Dog and Pony Show.

The tour went good they all smiled but come to find out it was just a dog and pony show. When we went to move in mom they had a major OSHA violation, there was no power in her room. They had to run an extension cord into her room just so she could at least watch the television. My mom uses a walker and is at risk of being a tripping hazard and she was forced to have to maneuver around the cord in hopes of not falling. It’s obvious that they treat the patents in the memory care ward differently than the other residents. I fear that mom is being treated differently when I’m not their. I was moving to move mom out but they talked me into keeping her their. I constantly visit at all different times of day just to check up on here. They never have any activities for the memory care patients all they can do is sit around and watch television all day. They said that they had a nurse on staff 24\7 come to find out after five there is no nurse, and the nurses are sweet but the CNA’s are bad. Mom had a bad fall and ended up having to go the emergency room. I had to stay a couple of nights with her just to make sure that she would be ok. I have M.S that’s acting up due to how exasperated I have gotten due to having to deal with “Homewood.” I’m looking for another place for mom as we speak. One star was generous of me.

Looks a lot better than it really is.

If the individual needs specific care and more assistance than normal, it's not the place for them. The administrative staff and care staff were terrible, although there were some people there trying to do the best they could. The food was acceptable. But overall it looks better than it really is.

Horrible experience

They should have never taken him in, he fell 4 times while he was here for 11 days. He was in the hospital 3 different times. They were not able to handle him at all and it was a horrible experience. It is a wonderful facility only if your loved one is not a fall risk. They care more about the money than the resident.

Well, in general it’s OK. However, they can’t ever seem to get the billing right. They don’t clean the room like it should be cleaned every week. They are shorthanded at times and can’t get to my mom until way after she calls for them. They sent my mom to the hospital one time in an ambulance With no good real reason. They didn’t treat a rash that my mom had. They are not real good at attending to medical needs. On the positive side, the residents seem to be nice and friendly.

CANNOT RECCOMMEND

My dad has resided in Barathaven for nearly 2 and a half years. During this time, I can say that many caregivers and nurses took as good of care as they could based on high turnover and constant understaffing. High turnover and understaffing falls solely on the Administration. My interactions with the care staff has always been positive, and keeping my dad’s care as a top priority up until this week. This week, I had the misfortune of meeting with [name removed], LPN. Unfortunately, the winter/spring illness swept through the facility and my father came down with a fever and pneumonia. Because of his age, it took some time but he was finally eating. I live out of state but was getting daily updates from my brother and also spent over 6 hours with him at Barathaven on the weekend of [date removed]. I saw him eat an entire plate of eggs and sausage with no help swallowing fine and regaining his appetite. He also drank a 8 oz beverage in it’s entirety. He was joking and laughing this weekend. However he was still weak from days in bed. Unfortunately, on [date removed], he fell getting up from a chair at lunch and had to have an hip replacement. He returned to Barathaven on [date removed]. Because Barathaven is not a skilled care facility, has only LPN and not RN staff, he could not return with his feeding tube. I drove in over 400 miles from out of state to visit. I was not understanding his wife’s decision to not place him into an interim facility where he could still have an IV and feeding tube until he regained strength, could rehab, and regained his appetite for solid food. I know my dad has always hated going under anesthesia because he states if affects him for days. This would have been exasperated because of his weakened state. I entered his room to find my sister already pleading with his wife to give him a chance and pleading with my mother to try to let him eat/drink. I probably should not have entered but it is hard not to after a seven and a half hour drive. [Name removed] did not allow my sister to continue to speak to my mother. It was an emotionally charged situation between family members. Although I got my mom to calm down after [name removed] and a third sister left the room, and the situation was de-escalated...[name removed] kept inserting herself into a family matter and speaking on items that she should not have. In this matter, [name removed] did not remain neutral, and in fact was more of a pot stirrer than anything. [Name removed] could not put her ego and meddling ways aside. I literally would be making a plea to give my dad a chance to recover and [name removed] would yell from the door that my dad can not leave Barathaven “he is not going anywhere”. THAT is plain crazy. He literally was just transported to Barathaven the day before. He could just as easily be transported to an interim skilled care facility where he could have the IV and feeding tube. It is not [name removed]’s place to interject. Every time my dad would start to become lucid, instead of allowing him to communicate....[Name removed] would encourage more sedation and Morphine. [Name removed] told me that my dad had not been lucid the entire time he had been in Barathaven. That is plain false. My dad regularly joked with me and the staff. Come to find out...[Name removed] had only worked there since [date removed]. Two weeks...and my dad had been recovering from pneumonia before he broke his hip. Barathaven failed my father by providing him the most heartless LPN who meddles in family matters and does not have any people skills. It is so sad that during my dad’s final days....the staff at Barathaven (Nurse [name removed]) is more for euthanasia than trying to get a resident to recover.

Nasty staff

My first experience was seeing the director [name removed] whom I had to make greet me. She seems to be a little racist because she greeted the Caucasians with no problem. As we entered the dining area [name removed] went directly to the serving area and preceded to go in the pots and take food out without washing her hands. I wouldn't dare have my mother stay here because of this woman actions and disrespectful. The place is very nice but the staff are scary especially the upper staff.

Too much cosmetic not enough quality

Family member has come down with scabies/lice, mistreated, never diagnosed correctly or overly concerned. Some employees doze off, especially at night, while residents sit staring.

Blindsided

Extremely argumentative when confronted about care or anything for that matter. The mind is not stimulated, everyone sits and intimidated by so many accents and demeanor, only one American works in Cumming location, once in door , you lose control.

Serenades

During my father's time at this facility, he had scabies twice . He also developed a MRSA infection that was the size of a grapefruit before I was notified or treatment was initiated. His fingernails grew so long he scratched himself until he was bleeding several times. I received several calls from the facility where the person calling me did not know my father and told me they were calling regarding my mother. My father has been at another facility for several weeks now and is doing much better.

Inappropriate action

I was going to add to my previous review, but apparently you have to sign up to read all of the comments...another red flag in my book. Anyway, my MIL has been out of there for at least a month. She received a check from the federal government which had been opened by the facility and then put in an envelope with their return address and nothing else but the check in the envelope. Not sure why they felt if was appropriate to open her mail but that is [Removed].

Be Informed. Don't let your parent be [Removed]

My mother has been a resident at this facility and finally after multiple issues we are moving her to a safe environment. First, you need to know that being in Pavilion assisted care does not mean that your loved one will be checked on, regularly. My mother laid on the floor all night until 11:00 am the next morning without any staff checking into her room. She was non-responsive and taken by EMS to the hospital. The best I can tell the staff ratio is 1:15-20 residents. They are always willing to up your care for a fee but good luck seeing the difference. As an RN in Quality Mgmt., I earnestly advise you to be very careful with any Assisted Care that promises the moon. [Removed] is a real problem at Pavilion. Check out private homes as an alternative, but be mindful that you will still have to be very involved with your parents to ensure their safety and care. An excellent resource for help and complaints is the state agency

Complete Lack of Security

My parents had an unwanted guest forcibly staying with them for 2 months and the staff did not notice! That is unacceptable. Apparently they don't have security cameras which is also alarming. I called repeatedly to ensure that situation was taken care and no call back. DO NOT PUT your loved ones in this facility. It's terrible and we will be looking elsewhere to house my parents.
