It's a good option for active senior living.

We chose it for the location and the fact that it's an active community, so they had a younger mix of residents. They don't have any dining here because they are independent living. They have asked what else to add for activities, they have card games and a movie theatre, and parties for occaisions but that is all. It's a good option for active senior living.

The Lakeside manor was not my first choice. It was considerably cheaper than the other places that I toured, but the atmosphere was not as positive as other communities. The main entry was small and a bit gloomy, the hallways were a bit dark, and the place had the overall feel of a second rate hotel. The rooms were nice but the rest of the facility was not as appealing. I tried to change the rating to 2-1/2 stars, but it won't change.

They are very friendly and accommodating. The only downside is that the place is a little run down, and the hallways are kind of dark. It can use a few updates and improvements. Other than that everything about Lakeside Manor has been great.

Synopsis of Lakeview from a daughter's viewpoint

Very nice and attractive facility. Seems to me to have less able-bodied residents than other facilities we looked at. My mother has a wonderful apartment, but there are only 4 of these left in the building as they are being divided up into smaller 1-bedroom units. So it seems the 2-bedroom apartments are slowly disappearing, which is a major drag for someone wanting a 2-bedroom, larger place. This was by far the most expensive place we looked at, so maybe they need to divide up the units to make them more affordable. The food, in my opinion, is not as good as at a couple of the other retirement places where we ate. My mother says it is getting better; but she has had to reorder her meals 3 times (she has only been there 5 weeks) because they have run out of things (once it was mashed potatoes to go with the fried chicken dinner special--this was at 5:30, for God's sake; once it was lettuce (?!?!) when she ordered a salad; and once it was ham when she ordered a ham sandwich). I think at the price she is paying, running out of food is inexcusable---the staff can run over to Safeway if they are short on supplies! Gina is a wonderful asset in the building and very friendly. Judy, at the front desk, is sometimes friendly, sometimes not so much. Several things that we were told would be taken care of were not (ie-that Mom's garage would be cleaned up before she moved in, that the TV hookup would be moved) so it does not seem as if the facilities management is totally on top of things. I cannot comment on the activities since Mom is still doing most of her fun stuff off-site, but from the lists posted in the elevator, it looks like there are a lot of things going on for the residents to join. All in all, Mom seems very happy here, but I wish there were a few more really active residents, like she is, for her to hook up with.

Unfortunately the care of this place has gone downhill. There are multiple sidewalks with pits and cracks that a senior could fall over. The main clubhouse which was absolutely gorgeous now has chipped and dented furniture, and the floor is scratched very badly. In the garden they have not power washed the bricks, and there are missing and broken bricks in the front by their fountain. The hallways are full of dents, and patches, and the rugs are stained. The place is looking sad and old in three years and needs a face lift. The apartments themselves are good, however their appliances are not. The stove is not self cleaning. The refrigerator is the cheapest they could afford. The layout of the apartments are very good, and there is a lot of social activity which is the saving grace. Apartments are very pricey, and for what is being paid here they need to take more pride in the appearance.

A nice facility with a dining problem

My parents are not that happy at Mountain Lake Estates. The apartment is nice and it is large. The facility is well-maintained and attractive. The activities are okay, rather limited in my view. Unfortunately my parents don't participate in many of them. The cleaning service in their room is not to my standards; mold in the bathroom that isn't addressed, no dusting at all, etc. My parents biggest complaint is the food and dining service. The facility doesn't seem able to hire or keep quality servers who pay attention. Sometimes they air for 20 minutes before a server shows up. Food comes haphazardly. Sometimes one or the other doesn't even get their meal and the server says they didn't order. The "cook" is not a chef and doesn't seem to have a stable of recipes he is confident in. They hate the food and complain about it constantly. The chef cannot make an over easy egg, everything is cold, the soup is watery, etc. When they require food in their room (they have to go down and get it themselves and are not allowed to do so until after the meal hours) invariably their orders are wrong and they do not get what they want or get all that they ordered. I would assign Mountain Lake Estates 3 stars.

Great community

The community of people is what my parents love the most. They also do love their apartment.. nicely updated, spacious. The value is the most difficult to defend, especially when the food is so poor, the activities are rare or uninteresting, and then rent increases randomly (+$[removed]??) even when the kitchen staff is let go (one example).

Expensive for what you get. Would not recommend

When my mom first moved to Lakeview a year ago, she was mostly happy with the community. About a month after she moved in, the property changed ownership, several staff members left, and things changed. I think she sometimes wishes she had chosen a different community, but cannot afford to move at this point. although they offer transportation to appointments and the grocery store, they don't have enough room to accommodate everyone. My mom has never been able to get a spot on the small van for the grocery store. Also, the residents are very cliquish when it comes to seating in the dining room.

Review for Lakeside Manor

The carpets in the hallway really need to be redone, very old and dirty. Sometimes there's a bad stench coming in the hallways too. The staff was very friendly. For what they charge they should at least include cable TV, can't even get local channels.

Great start, but staffing changes hurt

At first it was great. Good food good help. But they sold and changed staff. The food quality went down and we were told the weekly housekeeping would only be every 2 weeks. This is not what we agreed to so I am taking my mom out of this facility. Would not recommend

Pros and cons

Pros: They are good at conducting meaningful activities for the seniors. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Cons: They are extremely difficult to contact via phone and email. It may takes days for someone to return a call or they may never return the call. It takes a long time for the seniors to get something fixed in the apartment.
