Had some issues with the staff about my mom's meds. The food was good and it's a nice place!

Admin staff is missing (to be hired), out on leave, new, or covering from other properties leading to confusion or referrals to other team members. Very few longer tenured admin folks. Perhaps there is high turnover in this industry due to stress? Perhaps the Executive Directors need more administrative support? All staff and employees are polite and friendly but not as efficient and timely as I would expect for an upscale Residence in this location and at this price point.

The facility itself is very well maintained inside and out. Lots of beautiful outdoor space with seating areas to enjoy the nice weather. Staff is really nice, very friendly. They made an effort to get to know my father right away. At times, they need to be quicker to respond to emails.

Welcoming building layout, love the lobby as you enter the building which is a common meeting place for socializing and events. Very clean and grounds are well kept. Lots of activities. Price fit our budget. Centrally located right off highway.

With the change in administration, the facility lost many of their seasoned employees. Services started to go down, and incidents of both Covid and bedbugs picked up. The administration was unwilling to address many of the issues that my cousins asked them to address about my mother's situation, and therefore we choose to move her to a different facility. The new administration seemed more focused on profit than the health and welfare of its residents.

Beginning process was ready to be easy I feel like the issue of staffing and scheduling for home health aides was not great. The first month to six weeks was really quite hit or miss with the service we were not getting responses back from the director or the nursing staff which made it difficult to help my parents transition. The dining room has been really great they're not completely fully staffed but the people who work there are wonderful and my parents have been happy with the food. One thing that kind of is an issue with their programs are offered and sometimes they're canceled more often.

Father was on the memory care floor, and I can only speak to that. Staff turnover was rampant and grouping all of the individuals on the memory care floor together for all meals and activities only worsened the dementia. It's not that I wouldn't recommend memory care. I just felt it was too broad of a spectrum for 25 or 30 individuals… Some with severe dementia some with minor dementia

The staff is mostly friendly, and tries to do their best, but there doesn't seem to be enough for the residents. Often there are long wait times when you request aid. The facility is mostly kept clean and orderly, and usually decorated nicely for holidays and events. The grounds are lovely, very nice to take loved one outside in good weather. Recently paved roads and parking lots and new windows are going in the apartments. Recently we've had issues with the A/C not working, laundry machines not working, hot water not working, the elevator not working, and at this moment plumbing is not working. For the price they expect people to pay, these kinds of issues are really just unacceptable. It's not enough for the building to look nice, everything needs to work! For families whose loved ones are mostly independent these issues might not affect them as much, but the more help you need the more difficulty you would have here.

They told us these're fully prepared to accomadate my mother's gluten free diet- not true at all. Chef reportedly was never notified and they still don't have it right and are not helpful with it. Director and nursing director have not responded to to texts or emails- disappointing.

We needed more orientation as to how things actually worked, especially after my mother in law got sick with the flu and was showing some confusion. Care was not provided by the residence staff, but had to be coordinated with a local VNA. We had no idea. Then we needed help getting her to take her meds, but didnt realize we had to set all up. One med had to be crushed which the staff weren't allowed to do and my mother in law didnt have the hand strength, so we had to take care of that as well. My mother in law has time blindness and has had this all her life. She's always had her own system of reminders, but this is no looking working. We need someone to alert her and make sure she gets to meals and at least one activity per day, but this keeps falling through the cracks. Missing meals is not ok. Having to call the front desk to remind them to go get her is another thing we shouldn't have to worry about. But they have been very responsive when she presses her emergency button, the staff are always pleasant, the facility is spotless, rave reviews on the food, and they have been responsive to our concerns, but a more thorough orientation for the family would have saved a lot of angst. And the place for mom staff were amazingly helpful in finding a suitable place that met all of our criteria - nearby, could be short term, allowed mother in law to take her dog with her, affordable and with an open bed. I would highly recommend a place for mom.

My mother moved from Florida to The Residence in [date removed]. She unfortunately had a small surgery done in September that caused cascading medical issues that led to multiple hospitalizations and eventually necessitated Hospice Care in late November. She died in early January. My initial impressions of the Residence were positive. Very new, clean, friendly residents and staff. Good food. As my mother’s care needs grew, my interactions with the nursing staff increased. I experienced incredible amounts of frustration trying to get the nurses to do what the doctors had ordered. I had multiple meetings with the director of the facility and the head of nursing to discuss issues/lies/mistakes. I was promised the facility could handle Hospice care but still my mother’s last weeks were frustrating and difficult. I will end by saying the lowest paid staff at the Residence were wonderful. They were incredibly loving and caring. I thank them for their care.

The rate is excessive and they have raised the rent $[removed] a month since she moved in, even though she needs less assistance now. Several residents have had to move out due to similar rent increases

I just wanted to point out that Residence at Great Woods claims they can provide care for people with dementia but that is not true. My cousin lived there for a very short time before they sent her to crisis and would not allow her back unless we paid privately for someone to sit with her for 24 hours a day. They knew her history of dementia and mental health and still claimed they could care for her but instead put our family in a very difficult situation. It was not a good experience.

Likes - Most of the staff are very kind. Facility is clean Improvements - Communication is severely lacking. I never see administration. Meals don't always have options and run out of things. Bottled water isn't available. They changed their billing and now nickel and dime us for everything

The facility is really nice inside- open and airy. My loved one had an "alcove" size room, which is between a studio and one bedroom apartment size, and it's very nice. The faculty has a nice patio and a little walking track around the facility. The problem is that there's been constant turnover in staff, which appears to be related to the main administrator. This has led to sub-par communication, especially regarding care. As the closest relative, I really have to stay on top of what's going on there- for my loved ones sake. Food is average to below average. They do have activities, but they are repeated every week with no changes for variety. The activities have declined and become below average since the departure of the last activities coordinator. We were told they have lots of trips to different places, but as far as I know, the only trips they have is to home goods or Walgreens. We do not want to move my loved one because she has made friends and it would be upsetting and disruptive to her. I feel like we were sold a false bill of goods. That being said ,the workers there are pleasant .

[name removed] has not lived at The Residence at South Windsor Farms for more than a year. The food service was the best thing. As a comparison, my mother transferred to the [community name removed] and all they never offered were the specials. They pretended they didn't have a regular menu. The food was the worst thing there. Unfortunately she now in a long term care facility.

I think that Mercer Hill (at the time we were there) would be amazing as an independent living facility, but they were not staffed properly for assisted living. The staff that were there for assisted living did not seem familiar with caring for elderly patients with cognitive disorders or even elderly patients that needed additional help with anything aside from passing out medications. My impression is that they were understaffed, there was a lot of turnover in administrators while I was there as well, so consistent communication was difficult and rare. The head of nursing at the time was non-communicative and seemed to have very little clinical experience with elderly patients either. It is a beautiful facility though.

The community is great. Most of the staff turned over since my Dad moved in. Most of the new staff is very caring and attentive. Things are still changing and I feel definitely for the better. I would recommend this community to others.

My loved one was previously a resident at Suffield by the River and her experience at this facility was okay overall. The cleanliness and friendliness were good. The staff and care services were okay. Ultimately, my loved one's care needs changed and we had to move her to a different place. I would recommend Suffield by the River to others.

It's a very nice facility. If you are independent living, they don't really have the staff to do anything that's assisted or beyond that.It's fairly expensive and the amenities aren't necessarily up to the price point.
