It could be better although it could be worse.

My Dad is a new resident at Dancing River and when he moved in I was wondering why the community didn't have some type of buddy system for the new residents until they are familiarized. i really think that would help. The home health agency the community uses is completely wonderful and they communicate with me unlike the staff at Dancing River itself. Overall, we are still trying to adjust but hoping that with time things get easier.

Isaac and Ren did a wonderful job of providing information and taking us on a tour of Fairwinds. They were very friendly professional and upbeat about the many amenities offered. There were several types of units shown- a shared common arrangement with two bedrooms a private unit with one bedroom and a private unit with two bedrooms. Small kitchen areas were included with a microwave and refrigerator. Walk-in closet space was quite large. Bathrooms were large with high profile toilets grab bars throughout and large roll-in showers that could also accommodate a shower chair. Every unit is freshly carpeted and painted before a new resident moves in. Public spaces were large and well furnished. Chairs in the common movie viewing area were comfortably firm and supportive. Residents were very involved with each other and most we saw were standing and walking about with walkers. They did not acknowledge us as visitors nor attempt to engage in conversation. That seemed to be a bit cliquish. I d be concerned about residents making any effort to welcome newcomers. There is an on-site beauty salon with services for nails hair and massage. It seems like a really great place for the right personality but it does not feel like a good fit for Mom. The first thing I noticed was the sound- loud and echoing throughout the cavernous building. It is much like a very large hotel in a noisy urban area. Although the camaraderie amongst the residents was a positive thing it was shared that sometimes they get into friendly shouting matches. Differences of opinion can flair up into altercations which soon smooth over. That is not an environment which would be conducive to my mother s emotional health. Serenity is something she needs and that was not an evident tone at Fairwinds. While I understand the practical aspect of asking about the financial resources of a potential resident I felt this was one of the first issues addressed- before any substantive discussion of the physical social emotional and spiritual needs of my mother. There were moments when the staff person was looking at the computer screen rather than at me. Just a fine point which is a particular pet peeve of mine. Another concern is the open stairways reaching up three floors. While they were elegant and attractive I imagine they would trigger anxiety in my mother as she attempted to walk inside the building. The building is enormous and the number of residents is high. I honestly believe that may be one reason why residents engage in heated verbal exchanges. Living amongst so many people does elicit these kind of survival instincts particularly with males. I was concerned about my mother getting lost in the building. There are many hallways. Although each resident is encouraged to decorate their door in a unique way to help with that aspect I even found myself turned around. A big plus was the key system employed for residents. They wave a device in front of a two-inch-square pad above the door handle. In addition to being easy to use for people with visual challenges entrance and exit data is used to document their whereabouts as well as times when services such as medication are administered. There was a pool area- not a big plus for my mother. There were many activities offered but the group games in the front room as we entered seemed to be a little wild for Mom s demeanor. Outside walkways were on the narrow side and there were dips and rises which would be difficult for my mother to navigate. Although well maintained the outdoor garden areas were fairly standard and without much personal appeal. Distance from our Tower District home is also a factor it would take a half hour to travel across town to visit or pick her up for adventures. That is a lot of time that could better be spent interacting with her rather than driving on the freeway. I imagine the location is far more convenient for families who live in north-end Fresno. The bottom line is this Fairwinds is a hotel-style environment and we are looking for a more home-like situation

you really should take care of the easy things before they fester

So far mom has enjoyed her stay. however if you are thinking about having a loved one stay here or any facility for that matter, get the advanced info on who you need to talk to about taking care of all issues and in this instance: regular maintenance. Gosh with all the major important issues, I would not have thought this would be on the top of our first experience list. Have been dancing around this since she moved in. Lots of empathy but no resolution. Great entertainment for the residents and excellent dinning. If I would not have to continue to follow up on basic maintenance that would be mighty fine

I toured this community while looking into care options for a loved one. Compared to some other communities I saw (including another Grand Villa location) I was not too impressed with Grand Villa of Pinellas Park. The staff here were friendly and the residents seemed well cared for, but the facility itself felt like an old fashioned nursing home. It just wasn't somewhere I thought my loved one would be comfortable.

This community is independent living only. They do not offer assisted living. My Mom is there and is not very impressed with the food. The breakfast is continental style and the same every day. It includes cereal, hard boiled eggs and pastry, none of which is homemade. The dinner offers very small portions and lunch is sandwiches only. The community is across the street from grocery, shopping and a senior center, which is convenient. The staff includes administrators, cleaning staff for resident units. There is no activities director.

My Experience

Overall impression was okay, however; after moving in, I did not realize I had to supply my own refrigerator. Secondly, I also found the walls are thin; as I received a complaint for using my washer from 8:00pm to about 10:00p.m. one evening. The good part is there is not a deposit, but there is a non-refundable $600.00 fee. Also, you can have pets without having to pay a fee. Awesome! One place I looked wanted to charge $50.00 per month for a pet! Bathroom toilet had and order I suppose from the blind man who previously lived in cottage prior to me moving in. Took me awhile to eliminate the smell.

Much nicer than East as renovations already happened. However no Assisted available but I was told Independent can add services for a fee to acoomodate an individuals needs. Reviews tend to lean toward a lot of promises that don't get met. They do offer all the services. Needless to say, that concerns me. I want to know my father will have his needs met. Assisted residents must line up for meds in an area there are seats to wait your turn if needed. They are assuming these individuals will remember? They are there because they need help to remember. What if they don't remember to go to station for meds? Is that managing their meds?

The activities are great

The food is not up to par. The waiting is the restaurant is very poor. The activities are great, but there is no one there in the evenings – dinner is at 5:30 and people go to their rooms to hibernate. There are outside areas. I do my own laundry – the first week I was here they lost my sheets. Overall it’s a community that is convenient to a lot of shopping centers and doctors, but the staff is not aware of the doctors.

I think because they are new they didn't have things coordinated and all put together yet.

They really weren't able to really handle him, they did come out and evaluate him but after three days they called an ambulance three times for falling out of bed or something. I think because they are new they didn't have things coordinated and all put together yet. After they are up and running a while I think they will be a lot better because, they were changing things on the fly and there were a lot of miscommunications. Depending where your person is mentally and physically you really have to give that a little consideration. They really weren't up to taking care of him, they really do have a lot of activities, some of them are good some of them are not so good, but they do keep them busy but if you need assistance, that can be kind of tough. The food was ok, it wasn't bad. We had a problem with being told that any medications I already had, which I had quite a few, they would use those first. I took them in and talked to the nurse on staff at that time and they agreed to that. However the very first day they ordered all his medications. I wasn't aware of that, but noticed they didn't use them and charged me. Of course the insurance wouldn't pay for them because I had just gotten them. Their communication links one to the other needs a lot of work, and I attribute that to the fact that they were new. They did have a drowning three weeks ago, they are surrounded by little lakes, the person must have gotten out the front door, and I don't know how the person got out it's a lockdown unit. The main reason I picked it was the location and the outside, to sit outside was delightful, they have a lot of water surrounding it which I thought was nice, it was newly painted, newly carpeted, newly furnished. They had some little birds in there which I thought was so cute. Little live birds, I liked it and it was pretty. There was no traffic noise.

Not Wheelchair Accessible

My mom is in a wheelchair and an assisted living facility should be wheelchair friendly, because the person that is being assisted could be wheelchair. We were originally signed for a one bedroom apartment, but when we saw that she could not maneuver, we downsized to a studio with more access. It is a very uncomfortable bathroom for her. This place was originally an independent living senior community that was purchased by Grand Villa. If you are a wheelchair bound person, forget it. Their housekeeping is not great, and I am being kind. They are putting people in slots because they don't have the proper person right now. A young woman is the activities director, and that's not what she usually does. The head of housekeeping is a very nice man, but that is not what he does, either. They don't have enough aides because whenever I tell my mom to request something from them, she says that they are out the door so fast she doesn't have time. The food, sometimes it is OK, but if you come in a little late, the food is lukewarm or have to wait a half hour. This is not a constant. There are times when things are functioning well. They have nice entertainment. Bingo three nights a week and she enjoys that. They do try to help when I call, I will get through to the director but sometimes I feel like she says what I want to hear and is too busy to address the issue. They are taking in more than they can handle, but they do try and get their act together. I really don't want to move my mom, so I hope that things will work out.

They were OK, it was more of a location factor for me. I didn't find anything that was all that outstanding about it, but nothing horrible either. The only thing that I didn't like was that the lady that was giving us our tour was the head housekeeper - the marketing director should made time for that.
