Communication issues

We were not informed of the need for a medical review and the need for a PPD test until a few days before the move. Unfortunately there was a turn over in personnel between when we toured and when we moved my mother to the facility which may have affected the communication process

Windchime was okay but you know how you just get a feeling sometimes about a place? This place was okay but I just like another place better. It may have been because of the stage my mother was in. Some of these places are for people who are higher functioning and still able to be involved with activities and things like that. Windchime seemed like this - good for people who still can do some functioning. My mom is just at a point where she can't.

Bad billing explanation

It's only been a couple of months and all I hear is stuff from my mom, and she likes to complain anyways so its hard to figure out whats from truth or what's just typical mom. When I go out there everyone's bene helpful, it's basically what I would expect but it's nothing that would blow my socks off and I don't know what they would do to change that. The only problem I've had with them is billing. When I first signed up, the one thing that bothers me, is that they've got those care levels and that wasn't explained well to me at all, there was no conversation, they told me about it and said it would be based off of the evaluation but they never told me about the point system. I assumed she would be level 1 and when I got the bill it was level 2. They tried to explain that she's not high level 2 but she's in that category, I wanted to know whats in level 2 care, if I'm paying the whole 600 dollar bills for the level 2 package I want to recieve everything I'm paying for, even if she doesn't need it. Besides that, they've done a nice job with prescriptions, getting her on medications, they have someone who comes to the door to take her to her meals, she can walk but they assist her, and I appreciate all of that. The people are friendly, the food is good, the menu's nice, her room is nice it's just the whole billing fiasco.

At the end of the day, it gets a four out of five with a room for improvement

Mainly, it seems like your executive staff is overstretched. It was always very hard to get papers filled out. It was always very hard to get someone to talk to me who I needed to talk to. They accepted my mother without really knowing her condition they really need to look into who they're accepting first my mother only lasted their five weeks because she was wandering, and they couldn't be responsible for that. She was diagnosed with dementia as soon as I took her out of there obviously she had it when she went in there. It doesn't happen overnight like I said only there five weeks. It was a real uncomfortable and unfortunate situation and then I try to charge me the $[removed] for the community fee.

We sent [name removed] there to rebuild her strength after a fall. She had PT coming to see her which was great. However, instead of encouraging her to walk and build strength they pushed her everywhere in a wheelchair. Then they tried to tell us she needed more time there. We decided that if she was going to walk again she needed to go home.

Pro and cons

It's a good middle of the road option. It still feels pretty expensive. Clean, safe, friendly staff. Sometimes it feels like staff aren't delivering the level of care that my dad is paying for, ie assistance with changing close, shower hygiene.

Staff not equipped for Dad's care

Brookdale was clean and the staff was friendly, but they were far from equipped to deal with my father's care. The laundry was supposed to be done weekly, but I often had to remind management because my dad's laundry had not been picked up. I sometimes found his food on a tray in his room, hours after mealtime. He told me no one had come to feed him, yet he was incapable of using his arms and hands. Also, I was informed by our personal caregiver that she had twice arrived in the morning and found an employee sleeping in the chairs in my dad's room. By February of this year, I realized they were not giving him the care he needed - or that we were paying for - so I gave notice to Brookdale that he would be moved by the end of the month. The director asked me to please give them another month to try to correct the problems, and I agreed to do so. Things improved briefly, but went back to the same issues very quickly. I searched for a new place, and found a 'board and care' facility in a private home with only 8 residents and moved my father there. Everything went well thereafter, except for an on-going billing dispute with Brookdale. Overall, I would say Brookdale, Chatsworth is decent for able-bodied seniors, but definitely NOT for anyone bedridden.

The care is good

The facility is nice, although a little outdated. The coordinator was nice and knowledgeable however the move in was rough because she hadn't provided all of the requirements. Then we didn't get charged for months, again due to the same coordinator. Otherwise the staff was pleasant and kept mom safe from the time she moved in until her passing.

A nice experience getting better.

The issue I had with this place was they never truly did a “whats needed from you” type meeting. My mother was incontinent, and we have 3 different nurses all recommending three different diapers and pads. Then they recommended different sizes which resulted in my having boxes and boxed of incontinent items that could not be used. I know the facility recently renovated. When we first moved on several staff members had no idea what was occurring, and several nurses were asking me to complain to management for them. After a few months management changed things up and removed and replaced some people on staff which really helped. Things seemed to be running smoothly just before my mom passed away. What they seemed to really need was overall management and policy/procedures for the facilities. The cleanliness of the facility and my mom’s apartment was perfect. Really nothing I ever saw caused concern. Everyone was great, and my mom really enjoyed the staff as well. They were having some issues with their “calling” system so several times when my mom used her call button no one came. They recently revamped the facility and it felt like staff were still learning the system. I’d say the meals were average, but the dining areas were a 4 (above average). My mom required tray service, so she didn’t use the dining facilities much. I was always impressed by the number of activities they had each day. This place was not the cheapest I found and not he most expensive. It was clean and offered a lot of activities but the management behind the scenes need to improve a bit. The staff were friendly and accommodating but they seemed to not have policies or procedures to follow in certain situations which should be sorted out.

A nice community, but needs some improvements

Brookdale Chatsworth can work on improving their help and the meals and dining service. When our loved one needs assistance it can be a long wait until someone responds and comes to help. Also they run out of food items a lot, there isn't much of a variety and it is not always that nutritious. Also the wait time is long and sometimes by the time the residents get their food they are asked to get up and leave. We also with the physical therapy was done by an actual person watching over the residents and not by a video on the tv.
