It's important to remember that my father lived at Elderwood two years ago. Some of the issues I had with the place may be irrelevant by now. I did not feel like they offered a level of care that my father required even though they claimed that they did. They were made very aware of the assistance with certain daily needs that my father required. They even did thier own medical evaluation of him! They admitted him anyway, and then neglected those needs after his admittance. Those needs were: - assistance with showering - assistance with toileting - assistance with finding his way around the facility - assistance with dressing -assistance with taking meds -assistance with morning and evening personal hygiene - washing your face/brushing your teeth. It seemed to me like they called themselves an assisted living facility and even claimed to offer enhanced assisted living, but in reality, a resident there was more of a senior living independent living level. I say that because that because they did not have the staffing required to attend to residents in need properly. I had to go there and do my father's laundry, clean his apartment, and change his sheets weekly. My father ultimately advanced to a level of care that they finally admitted they couldn't accommodate after he had a fall that landed him in the hospital. The injuries he had from this 'fall' were not consistent with injuries you would see from a fall unless the resident fell down a flight of stairs - which is exactly what I suspect my father did. Possibly a resident could have had the injuries my father had if they were physically beaten or kicked. I cannot recommend the facility.

At first glance Brookdale seems like an expensive dream come true for your loved one. When you take the "tour" all staff is called to arms, all residents are gathered in the common room or other areas in the facility engaged with staff, and staff & residents are engaged in activities, the facility is spotless, daily menu's, passed & future outside activities, stimulation activities (since this is an Alzheimer assisted living facility) and general care are discussed. Sounds great, right?? I would suggest making random visits. Maintenance staff takes days to address issues (if at all), 4 care givers on staff at any given time (when you can find them), activities not the staff/resident engagement presented during tour & management shows interest in your concerns but does not address them. My family member has been here for over a year, his room is always dirty, sink unusable, he is rarely groomed/bathed, medical issues and injuries not addressed, toiletries never replenished (toilet paper) and 2 costly resident fee increases, this last one for "grooming expense" which is funny since a family member had personally had to do that each visit due to the lack thereof. Though this facility is better then some out there, the cost does not represent the care.

My sister in law is not happy living at Brookdale. She said the place is dirty and she had cobwebs in her bathroom. She does like the food. She only likes two people at this community. They do not have many activities to keep her challenged.

My loved one was not given all the proper care and attention they should have received. The staff communication was not great. Some of the meals were good others were not. On the weekends they only have two caregivers for everyone. That was not good because when you would go to visit a resident you could hear everyone needing help and the caregivers could not get to everyone on time. My loved one was not also receiving their medication like the doctor had ordered. My loved one enjoyed the activities offered they were very active. Overall the experience was not good.

We heard so many positive comments from both residents and their families, plus the fact my sister and I could both agree that Bassett Park Manor was the best fit for mom, that we were really disappointed in her move. We were not given an appointment time for her move so we assumed any time on Friday was okay. Ended up with actual move on the weekend without the director of health and wellness not being there, confusion about her meds, her room was not ready, and felt we were left to our own devices regarding requesting help with issues. This has left us uncomfortable in that since both of us are out of state that we cannot check on her weekly to be sure her needs are being met. Also, they are being bought out by Brookdale as of 8/1/14, to become the largest provider of assisted living, nursing homes, etc. in the U.S.

They kept raising the rates, and never had a good explanation for why they were doing that. It was a lot more than the regular 3% or so most communities go up. They didn't do much just laundry, and meals, and medication management, and that was it.

Now the home has included an increase of $200 for the distribution of meds! This was the norm for assisted living! Individual rooms are not cleaned properly dusting is not done on a regular basis. In fact I cleaned my moms room to find dirt on the blinds about 6 mo worth. This home provides a water cooler near the dining room but no cups when I looked into the water catch it was full and filthy with I can only guess. Your supervision struts but is blind to the less obvious problems. These old problems have yet to be addressed. The home only wants positive responses which in good faith I cannot give.

The DoN was confrontational, a bully, deceptive, and rather rude. She was extremely difficult to work with. It was her way or the highway. Asking any questions made her angry. Would Not Recommend for Seniors Needing a Little Help.

We chose Elderwood village because we were told it offered enhanced care that could increase with mom's needs. It seemed that the care never caught up to her needs. We believe we were over promised and under delivered. We're moving mom and not happy with Elderwood Village.

The care of the residents needs to be reviewed. [price removed] a day for the care that is given is quite a lot. There are residents that are on Medicaid which my mom is not.

I would tell others to keep looking. When we toured facilities, we saw about four and felt that Elderwood Williamsville was the best fit for our person. The size of the rooms was a little bit larger. It's an older facility but pretty well appointed. And the director, [name removed], was very sweet and helpful. She sold us on the community that they offered and was very convincing. Unfortunately, and I don't think it was her fault, but I don't think the services they offered really met the description. For example, the rooms were really hot. They were just roasting hot, even for elderly people who like it a little bit warmer. Their policy is to not turn on the AC until June, which is unbearable on the second and third floors. We didn't feel like we should have to fight for things that are just standard comfort. The food was not as good as what was presented during the tour. It was very institutional. It was a disappointing experience. The people were nice and had good rapport with my friend. That was the one positive - that he tried to make the best of the situation and easily won over the staff. I think there's potential there, but there were some things that were disappointing and were not a good fit for our situation.

There is one common area for TV viewing for 70 residents. It is an old TV and the remote is often lost. If a resident pays [number removed] for 1/2 a room perhaps several community TV options would be offered . As well, if a remote is lost nother remote could be available to replace. There is a TV in the room but isolation is not always preferred. Important. Food is terrible, beyond terrible. Fish is served to a fish allergic resident. Food is watered down, vegetables are limp and overcooked, fruit is hard and impossible to cut or chew, boiled hot dogs are the most frequent meal. There are no choices offered. Tea is served without offering of milk or sugar. A person who has lost their wife or husband and their home, everything they know within 6 months of coming to this facility could be offered grief counseling. A family member should not have to call and suggest that. Records indicate such details about residents, questions can be asked. Please provide the care and nourishment needed.

the food is bad at Brokkdale Colonie. The meat is over cooked and of poor quality. My Dad has a hard time eating it . Get anything they tell you in writing as they say anything to get you to choose this facility. They do not have enough staff and the turnover in staff is often.

Not good. Facility is old and depressing and the cost not a savings. They will rope you in at one price then add all theses extra fees. When all is said and done, you will pay as much as the nicer facilities. There are nicer ones down the road and across the street.

They can definitely improve their medical service. There's a lot of confusion and mis-communication among the staff in regards to treatment. Much of the staff is friendly, but some of the nurses can improve their attitude. On a positive note, they are very receptive to hearing feedback from the family members whenever I call.
