Really Good With My Mom

They're really good with my mom. They actually get her to smile and laugh which is hard to do. The cost has gone up but my mom's care has also gone up so I understand that. They do really well. She's now in a wheelchair. When she started she was able to us a walker and get around a little bit but she's had a few falls while trying to use the walker by herself which she shouldn't have been doing. She does pretty well with the wheelchair but they're really good about helping her around too. She likes bingo. They do have crafts but my mom has Parkinson's so it's hard for her. It would be nice if there was something besides bingo for her but she does like that. I've requested baths 3x a week and they make sure to do that. Anything that I've asked them to do they are really good about doing. They're quite good with her and check on her every hour.

Exceptional Staff!

We found it to be very accommodating. The staff is exceptional. My mom is pleased and she's quite fussy. Any issues they attend to quickly. I've come at all hours of the day and I'd say every shift is good. I haven't run into anybody that I've had a problem with. It seems like there could be some more activities and mom's room is rather small but it works for her right now.

I liked this one the best however although we don't know the price range yet it will most likely be higher than what she can afford. Pros - can accommodate up to 100 residents which would give her a wider range of friends to choose from. Residents were from all stages of life which would provide a larger range of ladies she can socialize with. Activities were the best out of the three visited. Suites were spacious and had a sink and small fridge. Dining area was large and very nice. Choice of two meals to choose from for lunch and dinner. Her own mailbox which gives her a feeling of independence since the mail is very private to her. Hallways had lots of areas to stop and sit in a comfortable chair if they needed to. Residents are encouraged to decorate their white pretty doors as well as have a shelf outside of door to place nick knacks or a special picture. Comfortable and spacious living area with large fireplace. Cons ... mass is held in an area where residents can smoke on the other side of the glass doors. Garden area is not smoke free. Concerns about ratio of staff to residents.

I loved this place - looks very similar to the Assisted Living place in Alpena that AB was in. We can afford this one, too. I am definitely bringing dad back to this one.

My Tour Experience at Autumn House West

I liked the community and it was family oriented. Their memory care unit is a secured unit, and we were able to find a community that allowed my loved one to go into assisted living.

My Tour Experience

I had a virtual tour at Autumn House West. It just didn't seem to be as nice of a facility as the one I ended up choosing, yet it actually cost more.

Good place. Awful food.

Staff is great! Rooms are really nice. The entire facility is kept very Clean and beautiful. They keep it nice looking. Comfortable feeling here. Food is awful. Generally served cold. Generally tastes terrible and the chef does not care. Many people have spoken to him, he says it is what it is. Although there was a meeting with residents, it has not changed.

A Positive Experience

When my friend had an accident and needed help to recover, she went into Elmcroft until she was able to go back home. For the most part, she was very satisfied with everything here. The community was clean all the time. The only complaint was about the food, it was not very good.

Good community but didn't meet care needs

My mother was here and things were good. We decided to move her because they couldn't provide the care she needed. They did nothing wrong they just didn't have the staff to meet her care demands.

They need to understand they are not babysitters. They need to remember it is not a nursing home, but a retirement community.

Review for Autumn House West

The staff is very nice and listens to concerns. Seems like they may need more staff to take care of patients. Takes longer than 5 minutes to get someone to respond and sometimes had to hit the button more times. Had concerns where they didn't shower her for over a week the one time so you have to aware of what's going on so you can let them know. Had an instance where the bathroom toilet was left very dirty and had to bring it to their attention 2 times. My mom was only there 2 months and loved the gentleman on the second floor. He was always there to help her. They were very good at letting me know if something was out of the ordinary and they had to call 911.

Pretty Place but Not All It Was When We Toured

They're going through personnel changes, which have resulted in some key differences between when we toured and the current reality. Most notable are a lack of onsite activities--especially cultural/educational, as well as hardly any offsite outings; few healthy food options (standard American diet of meat, cheese, sugar and alcohol with very few veg, gluten-free, raw/fresh, ethnic, etc. options); and poor quality maid service. I will say that the maintenance staff is responsive and helpful, the office staff and some of the assisted living staff seem friendly and hardworking, and the exercise programs are good. I would suggest giving the newer staff time to hopefully make improvements, especially if you are an active/healthier senior. Convenient location at Maple and Telegraph (although not safely walkable to much); competitive monthly rate; pretty setting and beautiful decor in the renovated sections; in-unit laundry; unassigned dining room seating and anytime dining service; active (former) activities schedule with former director citing more to come (i.e. community garden, book club, performances, restaurant outings, etc.).
