What I appreciated the most was the affordable cost of care. I wish they paid more attention to hygiene. But the staff is great at calming the residents down during meltdowns.

Holland Village; Review

My mother has resided in the Assisted Living community at Holland Village since about [date removed] My overall experience with the Personal care Unit has been quite positive. I realize there are many challenges in staffing a Retirement Community to care for its elderly residents in this day and age but overall I think Holland Village steps up to provide commendable services in most all areas. If I were to mention my concerns it would be to make visitors feel a bit more welcomed upon entering the Personal Care Lobby. This is not always the case. And from the perspective of a family member with a parent living in Personal Care it would be helpful to have some sort of personnel guide available so I know which staff member to contact when questions come up about my mothers heath and overall well being. Thank you...Robert Holland

Nice place

Unfortunately my loved one was only here a short time, but overall I thought they did an excellent job at Springfield Residences. The care staff were all very friendly and compassionate, and the facility and rooms were beautiful. I very much encourage those looking into senior living in the area to check out Springfield Residences.

Review for Springfield Senior Living

Some things good. Some things need to improve. [removed name] & I've been here 5 months now. Monthly calendar posted with something for everyone. Good activities. Wonderful artwork by the residents. I would suggest more diverse work staff. Needs increase in staff. Food is good. We have a new resident council rep for the 2 monthly meetings. 1 for Food & dining room. The other all inclusive. The heat needs to be fixed for good. I approach this matter somewhat differently as I am a 24/7 live in companion in my 50s. Most other residents are generation older than I. $ more affordable than a place like Sunrise from which [removed name] & I moved in July. We were given notice recently of a $ increase beginning in Jan. due to rise in utility costs, etc. Plenty of notice but we'll be paying for heat we've yet to get. Staff are generally polite and capable. However some of them sometimes need to be mindful of their words and tone of voice to the residents. I am sensitive to this as I lived in a 3 generation home for 10 years with my pat. grandmother. I am first gen through my father & grandmother.

Unneeded "bells and whistles" increase cost, are of no value"

Very large facility with many amenities not of use for my mom. Also high facility maintenance results in a higher price.

Improvements needed and I would second guess leaving my loved one here.

The experience my dad had while staying there wasn't too good at times. They are very disorganized and have miscommunication and seem to only be about getting payment. There were a lot of issues with the food and medication etc. my dad was only there for a year and I removed him from there.

Our experience

The facility is clean and room is nice. Areas to improve: Communication Name badges, at least first name and title Food is awful, order ahead of time so you can get a meal your loved one can eat.

Things to know before moving in

Lobby is clean. Other common areas have a distinct smell. Elevators are dirty and smell. Trash from residents room not regularly emptied. Can find bags of trash put out by residents. Apartments get a wipe/swipe. Trash cans in rooms missing trash bags. Trash with soiled material like depends and liners left in room. Soiled clothes from fecal incontinence not placed in plastic bags. Quality of care is Inconsistent and dependent on individual. Very understaffed. 1 care giver per floor!!! Plus 1 med tech. My mom has unfortunate incontinence issues. They do not round regularly and it can take 45 plus minutes for someone to come. So if you can't wait you're out of luck. Staff is not visible on the floors. They seem to congregate on the first floor or somewhere 5. Admin a 4 they listen to concerns. Some resolved easily and others you get an excuse. They are frequently out of basic things like condiments, sugar, milk. They do not offer multiple options so if you can't chew or easily digest what is offered you're out of luck. Food is also regularly cold. Not cooked at order or plated at the meal. Done ahead and sitting out. Cost is a good price but the quality of what you get is poor and that is just a reflection of cost. You get what you pay for. Unfortunately our budget is tight. While this is affordable, the services you get on paper seem great but the quality of what you are getting is poor. The building is old and the grounds are old. The exterior needs a lot of work. There is insufficient lighting in the parking areas so leaving when it is dark is unsafe. The parking area is limited and has many potholes. My parents got a bigger room with lots of sunlight which they didn't have. There are many things that would be more acceptable if the care was better. When you know your parents are safe and watched over you can overlook other things. The trade off of dealing with staff that is sparse and generally less caring than where they were has been a struggle. While there are some generally good staff, it's hard to deal with the less caring staff. This facility was also set up for independent living. So the configuration of things like bathroom and kitchenette are difficult to navigate. Had we known the extent of the issues we wouldn't have been surprised. More like buyer be aware. They consider 1 aide per floor to be adequate. There are probably 20 apartments on the floor. So definitely staffed more for independent living than for assisted living. Unfortunately we've experienced the drive of the salesperson to get you to move, saying things that turned out not to be true. And we were pretty clear about my mom's needs and that my dad was also deteriorating.

Holland Village, a CCRC review

Most staff and other residents are very friendly. My apartment is good-sized for my wife and me. We're in independent living, so much of what we have needed so far has come with a fee--transport to medical appointments, someone to stay with my wife when I have to go out, an upgrade from Dish Network tv to Comcast tv.

My review

I do understand that the staff is trying to take care of all the patients. Some days seem better than others, in reference to care of residents & the facility. Sometimes everyone is nice & friendly, & sometimes if I ask a question they seem like it's a bother. I think Milestones is always clean, & staff goes out if their way to be helpful & friendly. They take really good care of the patients. Upstairs, not always.... Sometimes floor in the room not clean, & tables in community room sticky & not that clean. Some workers very helpful & friendly, some others, not that interested in answering QS of the family. Overall, it seems inconsistent. Like I said, some days better than others. And I do understand they are all trying to get their job done.

Just food needs improvement.

Big apartments, nice views and beautiful grounds. The staff could empty trash in the apartments every day and mop floors once a week. The staff very friendly and make a point to call you by name. When it comes to the activities, the staff goes around to apartments to let us know if a movie is playing, activity going on, or if it's happy hour. Food is horrendously awful. Have spoken to the person in charge of dietary with no change. Spoke to the overall director who seemed concerned but no changes. Having a food committee meeting on [date removed]. We will see if anything can be accomplished!!!

Overall- a very nice, caring community that encourages feedback for improvement.

Overall, Springfield has great potential once they get the staffing they need. Most of the staff are very friendly and caring. They interact positively with the residents and are understanding of their needs. With additional staff (and on-site security) the ratings would be much higher. There is a need for more trained staff or training in general at the facility. Especially in food service. Their seem to be a need for organization in food management. The on site menu does not always reflect what is available to be served. The Director does have regular meetings with residents to get their feedback/complaints and try to address them. would recommend it to other families for consideration.

Our families experience

They tell you what you want to hear while there, received a bill for we don't know what & can't get a call back to answer our questions about this bill. I took care of every amount they requested & she owes nothing so would like to understand this bill, we called 4-5 times & no return call. The food is out of a can & bag they don't have cooks just people following directions. Smoke detectors on first & second floors have bin chirping for a month. [name removed] is paying over [fee removed] a month because their doctor thinks she needs meds that her personal Dr didn't find & they have to administer them

A painfully sad ending

Unfortunately I would say it wasn't a good situation for loved one personally. She declined rapidly there and it was torture for me realizing the care wasn't going to be what I'd hoped. But in the end, I know they did more than they were obligated to, and I am grateful to them for what they did do for my loved one.

Our family had an in person tour with Springfield Senior Living and we really enjoyed the admission person at the community, but the community just seemed to be pretty run down, old and dark. We do however recognize it is a real challenge to adapt or upgrade an old or historic building.
