Be Careful, Looks Pretty But Not a Safe Place

We moved my loved one out of here due to our loved one contracting COVID, and had other medical issues during their stay. The food was good and my loved one enjoyed the food here. Prior to the pandemic they had activities available for the residents several times a week. The other residents were friendly. I wasn't impressed with the medical staff at all.

This Place is going Downhill

An Update from my 1st review 2014. My mother and Aunt lived at Oakmont from 10/2012 to 6/2016 and I found the facitly to go "downhill" over that time period. While the facilities are still very nice and most of the employees are wonderful the overall mangagement has gone way down. It seems like they are replacing the best employees ([Removed] the manager and most recently [Removed] the activity director) with people who are not nearly as good. [Removed] knew every resident by name and was wonderful; I doubt the person who replaced her could name half the residents; she seems very cold. When I recently went back to visit someone who still lives there I was told [Removed] was fired. They have also changed Medical services there 3x in the past 3 years. Looks like they are now more concerned with money than the residents.

Concerned about threats by Management - Family/Friend

They will threaten to evict you if you start missing meals

My mother is currently a resident at Oakmont Northville Mi. Up until now she has been able to go down to the dining room and back on her own three times a day. Recently she has started to forget to go down for some meals and we have had to sign a separate contract that allows Oakmont to have an aid come to her room and escort her to and back at an additional $375 per month. We did not hesitate to sign the contract and start paying but the manner in which Oakmont approached us was horrendous. The management was rather rude and stated that my mother had started missing some meals and the staff had to go up and remind her several times. They stated she was becoming too much of a burden due to this and they threatened to call and ambulance and take her to a hospital and not let her return to Oakmont if she missed any more meals. We were totally appalled by their attitude. Up until this week my mother went down for every meal and was never a burden in any way to the Oakmont Staff. Due to this I would not recommend Oakmont to anyone searching for senior living. They are kind and cheery when you first meet with them but threaten to give you the boot if you start missing meals. We are not happy with this type of treatment

Mom wasn't feeling well, so I went alone. Atmosphere cheery, residents seemed engaged (observed mealtime and a resident sing-a-long/kitchen band). Apartments were spotless & well laid out. Only real negative was that each shower had double glass doors (to me that presented a potential hazard). Age of facility: 14 years. Average age of residents: 84/85. Oldest resident: 99. Due to accidents, there were also three residents in their 50's. Director was warm towards me and all the residents that we encountered during my tour.

Good enough in some ways, disappointing in others

This is a nice looking facility with well appointed studio, one and two bedroom apartments with walk-in shower, vanity, wardrobe, two windows and kitchenette with mini fridge. The daily care: medication passing; housekeeping, maintenance, activities, meals is good enough. Doctor care is not so good. If your family member can get an appointment with the doctor they might get help with what they need. The nursing director is defensive, snippy, and grouchy. There is no sense of urgency regarding medical matters. Residents need a family member to advocate for them to ensure medical follow up. My parent feels her medical issues are not taken seriously. The facility is very difficult if you do not use their doctor. They make no effort to assist with communicating with outside PCP, follow up on medication issues. This resulted in my parent being without a medication for a week. I have witnessed several family members at the nurses station inquire about prescriptions faxed by a PCP and they have been told "I haven't seen it come through." I have witnessed family members speaking to a staff who passes medication, advocating for their family member to be administered a PRN medication and been met with silence or a lack of urgency/concern. My parent complains about the texture of the food being unappetizing, that the same food is served repeatedly, and being bullied to eat. I have seen a resident crying out for assistance and witnessed a staff person silently walk away. Like any place, there are some staff whom are wonderful and others who are obvious about it just being a job. I have walked up on staff people making unkind remarks about residents. I witnessed a health care staff person come into my parent's room to bring her something, she was having a personal conversation on her cellphone and did not even speak to or acknowledge my parent. Most disappointed about the poor doctor care, it's availability, and the lack of urgency to meet residents perceived needs. The service is not as warm and friendly as it first appeared. Service is not as individualized as I had hoped it would be. Instead of feeling relieved that my mother's medical care is being taken care of, her medical care is a worry to me. I struggle with whether to continue with the mediocre medical care there or take my parent to a PCP, knowing it will be a barrier to her care at this facility since they will not coordinate with an outside PCP. There appears to be much staff turnover. There were two nurses who were 'in charge' when the nursing director was not on shift. Neither appear to work there anymore. Frequently see new nursing and medication passing staff. My parent will probably be moved elsewhere when her level of care needs increase as I lack the confidence she will get the medical care needed when she is no longer able to communicate her needs/concerns herself.

Be Cautious

My loved one was there for a short amount of time. Some of the staff weren't as pleasant to deal with, than others. The food was delivered to the resident's rooms due to the community being on lockdown. The value for the money wasn't good for us. The family was charged $1800 for a day-and-a-half and the community wouldn't refund us most of the money. I don't feel this was the best customer service for us.

Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Oakmont knows how to put on a show. While the ladies at the desk are genuinely kind and caring, the director is in a league of her own. [Name removed] is a two-faced bimbo that claims she gets all her rules from “corporate” And assures you that your loved one is being protected and well cared for. This isn’t the case at all. In this very stressful “unprecedented” time of this pandemic, the residents have been in their apartments without the ability to even go outside for over a month. The meals that are provided are extremely small and usually bland. Two pieces of pineapple and a few slices of banana hardly count as a fruit bowl for breakfast. And a half of hot dog bun with one piece of lunch meat turkey is not considered a turkey sandwich. Yes, the residents can make food in their apartments, but they cannot leave to get groceries, so their resources are limited. Cleaning services have ceased with the exception of weekly laundry and daily trash emptying to limit contact and promote social distancing. That was a good call. However, the staff that is bringing meals or emptying the daily trash enter the residents apartments frequently with little to no protective gear. A face shield without a mask is not effective. These residents are vulnerable in this pandemic and Oakmont is blatantly showing that they don’t care. When asked about what they are doing to protect their residents, [name removed] answers that she is “following corporates protocol.” Clearly corporate is in it for the money, not the concern of the older population and providing a safe living environment. Many residents, after being quarantined to their apartment for longer than 14 days have become sick with COVID19. Clearly it is being transmitted from the staff that is entering the apartments while not properly geared up. And I f asked too many questions about what they are doing to protect your loved one, [Name removed]'s response is always “you can chose to take your loved one out.” Why would anyone want to be ripped from their home during this pandemic? That is not in the best interest of the elderly. A population that thrives on consistency and familiarity deserves better care. Even before COVID-19, Oakmont promised a certain level of amenities and failed to live up to the standards they promised. If you are looking for a home for your loved one, talk with the residents to get their opinions, and most likely you will choose to look elsewhere for your loved one to call home.

Dining Room staff bullies residents, not clean

I moved here 7 months ago. It is very nice except for one glaring problem: Most of the dining room staff are screaming bullies who regularly yell at residents, send them out of the dining room with no food. The nasty looks and filthy items on the tables are the least of it. One by one they stopped wearing gloves, handle the food bare handed. Food is dropped on the floor and not discarded. The Executive Director has little to say about it and makes excuses. Those same servers hang around the building at all hours. Ex: the back of the building, the living room at night, etc. Residents have been locked out and had to call the police to get back into the building. Real cleaners are not used, only plant based. Public restroom has Softsoap, not sanitizer or commercial soap. In fact, sanitizer is forbidden to residents as it ruins the carpet. The facility is routinely inspected for bedbugs.

Management sucks

First off, the management "team" is horrible. They need to fire the whole bunch of them and start over with more energized, cheerful people. They don't have the decency to take a staff member to a private office but fire them right in front of residents and their guests. They force the CENAS to work 16hr shifts and if they can't, they're fired right on the spot. I would prefer someone who hasn't worked more then 10 hours to care for my relative, the CENAS are exhausted and mistakes happen when they are as exhausted as they are. I feel so bad for them, no wonder their is such a high turn over, they run these poor CENAS right into the ground.

Think twice about this place I know first hand

Please do not put your loved one in here. [removed] the GM she could care less about anyone there all she is trying to do is keep the place full so she has a job. And the food is horrobile. Not one trained chef works there. Please think think twice and look at other places. It will be worth it.

Just Beware!

Oakmont contracted out with Balance Healthcare. At first the contracted company was good. There were only a few CNAs that we enjoyed working with. The community never contacted us about a health issue until our family saw the injury and took our loved one to the hospital.
