A Place for Mom has scored Oakmont Management Group with 8.5 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 937 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Oakmont Management Group has 3,558 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.3 out of 5.
Management of the memory care facility does not understand the symptoms or needs of anyone with dementia or Alzheimer's nor do they care to. This is a profit based business with shady business practices, severely understaffed, and incompetent to the point of highly dangerous for the residents in their care. Training and compassion are significantly lacking so please do not let the pretty, fancy façade fool you at this facility. They should have invested their money in the residents care rather than the furnishings in the lobby. We should all want better for our loved ones living with this diagnosis and I encourage you to demand it for them with higher expectations of their caretakers being paid to do so. I'm not sure how this management team can sleep at night knowing the disservice they are providing to our elderly and ill community. I hope change for the better and education of this disease is on the way very soon!

We moved Mom from a comfy but dull Board and Care to the Memory care floor of Sunrise because it offered so much more stimulation, great staff and many things to do. We soon found out that all that glitters is not gold. The problem, at least on the Memory Care floor is that the staff to guest ratio is FAR too small. 5-6 care staff for 35 people with memory issues? No matter how great the staff were, they could not properly watch over and take care of the people that needed it. People that couldn't feed themselves had their meals plopped down and then picked up without ever getting a chance to eat! The whole hustling mealtime reminded me of meal service in coach class. Mom was left wandering around alone the very first night she was there despite her being a high fall risk. Her clothes got lost in the laundry. The phone system is a joke - I don't think we ever got to talk to anyone without being disconnected at least once or twice, and no one knows anything, you just keep getting transferred around. The initial rate quoted to you is a come-on - you are then surcharged for every possible little thing and the monthly bill climbs quickly. I am surprised that you don't pay by the sheet of toilet paper. Perhaps things are different in Assisted Living - but in Memory Care the residents really don't get what they need, despite the hard work of the staff. There should be at least 2x the number of staff there, and one person in charge that you can always speak to. Mom was moved out after less than a month to another Board and Care that we found with more activities than the previous one, and 3-4 caregivers for 6 people. If you are considering moving a loved one to Sunrise, please don't be swayed by the beautiful building and the nice people. Go to the different floors and watch how the residents are actually being cared for, and spend some time there.

Don't be fooled by the good sales pitch and the new very fancy facility. The care our resident received was sub-standard. Every time I came in I found he was not wearing his glasses, hearing aides, and once found him at the dinning table waiting for meal with no dentures in. The lower functioning residents wander into others rooms and staffs solution was to lock the other residents rooms when they came out, instead of monitoring the folks who wander. There are no safety pull cords and the residents don't wear alert pendants so when asked how they monitor I was told there are motion sensors in the rooms. I can't see how that helps if your loved one falls and can't get up. Management is not responsive to issues and does not return calls , and I believe staff are not properly trained or supervised. We only lasted 3 weeks of this experience and we pulled our resident out. We could not believe this was the standard of care they thought was ok. It's not about the money we were willing to pay the price they charge, but we were not willing to accept the bad care. We have moved to a new facility and are very pleased with all the above issues being handled properly.

A visit to Atria Sutton can only be compared to visiting a very shady used car dealership. Offers are made to sign on "price only good for this second", just like the old jalopy with a 20 second warranty! There are better places with much better locations available than Atria Sutton. The management staff is very unprofessional. The dining room does NOT have table linens. Primitive child like entertainment for the old folks. Aesthetics to mimic a Hotel lobby...much talk about all the activities - yet all the activity rooms are empty. I would not recommend bothering with a viewing of this Senior Living facility.

I would not take a loved one here ever. They are understaffed, lie, and as far as I can tell have about 0 compassion for those in their care. They will suck you in with their schpiel and then take your loved ones hard earned savings, while not caring a lick for your loved one. Stay away - very far away from this awful place. I swear they sped up the death of my father.....

I am extremely unhappy with our experience. My loved one has been there and was never a fall risk. The community provided a monitor after my loved one falling. Since my loved one has had the call button monitor several times, and it has only been answered once. Overall my loved one's health has seemed to declined since being in the community. They have monitors in the resident's rooms. The staff are to be doing checks on my loved one in the evenings. The bathroom cabinet was to be locked at all times according to the staff during the tour, this turned out to false. The night shift doesn't seem to be attentive towards my loved one. If they had been checking on my loved one, they would have found my loved one sooner. I have asked the community for the care and medication logs, it turned out that my loved one was being double dosed on medication. This should have been concerning to the staff. The internal pharmacy has reordered medication three times and they don't have access to do this, as we were wanting to use our own pharmacy. When I visited my loved one recently my loved one's blood pressure was off the charts, and my loved one wasn't feeling well. We ended up moving my loved one to the hospital for care. I wish the caregivers would have noticed this prior to me having to say this to them. I also, wish the promises were fulfilled that were promised during the tour.

We had a horrible tour experience. Our tour appointment was set, and the night before, the administrator called to let us know that she couldn't make it, but another employee would be there to show us around and answer all of our questions. We showed up for our tour, and she had sent the maintenance man. He was very nice, but he couldn't answer any questions. Same with the girl at the front desk - she was very nice, but she could only answer a few of our questions. I was very disappointed in how unprofessionally the administrator handled the situation.

DO NOT BRING YOUR LOVED ONE HERE!!! Sunrise is a disgrace. My mother had been at the facility for way too long and the level of neglect is astronomical. Sunrise purposely understaffs at night when the residents need the most care and attention and after dinner they are left begging anyone passing by to please help them...go to the bathroom, find their room, tell them where to go etc. and there is NO ONE TO BE FOUND. The residents are left in a room with zero guidance and a staggering level of neglect. I find my mother unattended in her her room, alone in the dark every single evening I come. It is the most enraging and heartbreaking thing a child can see done to their parent. Sunrise charges 7K a month for this kind of neglect and they should be sued to hilt for their money first business model... putting the care and attention of these poor folks at the bottom of their list. There is a staff of 2 people per 20 residents at night and the turn over is almost daily. Sunrise is a disgrace and should be wiped from anyone's mind if your considering this hell hole for your loved one. DON'T. STEER CLEAR OF THIS PLACE. Consider a board and care where only 6 people live in an actual house with real, actual care and attention.

Don’t let the description of all the bells and whistles fool you. This is corporate run, nothing personal. 3 GM’s in 3 years. Never any follow up. The memory care was a huge disappointment. If you’re considering this as an option, go at least 10 times unannounced at different times. I felt the staff was young and the manager of memory has an attitude. We moved our mother into a smaller senior nursing home for less than half the cost and have better communication with a mature respectful staff. Please save your money!!

Beware! Bedsores and Ripoffs! This is a bad place. My mom moved there in July, walking with a walker and by the following March, she was completely immobile and had a BEDSORE! They had her on tons of dangerous meds, so that she was completely out of it mentally and could not hold even a simple conversation. Unacceptable for the most expensive assisted living in La Jolla!!! They do not keep the rooms clean. The staff is overworked and there are only 2 caregivers at night to take care of 2 floors of residents. The wait times - my mom would have to wait 30-50 minutes to get help for the restroom. On her very first night, they did not come for over 30 minutes after she pressed her call button (which constantly broke and had to be repaired and/or changed) - devasting for my mom, first time in a new place after 45 years in her old home - she had to call 9-1-1 because she was so scared. Later we found out, several residents call 9-1-1 or yell and yell at night because Sunrise is so understaffed and cannot take care of the residents in time. The administration lies and lies and plays dumb (or are super dumb?) - they just keep asking for more money every other month, even after they admit they are not doing their jobs! My mom was afraid of the administrators - they constantly lied and were rude to my mom and my family. At the beginning, they tell about all of the wonderful things they do - ALL LIES. They show you the bath with the music and candles but it is like pulling teeth to ever get one arranged!!! The only good thing about this place were the caregivers - they are dedicated and very caring - but they are so overworked and understaffed, they cannot possibly do their jobs adequately- unfair to them and to the residents. We moved my mom to a wonderful, new place - she is regaining her mobility, but may never walk again because of the damage Sunrise did. She is off all of the heavy meds and is happy conversing in all kinds of topics and has her complete memory back, thank God! Both her doctor and her P/T were shocked at what a different person she is now. Sunrise of La Jolla damaged my mom permanently and caused her and our family so much pain and distress and was completely unnecessary. We researched and thought we were making the best decision but made a terrible choice - since we left, we have met many people who had similar problems and issues with Sunrise. DO NOT PUT YOUR LOVED ONE IN THIS HORRIBLE PLACE!!!
