Beware

The company is focused like a laser on their profit margin. They lease apartments in "Independent Living" communities to seniors more in need of "Assisted Living" with the promise that they can hire their own healthcare nurses, (at their own expense), if needed. Holiday Retirement is able to do this because they do not provide any healthcare staff in there Independent Living communities. When you then focus in the cost of rent plus nursing, this puts the senior at more cost per month then moving into an Assisted Living community in the first place. As for the individual communities General Manager's, they are forced to cut cost on meals, services and labor to increase profit in exchange for up to a $30,000 yearly bonus. The residents are living on hot dogs and pasta because of cost cutting measures and Assistant General Managers are being fired and not replaced to keep labor down and increase profits.

Disappointed!

My aunt is dying and the Parent Company (Atriia) is still charging her for Two months rent. We gave notice on Feb. 4th, but because we didn’t carefully read the contract and we’re not expecting my aunt’s rapid decline March’a rent is demanded. Very Callous attitude for a company working with seniors.

Poor Quality

This independent living facility has gone downhill since my relative moved in a few years ago. There has been no live in manager for the past 2 years, nor a night manager past 7 pm to help in any emergencies that might arise in the evenings. They cannot keep a good chef, the meals are almost inedible, portion control is all over the place, and they even run out of food at times. This food situation has been going on at least for 9 months and is horrible for the residents who rely on the food offered by the facility, which is paid for in their rent. Many times residents walk away from a meal hungry as the food was such poor quality that they could not eat it. One resident who complained to management was told that if complaints did not stop they would be evicted. On another note, they are now allowing couples to rent apartments even when one partner has dementia, and the facility is filled with people needing caregivers. I can understand seniors needing some help, but this is almost an assisted living facility but with no licensing or regulation. Rents go up every year for those who could not afford a buy in when they first moved in, but services have definitely gone down.

Thoughts

My mother-in-law is a resident at Pinegate, Macon. We could not be more disappointed in this facility. The food is her main issue. The majority of the time it is far below standard. The serving as in a restaurant style is ridiculous. A buffet line would be much more efficient and would not take the residents several hours to be served and then, they may not get what they 'ordered'. To run out of food is not acceptable for the rates changed at this facility. The quality of food is, for the most part, not eatable. The manager, [Name removed], does not seem to be concerned. The front desk person as been helpful and finally they have assigned someone to clean her apartment whom she trusts and seems to like. In the past, she has had sheets put on her bed damp and had no choice but the sleep on them a night. After that, she began washing and drying her own linens. As I said, we are greatly disappointed in this environment and have her on other lists to move as soon as possible.

Terrible Food

My Grandma is in this facility and while the facility itself is well maintained the food is atrocious. Pizza and boiled hotdogs are regular menu items for the residence. I joined my Grandma for dinner and the sandwich they served was some sort of canned chicken that was so full of garlic you could barely eat it. It’s really unfortunate that they don’t provide better meals because the facility and staff are very decent.

Buyer beware

So far we're only trying to get a lease! It has been a horrible experience. The sales lady stood us up for our appointment and has been completely out of contact the entire day! Voicebox full, no emails or texts returned. After a 3 hour drive for this pre arranged meeting! I had to contact the manager, but at this point I'm reserving additional judgement. We have been given 4 different rates for the same apartment. This should be a transfer from one Holiday Retirement to another. They tell you when you sign and move into one that they can transfer very easily....don't believe anything Maple Downs tells you! Get everything in writing and don't waste your time dealing with their sales dept. their sister complexes don't even have sales people!! They are also charging $1100 for one day of the month in addition to a full months rent!!!!! For a person who has been a Holiday Retirement resident for almost 2 years in another state! Beware of anything they tell you!

Not what it used to be.

My in laws have lived at Alexis Gardens for over a year. It was a difficult decision for them to leave their home of 40 years to come to Toledo, but AG seemed like a very nice place...and initially, it was. But things have definitely taken a downward turn over the past several months. Below is a summary of some of the issues: -The quality of food has greatly diminished, after a petition circulated, the corporate chef came in to hear the complaints first hand, so time will tell whether there will be improvements. -The housekeeping is lacking - 20 minutes to change linens, dust, vacuum and clean a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment is not adequate, no matter how efficient the staff (and it definitely reflects "light housekeeping"). The general areas are kept clean and tidy, including the dining room, halls and laundry rooms. -My in laws did receive a rather large rent increase at their one year anniversary (they are very private with their finances, so I can't say exactly what they are paying), but when they complained to the local manager, the increase was reduced some. -A large, beautiful spruce tree was taken down by the weather last winter, and was never replaced, leaving a gap in the landscape as well as a much less appealing view. -Finally, the only elevator has been out for several days now. The management reports "a nationwide search" for the necessary part, meanwhile, residents that are not able to negotiate stairs are confined to their own floor. Meals are being brought up to individual apartments, but socialization plays such an important role for the elderly. I will be happy to update this review, as circumstances improve, but as it stands right now, I cannot recommend this residence.

Food is awful!

The web site says, "chef prepared meals.." I think the chef went on vacation and never returned. The evening meal a few weeks ago was grilled cheese and tomato basil soup. The soup was good but the grilled cheese was on cheap white bread with processed (fake) cheese. The meal included fresh fruit...10 very small pieces of watermelon. This is just one example. Tonight was sirloin burger, it was full of gristle and a horrible sauce. The omelets and scrambled eggs are not made from fresh eggs. Food is awful! I have noticed the managers bring in most of their own groceries and they are equipped in their units with full sized kitchens, which we do not have. 24/7 managers seems to mean they live there but are not always available, they are virtually invisible before 8 pm at night. Thank goodness a resident was up and able to let my elderly mom in at 745 pm, the other noc when she forgot her key. And the pricing for what you get is too much. Listening to residents some get a good deal and some do not. Transportation is also very limited and not wheel chair accessible. Just beware!

Not very impressive!!

The facilities looked very nice, but there wasn't much going on for activities. The seating for meals proved to be not very welcoming for new people . Residents never knew where to sit as other people had their favorite groups already in place. The parking for residents was not as promised. Upon leaving for a new residence, the deposit has not been forthcoming after 3 month. Overall, not very impressive.

Willows sales experience

My mother and father in laws are residents. First off the Willows is a nice and clean place. Rooms and food are very good. Now the problem. In the beginning I was looking for places. Elected by my wife and her sisters. I went on a tour with Larry and was quoted what the price would be for my inlaws. The family spent a few months trying to convince the the parents to make the move to a retirement home. During that time Larry called me several times with different offers. Some of the offers would have saved thousands of dollars. Larry has told others that I called him. Only time I called him was for that first tour. Anyway the decision was made and the daughters contacted Willows and signed a contract. I was not there when the transaction occurred but now the prices suddenly jumped up and no discounts. Now the prices equaled to just over their income. I agree that a contract is a contract but what I saw was some advantage taking place and Willows taking that advantage. One of the managers yelled at one of the daughters for not using their recommended vendor (another huge charge) for a Veteran's benefit. (Maybe they get a kickback not sure) I have asked for a review of the costs but that was weeks ago and they have never gotten back with me [contact information removed]

All that glitters is not gold

After my husband's stroke, we moved to White Oaks for 20 months as we needed a handicapped bathroom. Weekly housekeeping "services" were 19 minutes each week, which was to cover changing all linen, sanitizing the bathroom and vacumning carpets. Windows/curtains were never washed, carpets never cleaned. All resident linen was washed in a home type washer in COLD water, with linen jammed in. There were THREE norvirus outbreaks in the 20 months we were there. On two such occassions, after we had been quaratined for 3 days there were additional reported "cases", my conclusion they had to be staff related. The food is only acceptable, with very long wait times in the dining room. Servers in the dining room went to cleaning rooms, then back to the dining room. Management staff was often not helpful, during snow storms unreasonable wait times to be shoveled out, in spite of medical necessity.

Renter Beware

If you have ever dealt with a shady pushy used car salesman. That is what the managers and sales staff are like. BEWARE when signing a lease with them. The have a 3 month must pay when you sign up clause in the contract. Even if the person die's before the move in date the estate is responsible to pay the remaining 3 months. The carpet in the halls are dirty and old. The hallways need painting. If you HATE CIGARETTE SMOKE DO NOT MOVE anyone in here. Residents can smoke in the rooms it smells like a smoky bar in the halls by the room. They try to cover up the smell with glade plugins. Please read other reviews before moving here. One review I read after leasing was about the chief with a dirty uniform. The First Day my mom moved in I met Him

Managers gone wrong

I moved my grandmother in 3 years ago. For the first year everything went well. Her room was always clean, the staff was cheerful and dependable, the managers were devoted and really cared for the residents. However things have changed for the worse. Over half of the original staff has left due to corporate bullying. The service in the dinning room is barely up to par. The food is tolerable. My grandmothers room is clean enough (I guess). Another thing that saddens me, They will take on people who do not belong there. This is an independent living! A good majority of people that the have newly taken in are at a higher level of care, wich is frustrating for the people who live there and have all their wits about them. The most concerning thing is.....Why can't this place keep a manager for longer than 5 months? Just when these people get use to one and feel secure....the suddenly gone. Wich is always disturbing to the residents. However it gives them something new to talk about in the dinning room.

Big let down

We were very disappointed with the food. I wrote them a letter that gave them the 30 day notice, I got a call asking if there was any way to keep my father there... it was my aunt and she's a woman. They weren't smart enough to check the files and there was no phone directory for residents. The managers weren't there long enough for the residents to know what their names were. Since February of this year there had been 13 changes in management. There is one woman from a care tenders agency that has an office there and she kind of oversees whatever gets prescribed unless you do something else but she couldn't give the care my aunt needed because she had too many folks so we had private care. The situation with medication was outrageous, it's partly my aunts fault and partly lack of appropriate oversight. I think they had a really good idea and expanded too rapidly and too broadly.

Disappointed

I had a very disappointing experience with this community while helping my sister, and I feel it’s important to share our concerns with others considering this place. There appear to be serious issues with transparency in contracts, including what felt like a bait-and-switch situation. The quality of services and overall maintenance has been poor, and there doesn’t seem to be a reliable maintenance team in place. Administration changes frequently, which creates inconsistency and confusion for residents and families. The food quality is also lacking, with many meals appearing overly processed. Additionally, important senior safety features, such as emergency call buttons, are either insufficient or unexpectedly included as extra charges within the rent. Costs are quite high—ranging from [Amounts removed] per month—despite limited amenities like the absence of full kitchens (only small, bar-sized refrigerators are provided). Despite these high fees, there is little assistance offered to seniors or individuals with disabilities. There were also concerns about accounting practices and unexpected rent increases with very little notice. Long-term tenants have reported similar frustrations, including being asked to contribute cash tips for staff during the holidays, which felt inappropriate. Communication with management and ownership has been extremely difficult, with little to no response to concerns or complaints. Overall, I would not recommend this facility based on our experience.

Would not recommend

I would have to say 1 on all of the above. #1 They promise you everything and give you nothing. #2 They say they have room cleaning. They vacuumethe middle of the room and slosh out the toilet. No dusting, no other cleaning. We have lived here 10 months, they have never dusted, never cleaned the shower once! I am not blaming that on the cleaners. They also work in the kitchen. They are probably in my room for 5!! minutes #3 I don't really know what that means. If it is referring to the staff, the managerial staff, not much interaction. The younger workers are really nice!...#4 no care at all. There are people here who don't need to be here. One lady here had on the same clothes for 3 days. I mentioned it to the lady at the desk. I said she needs help. The lady at the desk went to her room and told her that people were complaining that she smelled bad. The lady was in tears!...#5 a 1 definitely!! ....#6 the food is a joke here. Same thing over and over. It's a joke her mealtime is SURPRISE!! Sometimes they run out of the main meal after they serve just a few tables. The food is never consistent!! In a nut shell, the food here is terrible. We have chicken probably 4 days a week.... #7 the activities here are terrible. If you like bingo this is the place for you. They play some kind of horse racing. We have one group that comes 1 time a month and sings. That's about it!!.... #8...Absolutely too much for what we get. The building is old and they put a bandage on a serious situation. The elevator was down for 3 weeks. Since I'm in a wheelchair, I, as well as many others were stuck in our room all that time!! I would not recommend this place to anyone!!

Review for Holiday Durham Regent

My apartment was not cleaned or painted prior to occupancy. It was completely INFESTED WITH ROACHES FROM HUGE TO JUST HATCHED. The bathroom faux wood vinyl is ripped, scuffed and the sealant edges retain water which gets moldy. The toilet was not secured to the floor nor was the seat screwed onto the toilet. The heavy wooden rolling closet doors fall off the track if you attempt to use them. ! My windows are welded shut which I believe is a fire code violation. They do not have screens so I have NO ACCESS to fresh air which I enjoy. I've asked them 4 times and am handed the same bs of, 'they're on order!!' Their food is beyond, so far past, disgusting!!The housekeeping is a joke. They just take filth from one apartment to the other. They are NIT allowed in my apartment...EVER!! The art & activities Manager & the front desk manager run this place. Housekeeping personnel work the apartments then lunch & dinner doubling as waitstaff for crumby pay!! They are ill mannered...rightfully so...and they take it out on the residents paying $[removed] to $[removed]/month!! For roughly $[removed]+/day this hell hole should not have your food being slung across the table!! Or, have it screamed at you...'you want ice cream, cake, pie. The food is abysmal but, it's kind of like prison...eat or starve...so, we eat. I'm from the generation of cleaning your plate. I don't subscribe to that theory but most residents comply...never complaining or requesting warmed Quiche vs stone cold!!!

Bright Sales Pitch to a Sad Reality

Churchill Manor, and Atria in General, pulled a bait and switch on my father and our family. Their tour prior to deciding on a place for my dad to live showed everything as being amazing and then after he moved in, the falsehoods in their sales pitch started to show and things continued to go downhill. Issues ranged from being told that the Manor bus ran wide hours and could be used for medical and recreational trips whereas the reality was that the bus hours were being further and further restricted when the bus was running at all and was only for medical appointments to food selection and quality failing expectations spectacularly and their "Anytime Cafe" that was sold as always being stocked and having a good selection often running empty and having only very few options even when stocked. The rent increases increases were also predatory for a clientele on fixed incomes with my dad witnessing multiple other residents pushed out because they couldn't afford the double digit increase.
