Great Attitude

My aunt has been there for 6 weeks and we got off to a little bit of a rocky start. They've had almost a complete personnel turnover and so they are, in my opinion, having a little bit of trouble getting organized. The facility it's self is lovely and everybody seem to be very nice and caring. I would say, right now, they're in transition and so are we so I'm a little uncertain about how things are done. I think part of it is that I need to learn their system better and part of it may be that they're still trying to discern who is in charge and who does what. My aunt has a need for insulin injection everyday and it's very difficult to find a place that can do that - Sunrise can. Everyone seems very well intended, I'm just not certain they have their new staff up and running. They're always very willing to listen to you or come to your aid. I need to learn their system a little bit better and I think they are still learning also. The attitude of the people is very caring so I'm hoping we can get the other little things ironed out.

Palatable

It's clean and they make a huge effort to make it cheery with big greetings. It not luxurious or anything but overall they are head and shoulders above the place we chose, but we had to do that because of cost. He was here for a respite stay for about 5 weeks and he actually liked a lot of things about it but it was just more than we could afford for full time. It felt like he was noticed there. It was calm, more like an elderly holiday inn. It's different kind of depressing in some ways.

Antique looking furnisher

Sunrise of Bonita was close to where my mother used to live. It was within our budget and had immediate availability. It is not a cookie cutter senior community, does not have the typical hospital setting to it and is really more home like. Although the furnishings are not antique they spent the time to make them look that way, which really shows how much they really are trying.

Ivy Park at Seal Beach

My loved one was in memory care. The staff is doing the best they can, but they're underpaid and at times out numbered. Look up open positions, a staff member can earn just as much if not more at certain fast food restaurants. Disappointing for what families pay, because you get what's you pay for. The lack of communication after arrival is my biggest grievance. My loved one gained weight fast as she was eating 3 meals plus snacks and desserts, more than what she would typically eat at home. She needed larger clothes and the staff didn't tell anyone, same with her nails. No staff member ever mentioned her toe nails needed trimming and was impairing her ability to walk, which in turn can cause a fall, I know dental hygiene was ignored, so if you can't visit often keep this in mind. Additionally, on several occasions the toilet paper roll in her room was empty we started bringing our own, shouldn't be that way, but the alternative is worst. Lack of daily sunshine and outdoor time is an issue in overall wellness, but again it's not one-to-one care so staff doesn't have time. Overall this places markets themselves as premium because the facilities and grounds are newer - Even though we paid for the highest level of service there were still many shortcomings. At the end of the day, this place is nicer than most, doesn't smell of urine, and the staff is kind, but ultimately no one takes care of your family like family. You really do have to be present often to ensure quality care.

Our experience

Staff is VERY friendly and try to be accommodating however, I think they are very understaffed. Not a lot of follow up with administrative issues and when we had questions about the process to get our loved one into the facility- it was difficult to get a hold of anyone. We were dealing with multiple people and no one seemed to know what the others were doing. I should note it's only been a month since she moved in so we are giving them the benefit of the doubt to try to work out the kinks. We are hopeful that now that the move-in process is done it will go a little better

She lost weight. Fell down constantly. Sent to emergency almost daily. She became combative and was asked to leave . I think it had more to do with our mother than the place. She loved the staff and they loved her. She just needed a higher level of care than your facility provides . Do what you want with the information. Families need to know that some people need a higher level of care.

Our families experience

Overall, tough transition for mom, but settling in. Staff is friendly, lots of activities but mom isn't too interested. Food is great. Several administrative issues with billing, assisted care, and initial move in. Admin staff is not very responsive. That part has been disappointing. Apartment is great, plenty of room.

New Management struggling

The new management is struggling to address the issues that have persisted for many years such as poor food quality, consistent unit cleaning, cleanliness of the general areas including the laundry rooms and hallway carpeting. Activities are well planned and there is a very welcoming group of residents but Ivy leadership can do better by providing the level of service residents deserve and pay for.

Review for Ivy Park at Palo Alto

The food is good and the overall environment is warm, friendly and clean. The rooms are on the small side though bathrooms are spacious. There are a variety of activities including an excellent chair exercise class and a beautiful backyard. The response time is sometimes up to 20-30 min after a resident presses the call button. Communication between the nursing director, med techs and caregivers is sometimes lacking. It can be hard to get extra care in a timely fashion when special needs arise.

In Transition

They have been going through transition. New ownership I believe. It's taken them awhile to prepare her food correctly (chopped). It's better. Slow bringing food to the table. Also she is supposed to get two showers a week. There's been a lot of confusion about scheduling so she hasn't gotten her showers when she was supposed to. Hopefully the confusion has been rectified. My sister is paying for these two services as part of her care plan. I am hoping these concerns will be taken care of when the transition is complete.

Ivy Park at Woodland Hills

Ivy Park is a beautiful facility. When my relative entered the facility she went downhill very quickly and needed lots of care. Ivy Park appeared to be unable to take care of her as quickly as needed. We found it necessary to hire 24-hour private care to ensure she received the level of attention required. On a positive note, the staff was extremely friendly and did an excellent job monitoring the front entrance and maintained strong security by carefully tracking who entered and exited the building.

Unfortunate experience

They were understaffed the food was good. They were in the process of selling so just let things slide. He was adequately cared for but I didn't get what I was paying for as there was no director for 3 months and no nurse or activities person.

Good program director, thin amenities otherwise.

The choosing process was a "hard" sell, according to mom. I'm glad she decided to move. The intake and orientation process was almost non existent for independent living. The food is largely wheat based, and the menu is limited. The employees are friendly on the surface, but generally unavailable for help. They turn off the heat in the common areas around 7 pm, so mom doesn't want to stay down there and watch movies, which she would enjoy. It is hard to find parking to visit unless you want to call in to the front desk to park under ground, then call again to get into the elevator each time. They close down dinner often before posted times. There are really no library or magazines or newspapers to read. The books available seem more staged (for show) than a service for residents. The programs director, [name removed] is outstanding and much loved by all. The programs seem aimed at shut in folks in assisted living though. The apartment is a nice size, including an extra closet bar that is double stacked in the bedroom. The place is clean and passes the "smell" test. I've seen much worse, but mom is not very happy with her experience.

Review for Ivy Park at Fullerton

I found the Healthcare workers wonderful. I did suggest many times that they explain to my husband what they were going to do before they did anything because it frightened him and that's why at times he would lash out in fear. Some of this, I'm sure, was part of his dementia. I was disappointed when the food became significantly changed and not for the better. The food needs to be healthier, less cream, less fried, less fat, less preserved meats, etc. [Name Removed] as the director was absolutely wonderful. There needed to be a better organized exercise schedule, than watching a screen and sitting in chairs that are not conducive to proper exercise. [Name Removed] transferred from Silverado Brea so we could be together. It may help if someone who coordinates the exercise program could see the program there. It was a systematic and strenuous chair workout and fun. Finally, the billing system and dates is very confusing with unnecessary problems working through Genworth. [Name Removed] understood the problems and clarified them to the business office. I would have lost money unnecessarily if I didn't have a good business manager. I hope this helps.

Review for The Courtyards at Mountain View

The place is beautiful and we love that memory care has lots of windows and large hallways all on ground level. My husband's studio is comfortable and kept clean. I can take him over to assisted living for more activities and around the big courtyard also. The caregivers are friendly and work hard. He needs a lot of help because he is a fall risk. However the head nurse in memory care that I had interviewed with retired shortly after he moved in a couple weeks ago and has not yet been replaced. Another nurse from assisted living checks periodically but memory care sometimes seems understaffed. The food is pretty good and I ate with my husband several times, breakfast was served an hour late once. In general it's a friendly and pleasant place.

They are short on staff. This is not a place I would recommend at the moment.
