Just Okay

Some of the staff were friendly, and were some not. We did not have a good experience. The food was okay. For other families looking into this place, if you have a memory care perosn that needs a place just for supervision and for meals it is okay. But for assisted living, and socialization don't go there. They had activities but my loved one did not participate. Not too many were interesting. They were geared around memory care.

Not the nicest place to go

My loved one didn't get any care, he was kind of left in his room to fend for himself. They provided excellent meals, but I had to tend to a majority of his care. That included cleaning his bathroom and changing his clothing & bedding whenever I visited. Communication between the community and myself was good. They promised to fix things and they did, but it was just one thing after the next. There was a lack of activities as well; I'm sure they were short staffed so that was likely the root of a lot of issues. The staff that they did have weren't very workable. It wasn't a clean place, as common areas weren't well-maintained. I finally found out that they only clean their rooms once a week, and I don't think that's enough for someone who has dementia. Because they only had weekly housekeeping, I often had to clean his room and pick up myself. I also didn't like that the memory care unit is on the second floor. One elevator is all they had for all the residents who were in wheelchairs, used walkers, or confined to a bed. It was inconvenient because there was oftentimes a wait for the elevator, as the dining room was downstairs.

Serious Concerns About Care and Leadership at The Harbors

I want to share concerns about the care provided at The Harbors over the past two years. Unfortunately, the facility fell short from the beginning, and despite management’s efforts, no improvements were made during my mother's stay. Frequent issues included soiled clothing and bedding, unanswered calls for help, and preventable injuries. The room conditions were poor, with unpleasant odors and unsanitary communal areas. While some caregivers provided excellent care, the facility was affected by high staff turnover and inconsistent attention. High turnover is common, but it often stems from poor leadership. An organization like The Harbors demands leadership that prioritizes a positive employee culture, one that values resident programming, wellness, and above all, compassion. The residents of The Harbors deserve better - it is the duty of such a facility to ensure that they receive the utmost care, attention and respect they all deserve.

no, don't waste your time

Please consider other options for your loved one. This is an assisted living warehouse of disabled elderly. The urine smell hits you as soon as you walk through the doors, and saturates each floor. Cleaning is not a priority. Some of the staff are kind, considerate and great at their jobs, but most of the staff are bored and inattentive- including the unhelpful administrators. The food is institutionalized- grey and unappetizing. This is a depressing facility. We have reported The Harbors to the State ombudsmen for investigation. My sister spent 2 miserable years there, her health deteriorated, both physical and mental. We were finally able to move her into a clean, activity based, well trained-staffed facility.

As long as [name removed] remains Executive Director of that facility, I would avoid it at all costs. The problems start from the top. Any communication with family was monitored through the executive director. Staffing was not good. Lacking in employees at the time mom was there. And when they did show up...they holed themselves up in the offices rather than checking on residents and interacting. Much turnover. My suggestion for improvement: hire a new executive director.

Extremely disappointed. Very unprofessional

The staff mainly the aids are extremely rude and do not like to do their jobs and would lie about what they did during the day. They would have trouble getting a nurse on duty to be able to pass out meds. The kitchen forgets to bring peoples food up all the time. [name removed] the manager is extremely unprofessional and unorganized. She had us paying for care package that their staff doesn't even do and she couldn't explain the charges when I asked. They have a bus for appointments but the staff couldn't figure out the ramp, the driver was never contacted ahead of time so we were late and missed the appointment. Also the driver did not know how to secure a wheelchair so when she hit the brakes my mom almost fell onto the floor.

Would not recommend and

If we could rate The Harbors Senior Living a 0 we would. It was awful. My client cried to me every day to get her out of there. Where do I begin?! There was a male resident that kept going into my female clients room. One Saturday morning she woke up and he was sitting in a chair watching tv with his pj's on. She was afraid. They did nothing about it. She was scolded for pressing her call button and one aide said to her that they were not her slave. She was served eggs and sausage most days and I had to bring in cereal to be served to her and they still didn't serve it to her. The toilet seat was left broken for about a month after mentioning to several staff. Wait times we're awful and her room was next to aides office. Transportation to appointments is supposed to be provided but there isn't a back up driver so when one driver quits it takes a month for a new driver. Yes [name removed] the owner-director thinks she is a good director because she gives family her cell phone number but it's because she has to. The staff doesn't do their job unless they hear from her. She gave my client her cell phone number to call her personally. The staff cannot be counted on to do their job. She went 12-14 days between showers.

Would not recommend. Poor staff and conditions.

[name removed], who is in charge, is very tough to get ahold of via phone. When we decided to move my loved one to a different facility, the last 5 or 6 days he was without T.V. service and they didn't fix the problem for 5 days. The food is unbelievably terrible. He had many items of clothing, bedding, etc. not returned after it was taken to be washed, even though his name was on them. I had various issues in the final month he was there and between [name removed] and the head nurse, no one seemed to have an answer and needed to get back to me, which rarely happened.

Proceed with Caution

Unfortunately caregivers were never around to care for my loved one. And I feel that they were very mismanaged. Somebody was either in over their head or they just didn't care.

Not appropriate for advanced dementia

My father who has advanced dementia was promised level 4 care. Because of lack of training, and horrible communication between the care-givers and management my dad suffered continuous thirst and hunger. He needed to be fed (as provided by the level 4 care that we were paying for) but food was brought to his room and put out of his reach, with no one to help him eat. The two months that he lived there he lost a considerable amount of weight. Medication administration is not well controlled. Our family took over medication administration to save my father from missing his medications. I would not recommend The Harbors for anyone with dementia.

Waiting and can't follow medical directions.

Missed meds. Long waits for lift assist, just waited 1.5 hrs. Father sliding out of wheel chair. Short staffed according to staff, but is good according to director... Inappropriate foods given with dietary restrictions often. Facility smells like pee.

Watermark Neglect

I feel that the watermark does deliver what it advertises . I feel that patients rights are being violated, they fail to communicate with the family. The residents linen are. It washed weekly as promised, leaky shower stalls ( safety hazard). Management is never available to speak. I also do not understand how a LPN has so much power over patient care. Many staff members are untrained and lack the support of the administration. I am not satisfied with drugs being added to my fathers regimen without the family being aware of it. My father has been on only a few outings. However, I did no appreciate it when they took him out I. Pajamas and slippers like a vagabond. Much of his care is dependent on my sibling. On more tha one care the agency which looks over facilities had to go out and set up a meeting in order for measures were taken to protect the patient. Management was in denial until pictures contradicted their statement, it’s hard to refute hard evidence, I do not belie result they provided 6,250.00 of care was delivered and unnecessary purchase were made to exhaust his funds sooner. It also did not help do put a nurses lounge across from his room,. This institution needs a lot of work if they to keep their doors open. Having exhausted most of his funds they are trying to stress him out, agitate him, and make him. Violent., to justify more drugs.
