Avalon House on Gerard Court

Overall good experience. Friendly staff and clean facility in a nice neighborhood in McLean. Facility did a good job in keeping me apprised of the resident’s condition. The food was good and prepared by the staff on premises.

My sister was a resident of Avalon House for four years. I was very happy with the level of care which she received from the staff. In particular we would like to thank the two house managers who were very kind to our loved one. Our visits were welcomed and we were confident that the Avalon was a home not just a house.

While there are a lot of nursing homes that have fancier facilities, I’m grateful I placed my wife who had Alzheimer’s in the Avalon residence. The caregivers were exceptionally conscientious and kind to my wife, especially [name removed] . I felt confident that my wife was always well taken care of and never neglected regardless of how difficult the situation sometimes became. I would strongly recommend [name removed] who combined professional competence and expertise with a very warm and loving personality.

The staff at Avalon Laburnum took care of my grandmother in 2017. They were so loving, patient, and kind. Grandma wasn't always easy to care for but they went above and beyond to make sure she was always well cared for. It was evident that they really cared about her and the other residents. Many other assisted living facilities in the area are much more expensive and don't provide such quality one-on-one care. The communication from the staff was great. They were so accommodating and really did a lot to make us feel at home.

Dad has been a resident at Avalon 7 for more than 4 years. The staff welcomed and made him feel at home from day one. Always pleasant, attentive, and calm, the staff ensures dad's needs are met, he is very comfortable, very well fed, clean, and safe. The staff's diligent attention to dad's medical needs and their communication with us and his medical providers gives us peace of mind knowing that he is in good, professional, and caring hands.

My relative has been at Avalon House for 11 and 1/2 years. As a dementia patient, she has been unable to care for herself. Her long stay there is a testament to the great care she received from Avalon and her private doctor. As her contact with Avalon I have spoken to the managers of the company and individual manager of that house many times over the years and have always been pleased with the results.

Avalon House at Laburnum Street was a godsend for my mom when her fancy assisted living community could not give her the attention she needed. The small group model was safe and calm as her dementia progressed. The house is clean, cosy, and bright. She had a spacious bedroom but spent most time in the living room with other residents (and a friendly cat!) so she was not isolated. They had excellent home cooked meals around a big table - she called it "her group". The staff are caring and patient and really know the residents; staff turnover was low so my mom saw the same people each day. The chief caregiver, [name removed], is cares for the residents with her whole heart and mind, watches their condition carefully, and advised us helpfully on challenges like hospice care. Although there was not a busy activity schedule, the family atmosphere and continuing small-group togetherness were much more important for my mom.

I am forever grateful to [name removed] and her staff at the Laburnum Street Avalon House. They cared for my elderly mother for the last 3 years of her life. She had dementia and required 24/7 care and supervision. My mom was always dressed neatly and appeared clean, well fed and comfortable whenever I visited her. The staff were friendly and the house was always warm and welcoming. I truly believe I was able to find the very best place for her and highly recommend this home.

My mother in law was a resident of Avalon until her passing from Alzheimer’s. [name removed] and the team took suck great care of her. It was always clean, the staff were lovely with mom, and we felt very grateful that they took such good care of her to the end.

I was so fortunate to find out about Avalon Homes. My mother first went to an assisted living place and did so poorly there. It was too big and too many people, basically a glorified hospital but with poor care. I think the staff was surprised how often I came by and how involved I was, because I witnessed it all. I had to get her out of there before she got hurt. Being at Avalon, my mother was in a family residence with 5 other residents, a full time caregiver and other assistants. It was calm and safe. [name removed], the full time caregiver, and I spoke every visit, about my Mom’s care and needs, and she encouraged me to visit as often as I liked. I knew my Mom was well taken care of and It was a relief. To top it off, the cost was less than assisted living and they didn’t constantly raise the cost based on my mother’s needs as the assisted living did. I tell everyone I know that has an elderly parent about Avalon Homes. I was so lucky to find them!

Mom was independent, full of life & loved a good conversation. When she started having memory issues and ultimately fell, we knew it was time to find a safe, companionable home for her. We found that place at Avalon House (AH). The caregivers at AH not only provided the care & support that mom needed, but also the independence and companionship she craved. The staff kept us informed of changes in her health & habits. When mom developed an internal infection, the caregivers notified us and her PCP immediately and supported us through the healing process. When mom eventually declined, the AH caregiving staff continued their stellar support. They communicated with us daily and even let us know when the end was near. They weren't just there for my mom, but for our entire family as we dealt with end of life events. We couldn't have asked for more sensitive and thoughtful staff. We would most definitely recommend AH for the care of your loved one!

My dad has been living at Avalon House on Oakview Drive since June 2022. The staff is very caring and very attentive to his needs, making sure he is always comfortable, wearing clean clothes and is bathed daily. The staff is always very welcoming when my mom and I visit. When my dad needs more supplies, they let me know ahead of time so I don't have to make special trip to drop off items. When the weather is nice, they take my dad out for walks or sit with him and the residents on the front porch. I know that my dad is well taken care of and happy.

Mom has been living at Avalon house for a year now. She couldn't keep living alone in her apartment. My family and I visited some of the larger senior care complexes but were concerned that it felt less personalized. We felt that an environment that felt more like a home with a larger staff to resident ratio would be best. Avalon met our expectations. We appreciate the staff at the home, especially [name removed] and [name removed], and [name removed] at the office. They are all very responsive. [name removed] and [name removed] really work as a team, cooperating with each other, quickly addressing resident needs. They are kind, patient, have a good sense of humor, and always greet people with a smile. [name removed] has always responded quickly with paperwork requests, questions, and concerns.

Our Mom has been at the Avalon house for three years now. We were lucky to get her in and so extremely happy since. The personalized care and attention to every detail in her care is simply outstanding. We are even more blessed that we have [name removed] and [name removed], who Mom adores, as Care givers. [name removed] and [name removed] have provided exceptional care to my 100 year old mom who suffers from advanced dementia. They are her surrogate daughters - always respectful, kind and attentive. I can't imagine another setting where my very talkative and insomniac mom, who is blind and nearly deaf, could have received the degree of loving support that staff provide each day and night. I moved my mother to Avalon House on Laburnum Street on [date removed] and she and I love the house. I truly believe that mom is getting the best memory care in Northern Virginia. Mom feels like she is part of a big family, loves the house, and especially loves her room. The staff takes excellent care of mom ( she receives a shower every day, her clothes are clean and matched, and the staff loves her). Mom and I are so blessed to have found mom a forever home at Avalon House on Laburnum Street.

I was not referred to Avalon Homes by A Place for Mom. I heard about their services from within a support group I routinely joined in the early stages of my bride's decline. I made contact with [name removed] and was immediately captured by the "home" atmosphere. We are now in our second year with Avalon House on Dolley Madison and could not be more pleased. [Name removed], [name removed] and [name removed] are blessed people. In a recent examination by our family physician, the doctor commented, "she is receiving excellent care." Those words even more set my mind at ease as if it was needed. This is an excellent choice over the larger and somewhat impersonal facilities that are available. Avalon is a “home”, a “community” and a loving place. And, the extraordinary staff makes it so!

The Avalon House staff and experience are absolutely amazing. They worked very, very hard to make my Mother comfortable and involved even with the struggles around COVID. They were always warm and cooperative with any requests from my Mother or the family. Their thoughts were always to the benefit of my Mother, not their own convenience. You will not find a better situation for your loved one.

Avalon has been a great place fot my mom. She is well cared for in this home setting with 8 residents. I highly recommend to any family! There are 3 staffers available at all times,. I can visit anytime. When compared to other options, Avalon is priced fairly.

My father stayed at Avalon house for multiple years and we never had a second thought as to whether this was the right place for him. The staff is outstanding and treated my father like family. They were flexible and adjusted to his unique needs. If there is an opening at Avalon, take it!
