Brookdale Oceanside

Mom has only been a resident for about a month. Since I don't spend all day at her residence, but what I have noticed is, not enough staff. On any given day, there may be two or three staff members. I am guessing there are at least 25 to 30 residents in mom's area. I am not sure she is receiving enough assistance when needed. She had a urine stained bed, that had not been changed for over a week. When I asked, the staff member said the sheets should be changed at least weekly. She immediately changed her soiled sheets. Currently, I would rate them a three. I understand the job is not rewarding and is emotional and difficult and I appreciate all that work in that field. I am grateful mom is in a safe place.

I would recommend it, as long as you understand that the facility is pretty old. It is also one of the best values in North county. I would give an overall of a three, because the facility is old and not in the greatest shape. Shape. But the staff was fantastic.

Review for Brookdale Oceanside

Constant staff turnover, personal care fees increase rapidly. Business office is not transparent with billing and charges and difficult to get information when requested. The director told me she doesn't respond to emails only phone messages! The caregivers are kind but not well trained especially when discussing a resident's day. The food seems ok and nutritious. There doesn't seem to be enough stimulation for the residents, they sit at the table asleep or in front of the tv falling asleep and hunched over.

Our Experience

The assisted living facility did not adjust Mom's care when she declined shortly after moving there. She passed away within 11 days and a skilled nursing placement would have been more appropriate the last week, especially.

Memory Care

Used to be Great, now so-so.

I placed my loved one here in Memory Care (MC) in 2023 when the facility was owned by Generations. Since the announcement of the sale to Bayshire last year, the place has gone down hill. The facility is in a major need of a face lift with filthy carpet in the common areas and a leaky roof in the MC dining room. The food has also gone down hill with poor selections at many meals for MC patients. The bright spot is the tenured MC Care Staff and Med Techs who really care about the residents and treat them as if they were their own family. Unfortunately, they appear to be overworked, underpaid, and frequently short staffed, especially on the weekends. New management appears to be trying to remedy the situation, but progress has and continues to be really slow. At one point, I was recommending the facility to many people in the various support groups I attend. However, when people ask me today, I tell them to look elsewhere and have considered moving my loved one myself.

Our Experience

Care staff, med techs and housekeeping staff are great! Upper management, not so much. They won't answer email, phones or texts without asking or sending 2nd requests. Communication is good when loved one has an issue. Move in was a joke, didn't complete paperwork until 2 weeks after already moved in. Meals are plentiful, sometimes served cold, salads could be fresher and meal times are too early with only one hour for each meal but they do have an all day menu of a few items. They should email family members about resident meetings, special events, monthly/daily activity lists. My brother and I visit our loved one twice a week and even then we miss some upcoming events. They need to post things throughout the community instead of just at front desk. We toured 10 communities before Mom chose this one, it was less expensive than others with a couple courtyards (they need to keep better maintained, dirty furniture and fountains not working.) The apartments are small, but clean and nice. Building needs a little upgrade on the outside and the windows could be cleaned a couple times a year. Carpet inside (halls, dining, etc) needs deep cleaning or replaced. The front entrance outside is very large with seating, which our Mom loves.

do not recommend for memory care

I am not a big fan of Brookdale Oceanside, I wouldn't recommend their memory care unit to others. It's hard to say what exactly they could improve on, it's my 1st experience with memory care so I really have nothing to compare it to, but I didn't get the warm and fuzzies from them. The hospice place also told me they wouldn't recommend this facility either. The only reason I went with Brookdale was because of the cost, they offered an all inclusive price that was very reasonable.

Nice facility

It's a very clean facility. Have never noticed any bad smells when entering or going through. The food not sure about, it smells good but some of the residents including my Mom say the food is terrible. My cousin and I are going to go have a lunch and a dinner there in May. Most all of the staff there are very friendly and accommodating.

Very Disappointed

I would never recommend Brookdale Oceanside to anybody. I was very disappointed with them. My loved one's room was very claustrophobic. She was with people who were near insane and drove her nuts. And I don't feel the attendants really cared about taking care of her properly.

I did not like Brookdale Oceanside. They had the nursing home people and assisted living people all on the same floors. So you walk down the hall, and the doors were all open. It looked like a hospital, which was not the environment we were looking for. It also looked like they spent all their money on presentation in the entryway and lobby, as opposed to the residents' rooms and other places. I did not get a good feeling the further we got into the facility.

Not the right fit

If I had a little bit more money I think I would move my loved one out. They are extremely understaffed. The administrative staff are very difficult to get a hold of, if they do get back to us the promises that are made are not withheld. I think that if your loved one is more mobile, it may be a better facility for them.

Our family had an in person tour, and the experience was not a favorable one. It had a nursing home smell to it. There was loud music being played in the memory care unit. The memory care also looked old, and outdated.
