When I toured Brookdale Clairemont, The person that took us around was friendly and informative. The thing we did not like was that the facility was very dark, it was not inviting.

Not Fabulous

The bathroom is horrible, way too small, tub was ancient., and no fan in the bathroom. There was only one elevator. It's an old building and needs an update. The heater broke down twice, sounded like it was going to explode no compensation for the 5 days it went out. The parking was dangerous and it was not the best area. The price was quite high for all that you got. Cleaning once a week, sheet change and once it did not happen. I would not recommend them. They have let staff go left and right. Now the place is so short staffed and it looks like a real mess. The workers were kind, caring, efficient and sweet. There were far more negatives than positive.

Good value

Brookdale San Diego provides a good value for the services it provides. The caregivers are pleasant and helpful, but often seem rushed and occasionally, especially at night, response time to a call can take awhile. The range of activities is fair but the spaces where they are offered are a bit limited and could benefit from updated furniture. Dining choices and overall food offerings vary from adequate to very good. Overall, all staff are helpful and pleasant.

This is a nice community. The staff during our tour was nice. They only had studio apartments available for a higher cost than the community we chose. The community seemed clean. I wanted to also thank A Place for Mom for their help in our search.

wouldn't put my mom or dad in

I wouldn't put my mom or dad in Brookdale Clairemont. They say they will do certain things and they never get done. The care givers aren't very thorough or caring. The bathroom was disgusting when I came to visit the patient. The bed was dirty also. Any time she needed help and pushed her button necklace and it would take 20 minutes or half an hour for staff to respond. I would have to hunt someone down to get her help. For the price you pay and what you get is ridiculous. The staff is friendly I will say. They do have good activities there also, not that the patient participates in any of them. I really just would not recommend this place to anyone.

So far things are good.

So far things are good. It's clean and the staff are friendly. The elevators are old, and the power goes out once in a while, but that's just the building. They just got a new computer system, and that has been a little bit challenging, but it's nice to see an upgrade, and it's settling down now.

We enjoyed our visit to Emeritus and it we were pleasantly surprised. It felt smaller than Oakdale as far as the community, but the rooms were larger and overall the place was bright and easy to get around. There seemed to be a better mix of residents and I wonder if not having memory care on the facility had anything to do with that. Laundry was included in the price where at Oakdale it was not and Cable was not included in the price, where at Oakdale it was. So it about evens out. It is definitely a place I would go back to with mom for a lunch and tour

They do a pretty good job.

If she pushes the button for assistance it can take a little bit of time. A comment has been made that it was because they were short staffed. When I first toured, I got the impression that if they buzz to go to the bathroom, they would be right there, it's not exactly like that. The housekeeping is outstanding. They have a lot of activities, and they assign you an ambassador to take you around and get you involved. They do a good job with that. The biggest problem with the menu is that there is so much turkey and chicken. If you have it brought to your room, it might not be the right temperature.

The building was a little older, and not quite as nice as the one we chose. They were clean and friendly. The staff knew who everyone was, and the people knew the staff. This became our litmus test. Sort of the standard we were checking communities against. The food was pretty good, it was ok not five star gourmet, but good. Each room was empty, and they needed a lot of work to do things. You could upgrade the room yourself, paint them any color or upgrade them yourself.

Happy with our choice

My brother is getting out of his shell a little bit and actually participating in some of the activities they provide. For example they have parties, music, happy hours, walking etc. He is absolutely crazy about the food that they serve and thinks it is fabulous. The staff is very responsive, helpful and seem to be compassionate and really care about their residents. At the price point, I think it is a great value for the money. His room is very comfortable, bright and airy. It is about triple the size of the last place that he was at. I would recommend Brookdale Clairemont to others.

Do your research better.

It was convenient to my mom and sister. The staff immediately took brand new pants and snacks/drinks from dads fridge 2 hrs after he passed or a week prior to my sister visiting. Call the family immediately when staff says they pass. They waited 2 hrs for hospital/nurse to call us. Then wanted everything cleared up , available for next person within a week?

Overall GOOD people, which is hard to find in this world.

We would have been "lost" without this place, but an "overall" remodel is needed. the main negatives being the age of the facility and the unsafe load/unload areas in both the front and back of the facility. The facility's location is on a VERY BUSY street with VERY LITTLE PARKING! [name removed] (GREAT LADY!) and her Caregivers were overall a 4 rating because of their compassionate care. [name removed] at the front desk was also a 4 rating because of his ability to be very helpful and friendly. The food and food service was an overall 3 rating. The cleaning and laundry staff was an overall 5 rating, great people! [name removed], the facility's administrator was an overall 2 rating, nice lady but weak on follow through on requests. Families should be very aware that monthly rental rates can go UP with little or no notice from any facility that they chose. I still appreciate that I utilized A Place For Mom to find this facility.

Not recommended

My sister is currently a resident at Novellus Clairemont and overall the experience has been just okay. However, they are very short staffed for care givers and office staff. Also, the parking is terrible. I do not recommend this facility to others.

Our family had an in person tour with Brookdale Clairemont and we found the facility to be old and as well as the units we saw. Also the showers were not wheelchair accessible which is why we did not pick this community for our loved one.

Hoping it gets better

Our loved one is doing okay, she is still trying to get acclimated at the Brookdale Clairemont. She is shy and needs people to reach out and include her. They had an ambassador who helped show the new residents around for the first day, I think she needed more than one day. The food is not what we expected. We had dined there with her and the meals were not very appetizing. The food that was served was cold. It is discouraging for people who really count on the meals to be one of the highlights of their day. We are really happy with the care that they are providing for her. We like the fact that the doctor comes in to visit her, and that she is taking her medication on schedule. We really like her room. There are beautiful views of the nicely landscaped courtyard for the residents to get out and enjoy. They offer transportation for trips to go on outside excursions. We're hoping she will meet new friends and feel more welcome.

My mother was a resident here for three years and moved on to another community because her care need exceeded what Brookdale could accommodate. They went through two major director changes during my mother's residency. It was not the most stable place but it met our needs. The location and price was the driving force for her staying. They have some excellent staff and med techs. Some of the aides were lacking and you would need to explain simple requests to them. I think that all come downs to staffing. I know many of the administration has left since my mother moved. I think if there was more time spent on training it would be a better experience for residents and they would have less turn-over.
