Facility is nice but the rooms do not have a lot of natural lighting and the place would be confusing for my mom to manuver because of the different angles to the building.

Like the Placentia place better because of the rooms. The resident rooms all have a sliding glass door and balcony. Having a room with lots of windows, and natural lighting is important for my mom's eye site. She also loves to sit on the porch. Everything else was comparable so Placentia won out over this one.

Caring daughter

The nursing staff here was wonderful, they were very friendly and helpful, but that was not the case with the kitchen staff. The meals were not good, they tell you in the beginning they are chef prepared meals and you pay a lot of money and I ate here and the food was just not good and it was always cold. They do go all out on activities and have a lot to provide for the residents. Overall, I would recommend. When you bring things to their attention they do follow through, you just have to be persistent. They are very accommodating with peoples needs as well and it is a very homey environment.

The food seemed to always be cold even if he went to the cafeteria. My dad was not a fan of the food. The staff communicated well until Covid and this made everything harder, including medicine distribution and reordering because we were not able to go see our loved one. This community could work for others but do your research to make sure.

As Good as it gets

i suppose it's as good as it gets, but I don't know. My apartment was okay, and I liked it. My children chose this community for me. I would recommend this community to other families. When I was there the food was good but I hear it has declined since then.

The community is very well maintained and all of the bedrooms are kept clean and fresh. The staff have a great response time, my mother had fallen in her bedroom and they had gotten to her very quickly. So far everything seems to be going well and I have no complaints.

Just alright

It is going alright here. They leave her in her room too much. I have talked to them about this twice. I told the staff that they need to take her down for activities. They say they ask her and she says she does not want to go. Well, she is confused, so they need to make more of an effort. She is depressed and she says that all she does is sit in her room and look out the window. She is starting to talk like she may as well not be here. The staff needs to get on top of this. It has been a couple of weeks since I mentioned taking her down for activities and still nothing.

watch everything like a hawk

This is an update to the most recent review cautioning anyone to have an advocate here or anywhere. Today My mother was given her 8 am pills at 11am. Totally unacceptable. STaff member said they were understaffed. I told the director to get out in the hallway and fill in for the missing med tech . Time sensitive pills must be given close to the dosage time. This evening the med tech gave the pills prior to dinner being delivered to the unit. Dinner was delivered 45 minutes late because they were again understaffed. Again I have told the managers that they need to fill in for their missing staff. It is terrible to give a very elderly person dinner after 7pm and to have given the sleeping pills early before they even ate. If you are not on top of this place every single day, you will have no confidence that they have it together.

Caring staff but beware of the promised "sell".

As in every facility if you do not have an advocate involved in every single aspect of your family's care, you are potentially in big trouble. As is often the case the staff for the most part are helpful, kind, and caring. But beware. There is poor coordination. We moved our family member in on a Monday. There was no one there to execute the transition. It took 2 weeks to get the bill correct, to get the call system to be activated, to get thru a full few weeks with all the players who needed intervention in order to get the needs of our family member executed properly. They are understaffed and in some cases poorly staffed. The activities are uninspired and 50 percent of what is on the schedule does not happen. It is all to sell the place. Often one has to call the front desk to have a bathroom in the public spaces cleaned, or to turn the lights on out front at night, or to clean up the dog poop from the resident dog. Management is not visible on the weekends. Everything sort of just coasts with limited oversight. If there was an emergency at 2am and you got a call from your loved one, good luck getting thru to anyone in a leadership position. The staff does not know how to forward the calls. On a one on one basis, the caregivers are kind, caring, helpful. But if you do not have an advocate, your family member could be less protected then you might have been lead to believe. The computers in the library do not work, and yet there are help with computer classes on the schedule. There is a listing for a Rabbi coming, he has not been there in 6 months, There is no PA system so no one can hear. Everything is corporate bottom line. The place functions on a shoe string just trying to get by. I would question everything, monitor everything, double check everything and make surprise visits to find out what is really going on here.

Not as clean as others

it is kind mixed for me . it was quite a contrast. My father was at another one before this one. The other one was very beautiful. Brookdale is not as clean and new. The general are is not as clean as the rooms themselves. They do have a lot of activities but my father doesn't do them. It is hard for me to know if he goes or not.

nice facility, some room for improvement

We have had some issues lately with them not delivering on some of the services they provide. For example, the laundry service has really fallen behind our expectations recently. It is a very nice facility. They are remodeling right now (painting the hallways, redoing the carpeting, etc.) and I know it will all look really nice when done. The staff for the most part tries very hard. Unfortunately it just seems like there have been a few things that we have had to continuously have to get onto them about. Issues with her meds, issues with the laundry, etc.

The communication between the staff members is very poor.

The care isn't as good from when my Dad was there. The communication between the staff members is very poor. They are getting to know her. I just think they could improve on how the staff members talk to each other. They should make sure everyone knows about every patient. My mother was without her glasses and there is times when her hearing aid was not working because it didn't have any batteries. There is certain things they are lacking.

room for improvement

Brookdale Oceanside is a very nice facility with very friendly staff. However, I am not sure that my mother is getting the care that she needs. Also, I have not been satisfied with the level of communication that they have had with me as the primary point of contact. She has been there for a couple months and they have only called me once. So there is definitely some room for improvement.
