Sad for my mom. - Family/Friend
Memory Care
August 1, 2019
When they tell you they staff the place they are lying.

They only staff the assisted living with 2 home health aides for evenings and nights. Hence residents fall all the time, because they get tired of waiting for staff to help them and try to get up on their own, and fall. They only schedule 2 staff for all of the assisted living, because management believes that's all they need. They don't have a nurse call when there is a fall, the home health aide calls, who can't answer questions. I know my mother sat on the floor for over an hour after a fall. They will then lie and say your family member was confused. They didn't even report one fall, I found out from an aide when I was there that they were covering. My main reason for placing my mom there was because [name removed] said it was staffed and we wouldn't have the same problems there as we did at Covenant. We found my mother in a cold puddle of urine in her wheelchair shortly after she moved in. Aides didn't even have time to change sheets. Clothes weren't washed. They had lots of activities to keep them busy. However when I would attend a music activity there would be no aides in attendance and I talked to them about the danger of someone falling. I told them people would stand up, or try to stand up and a staff needs to be in there. They didn't change a thing and someone fell in a music activity that day! Then they tried to get me to say they didn't hit their head, I told them I didn't see the fall and they should assume he did hit his head. Doubtful they did anything but bring him back to his room. Remember they will look you in the eye and lie. This includes [names removed] and worst of all [name removed].

Beware

At first we were very happy with the care For our mother, but due to many changes with administration and the care givers the care changed. We found out they we’re giving our mother a large amounts of anxiety medication 3x a day which made her sleep all the time so the residents needed less care. We didn’t not approve the medication it was prescribed by the house doctor. This was heartbreaking to us, we loved her very much. Our mother passed away a year, we didn’t know until she had to moved into hospice. BEWARE and be careful

My parents moved there from their home in 2015. Neither could die there together. Ok place to live if independent, expect at least one more move for each, and have to die alone.. Caring administrator and RN supervisor gone and replaced with individuals good at maximizing profit-- no caring. When dad died, clear that [name removed] (new admin) wanted 2 people to live in 2 BR apartment to maximize profit. Feel guilty every day for moving my parents and letting this place happen to them.

Looks good. Dangerous for some residents. A bitter experience.

Looks nice, food is very good, and most people are nice. My Mom had a nice time there, taking advantage of various activities for about two weeks. Unfortunately the CEO and/or the head of nursing did not especially care to make sure she got her Parkinson's meds in a very timely manner. Various times when I or relatives were there we had to go track down her drugs after waiting an hour or an hour and a half. My emails stressing timely administration seemed to make no difference, and she ended up declining in health quite rapidly and having multiple trips to the hospital in just two or three weeks. She went to a skilled nursing rehab facility and I relocated her to another assisted living place that seems to deliver on their promises. My opinion is that this is not at all a safe place for anyone who needs drugs delivered within an hour of their normal schedule. Shame!

NO COMMUNICATION, Difficult staff

Do not send your mom here if you want people who care. The worst directors who you have to chase if there is a problem. They are rude and evasive. I have had experience with many nursing facilities over the years. I have never seen a head staff more interested in getting new people than taking proper care of those already there. Communications with family are very poor and certainly not timely. Warning..there are much better places in Beachwood.

Not Good

I would not move a loved one into Brookdale Minnetonka. My wife was in [removed] so my knowledge of assisted living is limited to hearing over the radios that "this person's light has been on for a while". My wife had been there for a little over a year and the administration is very unresponsive from the start. I was told a couple things prior to moving in that turned out to be untrue. This filled a room for them and cost me more money which I am sure they were happy about. Do not get me wrong, there are some aides, maintenance staff and receptionists that are very good and committed to the work they do. Sadly, the lazy aides are running the few good aides out. Over the past 5 months, the care level has gone down hill very fast and there is NO supervision in the memory care unit. I have filled the administration in and what goes on back there with no response and no action taken. Aides will be in the kitchen talking and visiting or on their phones during meals instead of helping the residents. Aides would argue in the kitchen because a few of them did not want to do anything. Everyone at the tables could hear what was going on. Some days aides would ignore residents and I heard an aide mimicking and making fun of a couple residents. One aide told a resident that “you get what you get” when he asked what was for breakfast. I informed the administration and she asked for details. I have been giving details for 5 months and nothing changes and of course nothing changed after that conversation. I know employees have told management that things need to change and they don't even get a reply. I was paying a lot of money which included assistance with meals and that never happened. She would struggle feeding herself unless myself or my stepdaughter were there to help. It was such a bad experience I would not move anyone in there. I feel terrible for the few good employees there but when it comes to care level, supervision and administration responsiveness - it is the worst. Bear in mind when reviewing the ratings that almost all of the 5s were given by employees or administration. I am sure a few more self sufficient residents have had a good experience but if your loved one needs more care, I would advise you to

No peace of mind here

Absolutely zero support for independent living residents. Staff admits that if a resident was very ill or worse, they would never know. RN said she was not allowed to go into a I.L. Residents apartment. Food is very Carb heavy so if your loved one is diabetic they’re in trouble.

BEWARE !!

BEWARE !! My mother was one of the first residents in Memory care at this facility. While at Arboria she passed away, and was under the care of Hospice. The care from Hospice was excellent and Caring. The Hospice company was suggested by the doctor, and Not Arboria. The people who cared for my mother while at Arboria were in general OK. However, the head of nursing is Out of touch of reality and would tell me about situations that were abated 4-5 days prior. ( On More than one occasion) Her own staff would have to correct her to current conditions. Her attention seems more directed to Sales that being informative and active in patient care, and her style of management to me seems like a "Rudderless Ship". I have been trying to secure a prorata Refund check, for the time when my mother passed away to the end of the month, per this operations policy, and have still not received a check. I have been through the usual "The check is in the mail" to Now, having the refund check being returned as "UnPaid" by my bank. The negatives of our experience at this operation out weighs any of the possible small Positives. I have told this operation I will now file suit. The General manager has been of No helps and also seems pre-occupied with Sales as well. Sales that only comes from securing New Patients. New patients that may well have to go through this same kind of lack of communication and Failed Follow through, we have had to endure. They have all the excuses in the world. Just think for yourself, If this is how Arboria handles people, policies, follow through and communications, and they are not to full capacity, then how will they handle more patients and meet safe and caring guidelines. They will also be reported to the State of Illinois as well and the BBB.

DONT PUT YOUR LOVED ONE HERE!

Stay as far away from this place as you can. If you truly love your loved one, bypass this place. Always short staffed, medication errors poor rating with the state, formerly the Lighthouse of Columbia Heights. Had to change their name to get a clean slate with state of MN. Too many cases of neglect and death by neglect, registered with state of MN. Hard to find but they are all there. Management constantly changes, nurses leave all the time, can’t keep staff. No real supervision on the weekends and Holidays. Don’t throw your loved one or your money away. This place is despicable! First hand knowledge I had my loved one There and moved them immediately when I really realized what was going on behind the scenes. It’s all smoke and mirrors.

Terrible place to put a loved one , my mom was living at sunrise in Minnetonka and the staff was extremely overworked and understaffed , management never seemed to be around when I needed to talk to a nurse or a supervisor. Wait times are ridiculously high! The girls that work are great and can't blame them for the poor staffing, they did give great care to my mother that I am forever grateful for, but would not recommend this place if your looking for good management of the facility over all

I would give them 0 starts if I could

Since day one I have had issues with this facility. I work in this field and I know it takes time to get things in order. I was very willing to work with them to get everything organized and a month later, there are still issues. From the first day, my Mother’s meds were not given correctly and they gave wrong doses of her medications. One day when I went to visit my mom in the afternoon, the staff didn’t administer her insulin yet and I had to give it to her. When I spoke to the nurses about this they told me that corporate had to sign off on her medications. This is a very serious issue that could have killed her. A lot of the times no one answers the call lights either. My mom would have to wait for a few hours to answer it so she could go to the bathroom. Also, she was here for two weeks before they gave her a shower! The other thing that made me mad is I found out that there was one day where my Mother didn’t eat at all and she was left in her room because no one would answer the call light. There have also been a few times where she would have to stay in her room because they ran out of oxygen tanks and she couldn’t leave her room. I am appalled and baffled. The staff here has no compassion and they didn’t apologize when I brought this to their attention.

Not what I expected

I was not impressed with this community when I toured it. The community did not have a clean smell to it. I did not like the apartments as they looked shabby. The doors were all open when you walked down the hallway. This community felt more like a hospital and I did not think this environment would work for my loved one.

Horrible Experience

I had to worst 30 days of my life during my time in this community. I not recommend for anybody for go to this facility. I got bit by fleas, because of the dogs allowed on the property. I was only given one towel that was cut in half. They would cut the towels in half, so they could provide more. My dishes were left for over 24hrs, and my trash was left with dirty diapers. I enjoyed the aids, they did try their hardest. However the head nurse in charge was not accommodating. She would not listen to my concerns, and promised me a lot of things. That she never followed through with. My room was very small. I lived in six community's, and this is worst facility I ever lived in.

Terrible

If I could give it zero ratings, I would. Today we found out by not Keystone, but my grandmas hospice, who works for a different company, that she was flipped out of bed. We received no call or report on this. My grandma now has internal brain bleeding that is clotting near her neck. We also had another incident last year where she was rushed to the hospital due to "falling" out of her wheel chair. She is practically immobile and cannot move, let alone fall at a fast enough rate to break her nose. These are two of many investigations that are going on. The management is awful. Also, they have lost my grandmas dentures twice now, costing us over 4,000 to continuously get them replaced. It's a beautiful place but not worth what you're paying.

Leaves a lot to be desired!

This facility is a money hound. Every little service is charged an outrageous amount. One bath a week is charged $29 a day and entitles you to undress yourself, wait for them to come in and shower you and then you are required to redress yourself. If you can undress and dress yourself why would you need their help with a shower. Why would you leave a room of someone who needs help and make them wait for you to come back. Their head of nursing is the worst there is out there. She doesn't even care for seniors so why would you work there. Totally rude to the seniors and their families. Their evening and overnight staff leaves a lot to be desired. They don't follow though with reading a persons chart and if they forget to do something it is no big deal in their own eyes. The family is always wrong and they have no problem charging you even if it is their error. My recommendation is to look elsewhere if you care about the quality of care for the amount of money you are spending.

Not for your loved one

The caregivers are great even though there is a great turnover. The nursing staff leaves a bit to be desired since nobody has the same information at any one given time. They tend to drop the ball quite often. The physicians hired by Lighthouse need to be gone. They are inadequate, not properly trained and people go without medicine for months without anyone noticing, which includes the Lighthouse staff. Although the place is decent, it was much nicer about 4 years ago. It has dropped in its quality living since then and continues to do so. As for cleanliness, that can vary on a day to day basis. The main lobby and main rooms like that are fairly clean, but those hired to keep the residents rooms clean really need to understand their jobs. If you're planning on putting this Lighthouse on your list for your loved one, look elsewhere and really, really check each and every one place with a fine tooth comb so you don't find problems with the care of your loved one.

Their Assisted Living activities are wonderful, but their 'secured' area in Clare Bridge is ABYSMAL: The staff do not offer their residents ANY choice of food for their meals, they do NOT clean residents rooms very well, they have destroyed two of my husband's shirts in the laundry (valued at $180.00), the weekend Activities Director [removed] completely FORGOT about serving my husband his 'snack'... Also, recently when I asked staff for another meal for my husband as he does NOT like Mexican food, NO ONE brought him a different meal and my husband was forced to eat a cold enchilada as he was soo hungry! Worse still, the [removed] Nursing staff sent my husband home for the weekend once with only HALF of his medications; when I called his Primary Care Doctor, he said that they should bring me his medications immediately, which they did. :-( Finally, my husband's watch was [removed], but they claim he lost it! Easy to blame someone who cannot defend himself. There is one bright spot though: Her name is 'Drea' (sp??) and she is a SUPER person, but she has zero backup as, when she is off, the other staff spend more time playing "Family Feud" AMONG THEMSELVES than actually with the residents!!! :-( My advice, check out the living conditions at Clare Bridge BEFORE you place your loved one at Freedom Pointe as, sadly, one day they will end up at Clare Bridge and I wouldn't place my pet in their care, let alone a person you care about!!!!! :-(. Also, I recommend that you visit the facility on your own, without letting the staff know why you are there, so you can observe unpressured and unbiased by staff.
