anything to have your parents be in their care, whether it's a certain diet or something, then to find out it wasn't true. The care was not good, the staff punctuated the air mattress and did nothing about it so my father had to lay on flat plastic that cause skin sores. It took weeks to get a prescription for his eyes. The facility does not have phone or cable tv, instead you have to rely on their internet for streaming tv and VOIP for phone service. Try explaining steaming services to your elderly parents. If the resident could not attend a meal, they would be feed what was left over after the other residents ate. Due to my parent being bedridden most of his meals were peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I would not recommend Holi Senior Living to anyone, the place is nothing but a money grab.

Overall a very nice community and excellent staff

I believe the quality of his care is very good. The problem we have in this case facility is when he needs medical attention transportation is only available by setting up an appointment. I.e. dental or medical. He's a Walker and when he falls down and gets hurt, they call 911 for an ambulance to transport him to the hospital which is not included in the monthly fees. They say they provide hospice services but if anything medical is involved they can't provide that. The staff really have been very helpful and seem genuinely to care about their clients. We believe he is getting very good care.

We toured with Holi Senior Living and we did not care for this facility. When we were there walking around, there were no staff or residents that we could see. Our tour was scheduled and they also had no idea that we were even coming so it was disorganized. It took them a while to find a staff member who was able to show us around the place .

Lack of care and attention

I would not recommend this facility to anyone who wants their loved one to be well taken care of. The lack of care and attention to the cleanliness of the residents is appalling. They provide the excuse of not giving residents showers by saying that the resident refused to have a shower, but they won't spend the time to convince the resident that they need the care. I agree with a previous reviewer that there are many times that I have been there when the "caretaker" are busy looking at their phones instead of tending to residents (and the "reason" that they are looking at instructions for other residents doesn't ring true). Obviously, the caretakers have been told that a resident says "no" to a care task, that the caretaker doesn't need to do that. A resident with Alzheimers will not know what they need, so it should be up to the caretaker to talk them into taking a shower, putting on clean clothes, etc. I am looking into other options to move my loved one to another facility.

Better training

It was hard to get them to understand that the patient was allergic to morphine and the hospice folks were taking her from once Every 4 hours - they bumped it up to once every hour. They need better training for dealing with a patient on hospice, especially the feeding of the patient. My wife could not swallow, so the food was being packed up in her nasal passage.

Poorly managed facility

My mother was a resident for 6 years. Was terrific until new management took over a year ago and the place fell apart. Good quality dropped, ratio of care givers to resident dropped, they did away with transition plans between shifts and gave everyone iPads to try and figure out the care, medical changes and behavioral issues. Staff lies about care, management is over bearing to them, so very high turnover. The days of personal relationships with residents went out the door. They are transitioning from memory care to assisted living. That way they maximize their revenue per resident while reducing care, staff and cost. My mother was totally neglected along with others. When I contacted the state their response was to evict her. Really a heartless bunch of people. Advocate for your loved ones because institutional care is abysmal. Absolutely would NOT recommend.

Horrible place for memory care

My husband was in Harbour Pointe memory care for a total of 3 weeks, the first 2 weeks with 24hr care paid by me. He was supposed to be ok to be cared for by staff according to [name removed] (useless nurse) so I left him 1 week without private nursing and he fell, aspirated and lay on floor nobody knows how long. He lost his life due to this and the fact that he had pneumonia and the nurse [name removed] friend didn’t have enough experience to detect it. He had dirty clothes on every day when I got there and food on his Face. I have to live with the fact I trusted this place with him. I hope after reading this you do your research and find a different place for your loved ones. There have been citations against this place more than once.

New management at Hawthorne Gardens

In November 2022, I wrote a positive review about Hawthorne Gardens and its wonderful executive director. Recently there has been a corporate shakeup and she has been let go and many other staff have also left or been fired. Rates have gone up and services have deteriorated badly, including care, food, cleaning, social activities. The residents are in shock and morale is at an all time low. Not a good time to place your loved one here.

Incredibly Awful

The staff are exceptionally rude and use intimidation to get their way. You are not allowed to ask questions of any of the staff or you will be threatened with banishment from the property. While where are some good individual staff members, if you visit off hours you will see most of them on their phones and really annoyed at being bothered by you or the residents. It's all window dressing and no substance. If you care about your loved one, do not let them go here.

Not happy

We placed my mom here because it seemed so wonderful at first. There were a couple of her caregivers that were amazing but the rest of the staff could care less. The emergency pulls in there room, we were told could be pulled and someone would be right there well we had to pull it twice because my mom fell. Nobody came I had to go out to the station where the staff was hanging out and tell them we needed help. The activities director at the time basically did nothing with them. My mom fell in her room several times and she laid on the floor for who knows how long because I found her there. What about the so called sensors in their room that can detect a fall well I don’t really even know if they work or are even real because they did not detect my moms falls. The nurses there were horrible too. My mom passed away within in a few months of being there. I could not care for her at home otherwise I would have taken her out. It’s a beautiful facility but looks are deceiving.

I had my dad here & at first they were fine. The management changed & all of a sudden staff changed as well. 2021 my dad was still there. Dad would not eat. They started giving him Ensure 3X a day. Then I was told he was pushing, shoving people & hitting the caretakers. The Ensure has high fructose corn syrup which impacted his gout causing joint pain & swelling. They then put him on anti-depressants, so many of them that he was dizzy & fell all the time. The only time I could see and hug him was in the ER. He could no longer walk, talk & had pneumonia as he could no longer swallow properly. Fieldstone would only check on him every 2 hours, so he could have choked & they would not know. I moved him in April and had him put in the hospital to get over the pneumonia. As I moved him he was nodded off over his plate & food was dripping down his face and clothes. He is at another facility where he is treated respect & care. He smiles at everyone including me when I visit him often.

Hawthorne Gardens is NOT What it Advertises

Our mother has lived at Hawthorne Gardens Senior Living since the fall of 2018, first in Assisted Living and for the past year in Memory Care. In this time there have been three different companies running the place, all of them promising to improve things. Staff turnover is alarming with many only lasting a week or two. They are ill trained and over worked. They have little to no supervision. Memory Care is far worst than assisted living. Our mother's room is often filthy. Your feet stick to the bathroom floor and her rug hasn't been vacuumed in 3 months. It literally stinks. Laundry is not done regularly and when it is done, clothes are often ruined. Our mother often does not have the basic necessities like toilet paper and kleenex. If we did not check on her EVERY DAY, I would fear for her overall safety. Hawthorne Gardens is not what it appears to be in their advertisements or on the tour. The tour is so ridiculously deceiving.

We notified the receptionist and a facilities person that the door to my Mom's apartment was hard to open and asked that they adjust her door (and other doors in the facility) to accommodate the abilities of the residents. The doors weren't fixed. My 90 year old mother fell backwards when her hand slipped off the door handle because she had to put her weight into opening the door. She was on the floor, used the alarm to summon help - no one came. She dragged herself to the telephone and called the front desk. Eventually, help arrived. Apparently another resident incident was occurring at the same time and that accounted for the delay. The facility RN cleared her to do her normal activities because my Mom said she didn't hurt too bad. My Mom clearly has osteoporosis as most 90-year old women would be expected to have. No one called me or any family members to tell us what had happened. Mom had a hair appointment at the downstairs beauty shop and she walked downstairs to the appointment. After sitting in the beauty shop chair, she started having pain. She asked an attendant to get her a wheel chair and take her back to her apartment. The attendant assured her she could walk back on her own and left her to do so. By the time she got back to her apartment, she was in deep pain and called my sister to take her to the ER, where we learned her hip was broken. She went into surgery the next day and 5 days later passed away, my brother and I were with her. Cause of death was surgical complications secondary to broken hip and osteoporosis. After she passed, the doors were fixed. The facility director assured me they were looking in to why it took so long for help to arrive to her apartment. The RN supervisor apologized for missing the, to me obvious, probability of injury after she fell, everyone was sorry they had not contacted family members (my sister lives 5 minutes away) or gotten a better medical evaluation, and that they allowed my Mother to walk after her fall. I believe weight bearing activity after her fall was a big factor in her injury. The attendant who did not get her a wheel chair was identified and counseled. I believe the series of mis-steps at Fieldstone killed my Mother. My mother was a beautiful soul. She was mentally acute and relatively independent at the time of her death. She came from a family with considerable longevity, and I thought I had years with her still. I will forever regret allowing her to move to Fieldstone (she did not want to move in with me or other family members). It's been over 1-1/2 years since she died. My grief is still acute; I will miss her forever. If you love your parent, I do not recommend moving them to Fieldstone.
