Arbor Landing at Pawleys

My mom resides in the memory care unit of this facility, which is separate from the assisted living side and comes at a higher cost. Unfortunately, there is a noticeable difference between the two areas. The assisted living side is beautiful-it has an elegant dining room with tablecloths and cloth napkins, a well-maintained courtyard, and a wide variety of activities. In contrast, the memory care unit feels neglected. The courtyard is not well maintained, with broken chairs and unkept landscaping, and even simple touches like filled birdfeeders are often overlooked. Dining in memory care is also disappointing. The food quality is poor, and meals are often served in a disorganized way. Residents are not given knives, even when needed, and basic items like napkins, beverages, or silverware are not consistently provided unless requested. At times, meals are served out of order or incomplete, which adds to the frustration. The activity schedule is another concern. The printed monthly calendar is frequently inaccurate, and many listed activities do not actually take place. There are also far fewer activities offered compared to assisted living, and memory care residents rarely benefit from outside entertainment or events. While the staff is consistently friendly and kind, there seems to be a lack of follow-through and oversight. Communication and attention to detail are often lacking, and responsibilities sometimes fall on family members to monitor and address concerns. Staffing also appears limited, particularly on weekends when administrative support is not available. There used to be someone at the front entrance on weekends, but that is no longer the case. I was also disappointed by a recent rate increase. When I initially signed the contract, I was told to expect about a 4% increase, but the actual increase was 7%. After raising the issue, it was adjusted back to 4%, which I appreciated. The facility itself is very attractive, and the caregivers are patient, compassionate, and clearly dedicated to the residents. It takes a special kind of person to do this work, and I truly value their efforts. That said, many of the concerns I have seem to stem from management and a lack of consistent standards in the memory care unit. With better oversight and accountability, these issues could be significantly improved. Many residents do not have family members advocating for them regularly, so it's especially important that the facility maintains a high level of care and attention for everyone.

Friendly facility

Arbor landing was a good place for my parents, they were treated well. Staff was friendly and helpful. One thing I wish we had done was securing my mom's rings. I think it happened at Georgetown Hospital, her rings were stolen when she stayed overnight.

Enjoying Arbor Ridge

Now that my mom has been there been a year, I can say that the amount of activities, cleanliness and communication is still just as nice and consistent compared to when she first moved in. My mom has made friends and meets twice a day to play cards with her friend group in addition to the other activities. She really loves the food, she always says it's very good and she's full after every meal. The residents are all very friendly and welcoming and the staff have always been pleasant to her and myself. The rent has gone up at the beginning of the year but I can't say I'm surprised about that. I mentioned before that I wish some information was shared up front by the sales associate we met with last year, I feel like she was kind of pushy to get us to sign the lease without giving us much time to consider our options. I've since been able to get my mom on a waitlist for a unit that has the features she wants since we didn't know it was an option when we first signed. But I've had no issues with any of the administrative staff otherwise. I'd definitely recommend Arbor Ridge. My mom is safe, engaged and happy.

Arbor Landing at Hampstead

Arbor Landing is a fantastic facility with knowledgeable staff. They demonstrate remarkable patience and attentiveness towards residents in memory care. The staff gets to know each resident and caters to their unique needs. While I acknowledge that staff turnover among CNAs is a common issue in healthcare, I believe it would be beneficial to have an additional CNA on each shift to improve the staff-to-resident ratio as the stage of the disease varies in each resident. The activity director organizes fantastic events and works diligently to include all the residents. There’s an activity calendar for each day, but unfortunately, there isn't always sufficient staff on the weekends to lead these events. I know my LO is safe at Harbor Landing Memory Care and a professional team is there 24/7 to help her through this horrible disease when I can't be there.

Our families experience

The staff (with the exception of maintenance) is phenomenal, so kind and very helpful. The maintenance is definitely an issue. My mother has had a couple of issues inside her apartment and filed work orders. The maintenance staff never shows up in a prompt manner until I have to get involved and reach out to management. It's frustrating. The food and wait staff in the dining room has had significant turnover and the quality had been sub-par at times but they are working hard at trying to make it better. Overall, we are very satisfied with the facilities, the cost, and most of all I feel my mother is cared about and looked after, which is the most important thing.

Our Family experience

Best place in Raleigh. Management did everything they could to help us get adequate care for my brother in law. No other place helped us like Falls River. Not only on one occasion but twice. [name removed] is the best. Our family is extremely grateful for what she did for us. No other facility in Raleigh cares for the welfare of their patients like Falls River.

Review for Carteret Landing Assisted Living and Memory Care

It was very easy to work with them on getting our family member into their facility. It is a very clean and well kept facility. We have only found a few glitches in their system in the year we have had our family member in there. They have some problems with their food service staff. They don't have enough of them. We pay the highest level of Assisted Living Care. This includes medication distribution and making sure all the meds are taken properly. They have a serious lack of communication with the facility. It can take several days to get a return phone call. We also pay for laundry service. It seems that they have someone new or a problem with their washing machine as we have had to bring home laundry that was absolutely not laundered and had been placed in the closet and told it was clean. This is a serious problem. We know that ever since Covid the health care industry has taken a severe hit with not being able to retain employees. We try to take it with a grain of salt. For the most part the staff is friendly and know our family member well. It is by far the best assisted living facility in Carteret County all other concerns aside!! I would recommend moving a family member into their care.

Friendly staff - but be careful with personal, valuable items

Be careful of jewelry being worn that patients might be on medication or asleep. My mom had rings stolen when she was sleeping, but was out of it on meds. It was acceptable, my dad was comfortable and the staff was friendly. Families should be aware of the limitations of their loved ones, that could be taken advantage of.

Good experience overall

I think more encouraging the residents to participate in activities would help.... maybe make it a contest or something. The food my mom constantly complained about. Not much variety and she swears the eggs were powdered.... otherwise it was pretty well run.

It was a nice place for my dad to live once he relocated to Hampstead. I would recommend to others looking that they take a tour. I do not know what it is like now but if I was looking for an independent living spot for a relative in this area, I would take a tour.
