A Place for Mom has scored Pacifica Senior Living with 8.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 1,231 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Pacifica Senior Living has 8,761 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.4 out of 5.
I submit this review with great resentment and disappointment. I want to report what I believe to be very unprofessional and discriminatory treatment by [name removed], director of Pacifica Senior Living. Here are the details. My sister is a recovering alcoholic and when she applied for housing at Pacifica, there was full disclosure that she was 59 and has late stage cirrhosis of the liver (hence her need for assisted living). [Name removed] and other staff members were great -they let her tour the facility and put a down payment on a unit. The required doctor's report was faxed to Pacifica approximately 10 days ago. After they received the doctor's report Pacifica scheduled the required nurse’s assessment at their facility, which was done on [date removed]. My sister and a family member also met with another staff member that day and schedule a move-in date for [date removed]. Pacifica happily accepted full payment for the first month, with no mention of “red flags” in her application. Three days later, I received a call from [name removed], the director of Pacifica, because she wanted to talk to me about the "red flags.” [Name removed] mentioned her age (which they knew week’s ago) and then proceeded to ask me questions about my sister’s drinking, when did she have her last drink, did I know Pacifica served alcohol, and then asked “what are we supposed to do if she starts drinking?” I was pretty taken aback by the questions. We never asked them to monitor my sister for alcohol intake. I said I was curious if [name removed] was screening all residents about alcohol concerns. I also reminded her that we used a referral service that specifically referred my sister to facilities that would take residents who were 59 if they needed care. Pacifica was on that list. Then, [name removed] informed me that the doctor's report from 10 days ago said my sister didn't need assisted living. Wow! I guess they never thought to disclose this to my SISTER when Pacifica received the report, or when she went for the nurse’s visit, or when she gave them a check and scheduled a move-in date. [Name removed] said she was calling the licensing board and would get back to me. Well, you guessed it! Her placement was rejected based on “her age and the doctor's report.” I must admit I was not very kind in my response to [name removed]. Why ask me about my sister’s alcohol usage when she was being rejected for unrelated reasons? I question the motives of the director and believe the rejection was actually based on my sister’s disease and appearance. It’s indefensible that these other issues weren’t addressed immediately so my sister could have looked elsewhere. And adding insult to injury - [name removed] still has not called my sister to notify her that she has been rejected by Pacifica. Nor is her refund check ready. [Name removed] is off for the weekend. Just beware. If your loved one isn’t particularly affluent, attractive, or has a socially unacceptable disease, there is no room at Inn Pacifica

My mother lived here for a handful of years. Right after Christmas she fell in one of the bathrooms. The emergency button did not work. So she had to crawl to her bedroom with a broken leg to get to her cell phone. I contacted the ED and he did some testing and told us that everything worked fine. My brother went to the house and proved that one of the buttons did not work. We have requested several times to have documentation around testing and maintenance and no one has provided us with this information. I have reached out to the Corporate office as well, I talked to one person there and have never heard back. Other residents of this property have also had issues with the emergency response system. Do not live here. It is not safe and the people running the property do not care about the residents.

It is impossible to recommend you go elsewhere with sufficient emphasis to match just how bad a choice it would be to put your aging parent here. I am speaking specifically about the Memory Care facility as I have no experience with the larger assisted care portion of this operation. Both of my parents were in the Memory Care unit. It seemed like a great option at first. After about 6 months, I got a call in the middle of the night telling me my mother was on her way to the ER to be tested for a UTI. I asked if she was alone. They said ‘yes.’ I exploded with facts like she is deeply paranoid, is tremendously exit seeking, doesn’t know her name and is sure folks are out to get her. They tried to assure me that she would be fine. Think about that: these people were making choices for my mother's health and well being every day and this is what their decision-making capacity turned out to look like. I asked why she needed to be in an ER for a routine test that could have waited for me to get there the next day. They had no answer. When she finally went over the deep end, the Director of Nursing called me up and told me I had to come get her, they were no longer able to care for her,…. as in ‘right now’. I said it took me weeks to get all the paperwork together to get her into Brookdale, how could I possibly get her into any reasonable place on this short notice. Suffice it to say, she was unimpressed. My mother died, so it became a non-issue. I wanted to remove my father from this nightmare but he was absolutely lost without my mother and I didn’t want to make his road any more difficult by putting him in a new facility so quickly on the heels of her death. Just one month ago, I lived the same exact story with the same exact Director of Nursing. She told me to come get my father, they were no longer an appropriate facility for him. I’m OK with the idea that he needed to move on but there was no conversation like ‘We have concerns about your father here and are giving you a 30-day notice so that you can make other arrangements.” I would be hard to articulate how ferociously stressful it was to find a new place with the idea that if I couldn’t find said place he was coming home with me, diapers and all. I was able to get him into an interim facility, but please note that this interim place charges $10,000.00 a month. Imagine that new bill in your monthly picture. But it bought me a month to find him a new home. By the way, this interim place called the folks at Brookdale saying they couldn’t understand why he shouldn’t go back to there as my father was able to walk 300 feet on his own, feed himself, and make transfers. Madame de Pain-in-the-butt had no answer beyond ‘we don’t want him.’ My mother, under the influence of Alzheimer’s was a tough customer but my father became very gentile and kind. Why the Brookdale staff just woke up one day and decided he wasn’t a fit is way beyond me but it put me in terribly stressful situation. My wife and I are not qualified to offer the 24/7 care he needs and were at serious risk of being thrust into that nightmare given Brookdale’s apparent ‘get out, now’ policy. Your loved one doesn’t need the abuse. You don’t need the abuse. It’s hard enough navigating life with a parent in dementia. You don’t need the exponentially greater level of pain they offered me in your life

This place is smoke and mirrors. Beautiful on the outside and looks are deceiving. The food is horrible and kitchen staffed by very inexperience people. They put food out that is the same thing over and over and just call it something different. The vegetable of the day last night was mushrooms, onions and peppers. That is not a proper vegetable side dish. The cleaning is a bit subpar, and not really a thorough cleaning. Residents have emergency buttons but have been told to call 911 as no one will respond to emergency buttons in the cottages. Concerns me with my elderly mother living there. They have community meeting where the supposedly listen to their customers, but nothing happens. This is a for profit business, and these are their customers, not children to brush aside because they don't know what they are talking about.

This is absolutely the worst place. DO NOT move your loved ones into this establishment. The staff has a huge turnover rate - you almost never talk to the same person twice, even within a small period of time. We pay almost $500 per month (one of the highest charges for meds we saw as we looked for a facility for her) to manage and hand out meds for my mom. And they NEVER get it right. The doctors don't call before making changes to her prescription regimen. Whenever we do talk to someone about a problem, the verbiage goes something like this, 'I'm so sorry this is happening. This (fill in the blank) is what were doing to try to rectify the situation. I didn't realize this type of thing has happened in the past (because it's a new person in whatever position). I will call you back to let you know how we have rectified the problem.' Never get a call back. As I write this, my mom is going on day two of no meds (a 3x's a day med) because they didn't get the doctor and Rx in place before the weekend (it's now a Wednesday). I can't say loudly enough: Don't put someone here!!

My loved one was only here for 6 days and we ended up moving her out because the staff was incompetent. We were expecting the staff to be able to take care of her and it was just a mess. One night, there was only 1 nurse running two or three buildings. It’s also really noisy at night and some of the residents even smoke inside. There was even one nurse who had the flu and then continued to come into the room to help my loved one. I would not recommend this facility to other families.

Pacifica Fort Myers has been under new ownership several times in 17 years. Poorly trained staff, under staffed, lack of attention to details promised. My mother was there for three months. Every visit was worse than the previous visit. Meals were inadequate and always cold. There are no activities. Management never to be found. Residents wander the halls daily. The TV on all day. I do not recommend this place. But I do believe they take Medicaid.

We had our family member there for a short period of time. The food was loaded with carbs and covered in hot sauce and lukewarm several times I had to heat it up in the microwave myself. Three different executive directors in 6 months. The caregivers very young 20 years old all the way to 78 years old. We had different caretakers in our Cottage everyday. Several caretakers would work for a couple days then quit. They only make 9.50 hourly rate is all they make. As one caregiver put it you get what you pay for it's pretty hard to motivate a minimum wage worker to change a diaper. Sometimes the entertainment director would put scrubs on and pass out pills when they were short which is often. Overall I have to give this place no stars. The communication is criss-crossed. the staff is absolutely miserable from the executive director all the way down to the dishwasher. The caretakers should be well-trained and that's the company responsible to have qualified staff on duty which they are negligent the training that is offered is a couple days OJT following around another caretaker that has only work there for a week or so. Take your family member somewhere else. And that is the truth.

Recommend another memory care facility. Saw a number of communicative and vibrant residents move into this community and decline within a short amount of time. I understand this is a horrible disease; however, these residents were promised a healthy and caring environment and that is not being provided at Pacifica Peoria. The following are just a few of the situations that we encountered with this community that continues to win awards: - Pest control issues including multiple BEDBUG outbreaks - Improper transfer of immobile patients (to the point of resident pain) - Residents shared toothbrushes due to resident's individual hygiene products not being properly maintained - Poor room upkeep - inc resident bathroom - Constant change in management (at least 5 changes) - Inconsistent staffing (caretakers limited interaction with residents) - Some developed relationships where residents referred to them as their bosses.

I did not like this community. We found a mouse in his air vent. The staff were rude and not helpful. The management informed us that he was injured in his wheel chair that he did not have. They did not follow up with family on the care that he received after being in the hospital. They lack communication. My father was not placed in the correct area of the community due to he was able to do alot on his own without assistance. I would not recommend this community to other families for care.

We were told the location did not have a state license yet but would have it by the 2nd week of January 2016. Our deposit check was cashed on December 21, 2015. We were told by Dwight on January 6, 2016 to give our 20 day notice at my dad's current Independent Living home and that he can move into the Meridian on the 30th of January 'no problem' January 11th is where it all started to go down hill, the Meridian started playing games with the required paperwork. First they needed a doctor statement, we provided, then they needed his current home health provider statement we provided, then they started to claim 'concerns that they could not handle his care'. On January 13th during a call from us, calls are always from us, there is no return calls from the staff at The Meridian. [name removed] informs us that they will not accept our father because he takes anti-depressants. [name removed] has probably the worst customer service of anyone at The Meridian. She will roll her eyes in front of you, she will whisper under her breath in front of you, she will make you fell very uncomfortable about your experience. January 15th, my family has a meeting with the RN,[name removed], to discuss our father's care because at this point we still truly believe in The Meridian, we believe in the care they can provide, we believe in the concepts they have. [name removed] explains to us that [name removed] should not have said what she said and that 'some people do not belong on the phones'. We left the meeting feeling more confident in The Meridian. We were told that the State's inspection was scheduled for January 25th, then it would be 21 days after that for their license to be issued and dad could move in. Since it was clear that their license was not going to happen till into February, yet my father had to be out of this apartment on the 30th as it was already re-rented. We booked a hotel for him to stay in with home health care hoping it would be temporary till the Meridian receive their license. January 22nd again, us calling them because we have heard nothing for another week regarding their license or my dad's acceptance. Spoke with [name removed], we are informed that they have decided that our father's care is not above their scope or license and that they would love for him to move in. Oh pure relief on our part, we are so glad that this all worked out, or so we thought. Because our father needs to be out of his current place on January 30th but The Meridian will not be ready for him to move in right away, we plan on him moving into a Hotel and we speak to Kimberly [removed] on January 22, 2016. We ask if we can move his stuff into his apartment with The Meridian to avoid getting storage unit. She says yes as long as we sign the lease first. January 26th us calling again speak with [name removed] to schedule an appt. to sign the lease so that we can move my father's stuff straight from the U-haul into his apartment. She informs us that she is not available to sign the lease till February 1st. We ask how did the inspection go, she says it is not till the 27th January, so again misinformation. I show up at The Meridian at my scheduled time to sign the lease on February 1st with [name removed], have the U-Haul so I can move everything out that day and get it returned to stop the $40/day rental fee. Right off the bat[name removed] is appearing rushed and hurried, like I just stopped in. She starts to refer to my father has 'him', or is that him, very rude and in a derogatory way. She asks why I thought it would be ok to move his stuff into the apartment, 'where did you get that idea?' I explain she told me. [name removed] then says that the Nurse needs to do an assessment on my father before I could sign the lease, could I get my dad in for the assessment now, the agreement that I signed when giving the refundable $2000 deposit clearly stated that once the nurse assessment is done you will only be entitled to $1500 refund, you loose $500 right away. I start to realize that something is going on, it has felt for a while that they were trying to get us to cancel, and that all of the hoops that they were putting us through was to discourage us, maybe they over booked, maybe they just needed everyone's $2000 deposits for operating cash I do not know. She then informs me that they failed the state inspection on January 27th and that it would be a couple of weeks to fix the issues, get another inspection scheduled and then another 21 days before anyone can move in, so another minimum of 6 weeks. At this point I knew that we had to cancel and start over finding a new place, how discouraging. We gave our official cancellation on February 2nd and requested our full $2000 refund as we did not do the nurse assessment therefore we were contractually entitled to the full $2000. We were told that the refund would be to us in 2 weeks, that seemed reasonable. Today is February 24th still no refund, over 3 weeks later, we have had to give another $2000 deposit at a new place. We have called The Meridian 3 times in the last week asking for the refund and each time get a complicated excuse, excuse is all it is. I have no faith that this refund will ever happen and i will have to hire an attorney if I don't just give up first. We have been informed by other sources now as well that The Meridian has been trying to get their license for over 9 months and keep failing their inspections. There is no phone number for the corporate office on the Pacifica Senior Living website which is the parent company of The Meridian. [name removed] today did give us a number for the person that we are to talk to about our refund check at the corporate office, but wouldn't you know, it is not the right person's number. This has been a very frustrating process and a waste of a lot of valuable time and A TON OF MONEY. Do not be fooled by the 'Sales pitch' of this place, yes it is gorgeous, yes it sounds like a great concept, but I doubt you will ever get to move in. Then you top everything I get an e-mail from [name removed] today asking me to submit a review to the Senioradvisor website for them as well as other social network sites, why yes Kimberly, I will gladly submit a review, here it is, I will be going to the news stations and placing a complaint with the state Department of Health as well.
