The Carriages gets an A+ for staff friendliness, but I'd give it a D on food. All in all, it's a lot better than the place I came from. Everyone should research the food wherever they want to go.

Adjusting well

After an illness and rehab time, my 88 year old father was forced to accept his independent lifestyle had come to an end. A first anger at losing his independence was felt, but with a friendly atmosphere and helpful assistance he is now happy in Elmcroft and setteling into his new environment.

Liked the staff but pricing is likely to change, making it less affordable. They will probably go to base room pricing with level of care. A little too far away for our preference, but overall nice facility and residents were well cared for. They do respite care.

Good workers but not truthful

They seem to be very good with all the elderly people there, including my mother. The only thing is they do not take the time to work one-on-one with any of them. They do not tell them truthful answers to questions and that should be done so the dementia patients can accept the reality of things.

I had a decent tour of this community. Everything went well, and everyone was very kind to my family and myself. The community looks very nice, everything I saw looked nice and very clean. The staff was very kind and friendly. There are nice resources available for the residents. It was a lovely experience, but a bit expensive for our budget.

A Good Place for Seniors

My mother recently moved into a nice studio apartment at Elmcroft of Milford Chase. She's still fairly independent, but needs help with medication and meals. Eating with other residents in a dining room is ideal for her. I looked at eight facilities in the Atlanta area and this was my favorite by far and fortunately the closest to where I live. It almost has a boutique feel- small and intimate with many in-house services: doctors see residents in their room, physical therapy on site, dentist, audiologist, manicurists, hair salon. Also, bus trips for shopping and lunches in local restaurants. A unique feature which I love is the building is a big circle, so in whatever direction you head, you end up back at the place you started- wonderful for seniors who are disoriented. Our overall experience has been very positive. The building and grounds are lovely- peaceful and quiet. The administrators are warm, caring and easy to work with, and the staff is friendly and helpful- almost to a fault. The only issue we've had is to ask for some privacy measures and less supervision- staff entering her room throughout the day with her medication or to check on her with just a quick rap, instead of waiting for her to say, "Come in." She keeps her bathroom door propped open and was walked in on by a staff member (all women) when just emerging from the shower which startled and embarrassed her. Our request to correct this issue was responded to promptly and courteously. And I appreciate more attention than less with a new resident. It is easier to ask for less supervision than to need more. The quality of the food is inconsistent- some meals delicious, some poor and in my opinion too many sweets- desert served after lunch and dinner with ice cream several afternoons a week. We also have asked for additional safety bars to be added to the bathroom which have not yet been installed. These are minor issues compared with how happy my mother is in her new home and how satisfied we both are that she is in good hands and receiving good care.

FOOD

One of the biggest complaints I get from my mother-in-law is the FOOD. She is used to country cooking. But it must not be too bad, as she has gained 30 lbs in the last 3 months. She has no will power, so she eats everything, even though she is diabetic and should not have it all, she eats it any way.

You need to hire more help for patient care. The care takers or partners are overworked. It is too much to expect what you ask of them. Only one housekeeper. Really!

Observations from a distance.

Sorry, I'm unable to give first hand information for I am not the occupant. Mrs. Susan Kuykendall moved into EcoCroft at Milford Chase August 27th and she seems to be liking the facility very well. I am merely a neighbor who, along with my late wife, happened to know Mrs. Kuykendall and her late husband since about 1960. I still try to be of any assistance that I'm physically able to handle like being able to take her for groceries, very light shopping and sometimes we have a meal together away from the facility. Mrs. Kuykendall, being new to the facility is of course having to make a drastic change from where she owned her home, drove her auto, and had been independant since 1995. She is likely to get upset quickly, for having to depend on anyone as much as she does now , is taking some getting used to.. Like I say, she seems to like things pretty good and will adjust in a couple of months I'm sure.

Things to Know for Navigating Care

At first our experience was pretty much positive. They were able to get my dad into a nice clean room and provide him with everything he needed right away. However, my dad's behavior started to get worse and Carriages, in my opinion, was not ready to take that on. We found out that my dad was given the door code from another resident and went outside on his own. We were also told the front desk person gave him the last digit. The communication between the nursing team and administration also could be improved. They are both kind, but have different "rules". It has been hard to navigate what is actually being done for his care. My dad is also likely being moved out of Carriages this week into [community removed] because his level of care is too much for Carriages. We are trying to navigate this in real time. While I appreciate Carriages being able to accommodate him so quickly, I think having a better understanding of what amount of nursing care they can provide would have been better for all of us involved. My dad's behaviors have gotten very bad. I do feel if he had been at a higher level of care facility, a lot of the hurt (financial and emotional) could have been avoided.

Would recommend--team is friendly and responsive

My mom is no longer there...she left last September as she required more care. I think the facility needs more help and during the time of my mom's stay they were experiencing problems with their cooks. The food was a miss at times but we understand they were in several months of inconsistent kitchen staff.

Memory Care lacking staff

The room is fine. And the facility is clean and taken care of. The memory care needs more staff. One person is not enough to care for those residents. So often, the residents are bored, sit in a chair all day, little to no activities. The large amount we pay for our loved one, we should have the better more personable and friendly care. The Assisted Living part is good. But Memory care for sure needs some help. Not all of the residents are mobile on their own, so there should at the very least be two people working this wing at all times. Thank You.

Room for improvement but trending up

They have a new nurse in charge ([name removed]) and she's made a world of difference. Continuing to do the little things (if you're on the schedule for 2 baths per week - make it happen, don't give a bunch of excuses). So far so good - [name removed] coming in made everything better. Before, I would have given them a 2

Review for Carriage Crossing at Rivergate

This is difficult to do if I can't have the questions one by one sorry. Food was bad, it is dirty, staff were ok. That place is only good for totally independent people. Staff are nice but I don't think they deliver the care that is presented upon admission. My dad was found on the floor many times by myself or family and when we called for help it took a long time to get anyone. One time I went hunting for a staff member to help and had a difficult time finding anyone. They need more help!
