My parents lived here..

My parents lived in Atria's assisted living for almost 2 years. They moved in very early when there were fewer residents & as more moved in, rules changed (like they had to stop eating dinner in the independent dining room). This Atria is beautiful & has a resort feel to it. The poorest part of the design though is separating the independent & assisted living residents so much. They eat in their own dining rooms sadly. The independent dining room is large, bright and beautiful. The assisted living dining room is narrow, long, less decorative. Most events take place closer to the independent (the theater, the shows, the salon, the card rooms) which makes things a bit more difficult for the assisted living residents. If you are independent you have more of a chance to enjoy living here. The food was a terrible problem for a long time. When first moved in, the menu included filet mignon, shrimp & salmon. Soon after those everyday options were stopped. A new executive chef was hired but same issues continued. Poor cooking, poor quality, long waiting time. I was there many times visiting & saw residents give up waiting & leave. Hate to bash all, Some staff were wonderful. But so overworked, the staff couldn't keep up. Assisted living residents are more high maintance but this is the industry. I think they could've done better. Whenever I complained I was told they were hiring/training new people & things would improve. But they never did. They also closed the bistro. I had complained because this was an important feature for assisted living residents to be able to go & get a snack. A big feature in my opinion which they were paying for in their monthly dues. Instead, their rent went up! My parents were extremely unhappy so they finally agreed to move out of state (to be close to me). I do want to say that both my parents had their challenges. Both had medical conditions but I expected them to be helped & encouraged while they lived there. The only real activities available to them on the assisted living side was poker twice a week which my dad did participate. And they also had a lot of art going on. I would've liked to have seen more group activities like bingo, trivia, etc. Things to help them socialize. Now, they live in a place that has that so it really stands out to me know how different the places are to each other. If you are thinking of living here- do a test run for a few weeks!! Try it out first without committing!! Take note that many reviews on other sites are written from employees- this to me is not a good source of information. Read through to understand which is which.

Family relative of resident

In the year that this place has been opened - there exist lack of consistent communication (Fire drills), food presentation is unappealing and often untasty- not farm to table concept as marketed, much of the nursing staff members are hard to understand the turn over rate is appalling high, activities were scheduled outdoor and in 90+ degree and no cared to cancel event - so resident went out and waited. outdoor groups come in to hold singing events - in the lobby area, where the reception desk is and one can't hear others (doesn't HC have other rooms for such events), Director is more focused on looks/appearance that does not care of residents well being or being truthful to them

Decline in Quality

The staff is kind but overwhelmed in the memory care unit - the Arbor model does not permit hiring of more staff, so the residents get short changed by having to wait for assistance with feeding, dressing, etc. Many of these tasks end up being done by family members when they are visiting. Clothing often goes missing, as do linens and towels, even it they are labeled with the resident's name. Arbor also advertises as an "age in place" facility, meaning residents can stay until they pass away. However, be warned that if administration determines your loved one requires too much care, you can receive 30 days notice that you must move them elsewhere. Administration has changed in the last 18 months, which has led to a lot of changeover in staff - it is not the quality place it once was. I would not recommend Arbor Terrace at Crabapple.

Questionalbe Quality

Initially we were very pleased with the services, but over the last few months there have been many changes. It does not seem as though they can keep employees there. The nursing administrator job has changed people more often then I can count. We were told all food was prepared in-house and from fresh ingredients, some of the worst tasting food ever. Even after 2 different chefs (I question the chef's certification), food is bland and mostly equivalent to a tv dinner. The service in the dinning room is beyond poor. Why does it take 30 minutes to be served?

Uncommunicative during sales process

I felt like they could have been much more communicative and informative during the touring and sales process. If you don't ask questions they won't give you important information, and when it was time to sign the papers I felt like there were a lot of surprise fees that they hadn't mentioned at all until that point. I think it all comes down to the training of their sales staff.

Not What We Were Sold On

Our loved one was put in memory care at the last minute. She was being discharged from rehab and we didn't have time to change where she was going. It was a disaster... she didn't belong there. She couldn't make any meaningful friendships, participate in all the activities that we were sold on, or have a choice about her meals. She was lonely and felt unsafe with the unpredictable nature of the other residents. When we asked for a reassessment after a few weeks (at the urging of our visiting nurse, PT, and even some of the staff), we were met with opposition from the head nurse and administrators who did not take the time to get to know her. After we said we would move her, they said they would consider putting her in the Bridges unit. Our loved one just wanted out at that point... she didn't trust them. We moved her to another facility where she is very happy and independent in assisted living.

suitability is more than just amenities and a nice room...

To be fair, the scores will be for the memory care section which is very different from the rest of the facility. Mom was more cognitively aware and highly functioning than anyone else in memory care and she wasn't able to participate in the assisted living activities or go over that side of the facility which is much larger and nicer . It didn't end up being a good fit for her. I think to make sure you look at the residents and observe the staff interactions with the residents as much as the facility itself or the accommodations. A lot of sales people are good at their jobs and can make it look like the lovely looking facilities and the amenities are the most important part.

I cannot recommend.

Arbor Terrace is a beautiful place but I cannot recommend it. It is very expensive. The care is lacking because of small staff. My wife was expelled for trying to get out. We were told she had to leave and while my wife had covid. So I had to move her to the Hospital until we found another facility. I was never comfortable with this place. They required that I hire extra person just to watch her.

Ineffective Administration/staff and Poor Food quality.

The food quality has dropped tremendously in the past few months. It's rarely edible. The administration is not trustworthy. Incorrect billing and assessments done on my mom without my knowledge. Staff lost paperwork including financial information for a while..finally found it. Some staff extremely nice others can't be trusted.

Beyond their abilities

Our stay here was short lived unfortunately. Mom moved in with the explanation that she would be a fall risk. Of course we were told this was not a problem. She had several falls inc one while the only staff was washing dishes instead of monitoring. After approximately a month it was strongly suggested (with the hint of or else) to me that it would be a very smart idea to hire a private duty sitter for mom. 8 hrs a day every day should be enough. Someone to sit next to her and remind her not to reach or try to get up. A bargin at only $[fee removed] dollars an hour out of pocket on top of the high fees already required for her stay. The true issue is that there really wasn't a whole lot of active programing. Everytime I visited all the residents were all parked in front of the television like zombies. Mom was bored and so kept attempting to find something to do and in doing so would fall. Everyone was nice but I wish they were honest from the start that this was more than they could handle.

Food problems

The food is way too salty and they won't do anything about it. The run out of food all the time, too. The same issues come up every month at the resident council meeting. Some aides are very good, some are not. Don't be fooled by how nice things look.

Highly Recommend

The dining room is the biggest issue. They use way too much salt. They don't work with any special diets . I highly recommend Arbor Terrace, but the dining just needs to be more flexible to accommodate special needs that seniors often have. It's a super nice place, and extremely safe. That was a high priority for me given the locations of many other facilities in the area.

Not recommended for dementia patients with challenging behaviors.

Many of the staff were friendly, but my mother is definitely a more difficult person with dementia to deal with and some staff seemed afraid of her and others seemed to almost antagonize her. They didn't seem familiar with dealing with behaviors common to many dementia patients. When my mother would try to take a phone to call 911 to complain that people were stealing her things, staff would try to grab the phone from her and tell her that she couldn't use the phone. In her new place, this happened one time, they asked my mother why she wanted to use the phone and when she said that someone stole her things, the staff member sympathized with my mother and said I will take care of that for you. You need to sit down and relax and let me handle it. I'll get you a cup of coffee. My mother must have felt heard because she calmed down and then forgot all about it. I've watched them distract and redirect others in my mother's community. I think Arbor Terrace is a good place for people that only exhibit mild behaviors with their dementia. To be fair, you should know that my mother ended up hitting an aide with a cane when she was told she couldn't use the phone. The police were called and they took my mother to emergency. She then went to a geriatric psychiatric facility. I was called by Arbor Terrace almost daily by the staff asking me to come to either calm my mother down or help the med tech give my mother her medication. Arbor Terrace is more expensive than [community removed] I have only been called twice from the [community removed]. Once because my mother fell, and then again when another patient hit my mother. Their staff treat the people in memory care with respect.

Do not recommend

They really need better trained aids and to improve on the current nursing staff. They also could use a better chef and menu choices. More activities would be nice involving lectures, or making different hand crafted things. Based off of the experience, I would no recommend The Solana Doylestown to others at this time.

Review for The Preserve at Palm-Aire

I absolutely would not recommend to others. 1. My biggest concern is they constantly have multiple elevators out at a time. This is a safety issue that is very concerning. 2. The restaurant food is horrible, since she moved in the meal quality has deteriorated and the portions have gone down significantly. 3. There is no control over their staff of who has keys to the residents apartments and that is very concerning. 4. They have had to close the restaurant on more than one occasion because did not pass health inspections. 5. I have on many occasions walked through the front door in the evenings without registering when there was no one at the front desk or even when there was, they never asked who I was or why I was just walking in. That is concerning that anyone can just walk in and head to the apartments. 6. Based on the contract there are designated smoking areas, however management has allowed one specific resident to smoke in her apartment, which is against policy and a safety concern. Management has told the residence on the floor for months they were going to do something about it, but the lady still continues to smoke like a chimney, the halls real of smoke, there are people that have health issues that this is impacting, yet it is still allowed. 8. The doggie park is a hazard, they now it about every two weeks and is full of mud and uneven which is unsafe. 9. At the residence monthly meetings the above issues get brought up every month and the management does nothing.
