Improve the small things

They do all the big things right, like medication, really well but a lot of the small things they do not. The workers are trying and really want to do everything but I feel like they might be understaffed. When I say small things I mean things like missing some laundry, certain parts of bathroom not clean, and other things like that. I feel like they say they check on them every two hours but if one is not with the main group then they do not check on them as much. Overall they are doing the best they can and the current staff is really trying hard, they could just use a little more help.

Review for Oaks at Beaufort

I can say I would not recommend the Oaks . My wife tells me they have run out of hot water several times . Seems new washing machine's are needed. They have broken done at least once, I had to take her clothes with me to wash them at the house one Sunday. On the weekends the staff seems minimal. The woman who does the billing won't show the billing. It was my idea to for [name removed] to live there. Her son pays the bill out her funds. I am the Husband, I have a right to know.

Oaks at Daniel Island review

Daniel island wasn't as bad, but drive time for family was a challenge. However, these roles (the general staff) are demanding. Not sure I could do it. I am no nurse. But the social interaction is really important. The physical and occupational therapy, access to physicians, etc... was a plus. Adhering to a schedule (meals, etc.) is important. Both locations provide those elements. But I challenge you to make everyone happy all the time.

Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing - DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!

The facility is dated and falling apart. Most of the staff are ok but some don't seem to care about the quality of care given to the residents. Some staff care about their job and genuinely care for the residents. Other staff members should not be in charge of feral cats, let alone seniors. The facility is very poorly run. Do not recommend to anyone.

Food/serving food in hallway/ food late

My younger sister and I searched and researched assisted living facilities in the Pooler area. I live in Pooler and needed [name removed] closer to me. I have been the director of two facilities in Savannah so I know how difficult staying on top of everything can be BUT!!! Now I am dealing with my sister, my sister..,not just a resident. Serving the food upstairs is nonsense! It’s more work for the staff and there’s not even enough room for all residents to sit at a table. Usually they have pizza.. not a good meal to go to bed on. On these cold days don’t you think it would be nice to have a fire going in the fireplace? Today’s lunch was not acceptable! Porkchop too tough to cut. They brought [name removed]a hotdog and the bun was cold and hard. Overall the staff seems okay! [name removed]is missing money…this, I will not put up with. It’s just a dead entrance when you walk through the front entrance! I moved [name removed] to the Oaks because I believed it was my best option! I don’t want to move her again!

I can't recommend this place anymore like I used to.

I was very disappointed with the new admin team. The resident died and when I went to chat with admin, I was told it was a new group. No empathy, care or any desire to talk with me. Very disappointed. If admin cannot provide the level of empathy and kindness the staff does, there's no team. Staff is outstanding. But poor leadership overshadows that level of service delivery. I can't recommend this place anymore like I used to.

I would recommend.

Staff are kind. There aren't enough staff to meet the needs of residents. Medicine, bedtime tuck in, morning wake up support, shower help all below expectations. Staff are covering too much area. Evenings very difficult to get help--no one really in charge. No nurse at the facility. (There was but not past two months.) But they are very kind and patient with mom.

Needs security updated

I was not happy my husband escaped and had to call police to find him. Security is not very good no cameras even as we were leaving even tho they keep the door locked to the memory care a lady came out with me and I realized she was a patient so I got a hold of a tech, I knew as soon as she ask me where her keys were that she should not be leaving. She did have her coat on and purse and I ask if she was visiting and she said yes. The tech are angels to do this kind of work in the memory care unit but the Oaks have such a turnover it is unreal. The carpets are dirty. The med tech and regular tech are very friendly and caring, but I was called to give meds if he gave them trouble. 5. Meals were not good and gave punch to drink everyday and did not give very big portions. Activities were great. Should have spent money on security and therapy instead of new pictures and new light fixtures, they did put in new kitchen cabinets in the memory care unit. It could stand to be furnished better.

Great communication

Always such a turnover in staff, price increase was terrible after 1st year, but overall it's been a good experience. Everyone is very kind to my dad, I do like that they just did a lot of painting, replacing carpet and furniture in common areas, I guess you can't help staff leaving, he also complained that the food is not good, however they do always keep me informed of things going on.

Making progress

My mother was in the memory care unit of the Oaks. The staff there try to interact with the boarders as best they can. We did have some problems when mom went into hospice care. Getting Oaks and hospice on the same page took longer than I thought it should have. While mom was living there a change of ownership occurred with greater than 50% staff change. For some time they were without a staff nurse. I believe they are up to full now

Potential to be a great facility

The Oaks is nicely and quietly situated well in Beaufort. The activity director is fabulous as well as a few select staff . They are friendly and treat the residents with respect. It’s kept clean and my mom’s room is nice. The maintenance guy is top notch. A few glitches from time to time when short staffed . Medication dispensing delays etc . However the food service is not as stated in brochures and internet. It takes away drastically because it’s important. They do not have chef prepared meals . More like Chefboyardee . Emphasis needs to be placed on wise non processed foods. Fresh healthy nutrition to this age group . Less microwave and meatloaf. More roast beef and potatoes. Also had ongoing issues with inaccurate accounting .

Poor people skills of staff

I visited my friend there and the staff was very cordial and very inviting. However, certain times of the day apparently is stressful for staff. They are rude and very short on the phone when initiating a talk with a resident. Z----- needs a coarse in people skills when you are responsible for the care of lived ones.

"On the right track but room for improvement"

The med tech and nurse techs are great! They keep me up-to-date and abreast of all of anything that impacts my Mother. They take special care with my Mom which I really appreciate. They treat her very well. I would like to see more organized activities to engage the residents, especially those who are in Assisted Living. We were told in the beginning that they have activities throughout the day, but I am not sure if that is still the case. The quality of food is fair, but the quantity leaves my Mom hungry.

Things to know.

Some staff don't have experience with residents that exhibit cognitive impairment behaviors. The respite/temporary apartment has an unpleasant odor. Don't expect healthy homemade meals. Had to remind staff to deliver meal to resident. Staff and residents are nice and friendly. One staff told a resident she couldn't eat at the men's table even though it is 1st come, 1st serve.

Review for Oaks at Shiloh Point

Visit facilities in the good better and best range. Don't eliminate a facility simply on cost and don't be afraid to ask hard questions. I would recommend the Oaks but again ask questions of any facility director of issues that are of concern to you and your family; I.e safety, medical accommodations; activities,

Oaks is merely MEDIOCRE.

Food is not nourishing and usually almost inedible - the taste and quality is so very bad. Thievery is so common and not even commented upon by management. My Mom has said to me so many times: ‘I feel so violated.’ (From the stealing of even the smallest of her belongings.)

Room for Improvement

Many times my mother would ring for someone to take her to the bathroom, especially at night, and she'd be ignored. I've had nasty aide on the phone and she refused to give me her name & when they took my mother to hospice, someone went into her room & stole all her perfume bottles! They were Christmas presents, expensive & full! No one has ever been held accountable. Many tomes had to call & get someone to clean her room. Most were nice but some were nasty. Directors & managers were always professional & helpful. Again, what I paid for lacked the attention not only needed overnight for my mother but other residents. When they could keep a cook, it was good. Most complaints were slow service. She always enjoyed the arts & crafts, bingo, outings, & happy hour & ice cream socials. Compared to the cost of other places around town, Oaks was good for the money. She couldn't afford a [fee removed] a month place, so for [fee removed] plus, it was worth the aggravation of a few bad employees. There were so special people who cared about their people but some were just unhappy people & management would try hard to weed those people out.
