Review of Avery Place in Winterville, GA

Winterville (Avery Place) has been a good setting for my husband who has dementia and some physical problems. The staff is caring, the facility is spacious and attractive. The outdoors is available to residents who enjoy sitting on the front porch or lawn. When there have been problems - 2 have brought them to the overseeing staff's attention and they have been corrected.

Nice place, overall

My loved one has been here for quite a few months now, and there have been some ups and downs, but overall I've been pleased with the experience overall. A big issues was that during an ownership change there were some issues involving pricing and care, but those were resolved, and things have shown a lot of improvement since then.

They took good care but was not stimulating enough.

They were very nice, but most of the residents didn't speak, it wasn't a good match. There was no real assessment. The activities weren't very stimulating for someone with more awareness. They didn't have working wi-fi, and there were a couple of days that no one would help with the T. V., they did take good care of the residents and they were friendly and clean and a nice community.

I really liked this place altho its kind of country and the activities/art seemed a bit juvenile. Warm, friendly, bright. A tree fell on one wing earlier this year and they had to do some remodeling. Wish they had gone ahead and remodeled the other side, too. No licensed memory care but they are set up to handle memory care in that the whole place is encircled with a fence which requires a code. They have a sidewalk all the way around, too for people who like to walk. All inclusive in price and its reasonable. Single rooms start at ~$3000.

Mom seems Happy

The caregivers here are nice and responsive to my mom's needs. The food is great here she has gained some weight even and that's a good thing. The community stays clean. They have activities she loves like playing bingo for snacks. The courtyard is nice and maintained. I would recommend this community to everyone.

Very nice, clean & friendly but possibly too helpful.

My husband has dementia and physical problems such as dystonia. I was going to have knee surgery and needed respite care for him. Avery Place was the cleanest, nicest, friendliest place that I found. While I feel that they took excellent care of him, they may have taken too good care. He returned home unable to do many of the things, such as fixing his own breakfast and lunch, dressing himself, toileting, showering, etc. He may have just been confused or he may have had a downward turn in his dementia, but it has made life very difficult for his family. Also, we were not told in advance about his medications having to be put into "push packets" and the additional charge for that. Since then, we have had to return to Avery Place to pick up his razor & another trip to pick up the RX's that remained in the bottles we took out there. Also, they requested a copy of my power of attorney and health care POA, but said that they could not return it as they needed it for their files. I have since requested twice that they make a copy and return the original to me & will hopefully get that soon. Again, the staff is very friendly and nice and the facility has obviously recently been redone. They even gave him a good-bye present of a book.

Lanier Place review

Mom repeatedly complained about just one thing while she was there, and it was that she felt that someone was always pushing their religion on her. I don't have specifics except that when she went to do something (can't remember which activity), "you had to sing hymns or do a sermon before they would start." I personally didn't feel that the facility was very secure. It seemed that there was never anyone at the front desk and someone could just walk in and go wherever they wanted to, unchecked. The staff was very personable and friendly. They made it an easy process to get her in and out again as we needed.

Stay Engaged

The food is okay. We picked this community because, they sold really well but they have not delivered. They did a good job of telling me everything, but have not followed through with those things. They need to improve on individual care, and ratio of residents to staff. They could also improve on communication, and cleaning . Also, they have had a turnover in staff.

Some improvements with Lanier Place could be better activities external to the facility. Also the cleaning seems to be suffering lately .

I toured this community and it was nice. The staff was very nice and personable. It's a smaller community compared to others that I toured. It wasn't the best fit for our loved one, but was still nice.

Would be a good place for somebody prepared for the transition

Going through this with my loved one with dementia and getting her placed was absolutely the most traumatic experience I've gone through. Ashley, the admissions person who helped me get her placed at Lanier Place was great, and I felt like she was there for me. But once my loved one moved in, she was gone. I tried to contact her and got no response whatsoever. They have a high turnover of people. So every single one of the people who attracted me to this particular place are no longer there. I did not like the person who was in charge, but he's gone. I have not met the new person. I don't know if anybody who works there has ever been through this with their family, but I don't feel like they were very compassionate with how overwhelming it is having a loved one with dementia, and how difficult the process is to get someone placed and cared for with very little financial resources. It's just completely overwhelming. The things that are important to us as family members to know, I don't hear from them about. But when it came time for their year-end survey, I can't tell you how many calls I got from them asking me to fill out their form. They basically harassed me to answer the survey. I will say the nurses who work there are really nice and really great. They're very attentive and helpful. But the administration is not.

Keep An Eye On Loved One and Your Account

Keep a close eye on your loved one. The bathroom is never cleaned, her room. She was not given a shower for over a month. They put the residents in front of the tv. I don't see any activities happening for these residents. They say they do but I have yet to see them during all my regular visits. The follow through on what they say they will do is the issue. I do not know if the doctor has seen her yet. She needs to be seen by the doctor and I have yet to find out if anyone has seen my loved one. I have been billed for medications that my loved one is not being given. This has not been worked out.

My tour review

This community seemed really friendly but it was more expensive and they added on for any service that was needed. It just would have been to high for the budget that we were looking for. The tour guide did not know much about the prices and a lot of information which did not sit right with us.

Not what we were expecting

Sometimes the food that they serve is really good, and sometimes it is served cold. The facility itself looks a little run down, and they did allow us to go into the community to move our loved one in, and we were a little disappointed with his room.
