Good experience

We chose this facility because it is a sister facility to another one that we originally looked at. The other facility did not have any openings for respite, so they steered us to Willow Lake Place. I thought that it was conveniently located, when I got off work I could stop in to see her. I would recommend to others who are looking, my mom really enjoyed it.

Review of Willow Lake Place

This is a great community! When I think of what makes the great I think about several things. First the care and concern that comes from the employees. The aides are truly kind, compassionate and competent. [Name removed], [name removed], [name removed], [name removed] and [name removed] are names that come to mind. They extent their care and concern beyond serving drinks with food. Second, the administrative staff have an open door policy and an open mind when I have a concern. Third, and last, I appreciate that my mom can go out on scenic drives to lunch. Sending an aide to assist those who need extra help is helpful. It wouldn't be an honest review if I didn't offer some suggestions. During meals and when getting the residents up for breakfast and to bed, three aides are needed. When only two aides are working residents have to wait too long to be helped and if someone needs help going to the bathroom during a meal then it makes it real difficult on the staff left in the dining room. Several residents also need help to stay at a table or to help them eat. If it was your mom or dad you wouldn't want them waiting to go to bed or to the bathroom, would you? My last suggestion is to offer more structured activities on the weekend. The residents are restless. A scenic drive would be nice. Thank you for all you do and hopefully this review will help you improve this great facility and make it even better.

They're not perfect but they're getting there!

I am very pleased with this facility thus far. The staff is working with my Mother and they are learning a lot about her and her needs. They have a great supportive administrative staff and they made it easy to work with all of the different people that are there. The only reason why I am not giving them 5 stars is that not everyone is up to speed. They are not perfect, but they are getting there. The staff treats my mom well and they are very caring. The evening staff is tired and seems overworked. They still use an agency nursing staff at night and I would like to see them get fully staffed. For activities, they have things like bible study, exercise classes, church, and times where my mom can get her done. I have also been here during meal time and the food looks good with a lot of variety. They serve things like salmon, chicken, and steak. I would recommend this facility to other families.

When I toured Kesslerwood Place, I thought it was very nice, but it was 3 stories. That was too much for us. The facility itself was very clean and the tour guide was informative, but it was not what we were looking for at the time.

A Wonderful and Understanding Community

My mom is doing well and likes the community. The staff are attentive and punctual . They keep the community in good shape and clean. She is very picky eater but overall enjoys the meals. Mom is not typically a very social person but does seem to enjoy participating in some of the activities offered to the residents.

Great Staff!!

I love the staff that work at this community, they all have been wonderful to my mother and treat her just like family. She has been enjoying an occasional game of bingo as well as many outings with the other residents including the movies. The kitchen could use some overall help thought. They are very short staffed it always seems like they are running behind due to the amount of people working. They could also have more variation in the meals they prepare.

I am satisfied with this community.

Mom seems to be getting along with everyone at this community. I think the staff is great, however I do not think there is enough staff for the amount of residents. They are handling her medication. The maintenance staff are helpful. They offer daily activities and the staff are working on encouraging the residents to participate. Mom likes some of the food. The community seems to be clean and I would recommend it.

The Right Choice, Great Fit!

Beautifully clean and well-maintained community that we helped chose for my parents. Well balanced meals. They provide snacks and drinks for the residents between meals. They have plenty of activities available for the residents to participate. My parents were able to decorate their room the way they wanted to. The staff is very friendly and there seems to be good communication between staff and residents. I feel they are in a very safe environment.

The tour guide let me know that on the weekends there is no available staff. I really liked that they were honest about this but, unfortunately this didn't really make me feel comfortable. Knowing that my mother would not have someone on the weekend to communicate with me if anything happened was not acceptable. It was an up-kept place but, they didn't really offer many activities.

The staff is caring, competent, and takes their jobs seriously

Make safety first. Always have the call need near the patient. If a patient has a need address it but look around and see if you there is something else the patient needs. Only leave for an emergency in another patient room. Understaffed. Like every other place, but a call light shouldn't go unchecked for an hour. Also they need to be sure and leave a way for the residents to contact staff. The staff is caring, competent, and takes their jobs seriously. They treat their patients like they were caring for their own family.

Beware!!!

It was a clean facility. It was good in the beginning but things changed towards the end. It was more expensive. We picked because it was close to my job. I'm giving these numbers because it was the first place, it was a very tough decion putting my loved one here, and I don't feel like they were as compassionate with how I felt. I did not feel comfortable with my loved one being here.

Improvement in Communication Needed

I haven't given them high marks in some of the categories, but I also acknowledge that my family members and I may need to adjust our expectations when it comes to long-term care. Like any facility, some of the caregivers do a good job. That said, my biggest "complaint" is that they have not done a good job of communicating with us. I tried to contact the director of nursing several times to schedule an initial care- plan meeting. She didn't return our calls or get back with us when she said she would. By the time we met, our loved one had been at Kesslerwood for a while! I consider that unacceptable. When we finally met and went over our loved one's care plan, she was prepared and did a good job. I'd also say the staff hasn't done the best job communicating with us about our loved one's medications. Times when our loved one has fallen or had other issues, they've been prompt in making us aware of the situation. But when it's involved changing/increasing our loved one's medications, they haven't kept us well informed.

Not a good experience

The response time from staff is very slow- even when I visit, I have to track them down. They were neglectful with the medication administration. They were not forthcoming about injuries received from an aide. Thankfully the hospice nurse was very informing, otherwise we wouldn't know anything.

We didn’t really care for Bloom at German Church. The staff and everything was fine. We just didn’t care for the set-up. Outdoors, right out front, there’s a pond with geese that frequent it, and consequently there's lots of goose poop.
