Just not the right fit

If you put your relatives here, they need to be able to completely function on their own. They tested my loved one and said she would do great here. And she just ended up needing way too much help. So it wasn't a good fit for her. Another family member and I ended up going up there several days a week to care for her, and then we brought in hospice. She wasn't getting bathed, and she wasn't eating. They would come and set her tray down and then pick it up when she didn't eat. If they didn't set it near her, she couldn't eat. Looking back, she should have been in a nursing home instead of here. The people are nice. It was clean. It just wasn't a good fit for our loved one.

Plan ahead

We chose this facility mostly because of the value for the money and I liked the memory care unit. I am pleased with the care that she is receiving here. I do think that the quality of food as well as the quantity seems to have gone down since when she first moved in here. I would tell others that Villa Court does not take medicaid which is important to know. I would recommend that others look at different communities and talk to people who have loved ones there to get the real feel.

Information good to know

We were here before for about a year so we were familiar with Canyon Creek Memory Care. The affordability was in the ballpark of what we were looking for as well so that is why we chose it. The facility overall needs to be update, they do have a lot of old furniture and carpet. The rooms themselves are fine, but more so the common areas. The food is also something they could use improvement on. I would recommend if you still have the time to monitor your loved ones.

We had an 11 am appt. [Name removed] had to leave and the secretary took us to see 1 room. They seated us for lunch before 11:30 am. The food was ok. There was almost a fight in the dining room. I had to tell a staff member because no one noticed. Then, one of the directors sat with us and showed us 2 more apartments. That was after 1:30 pm. They were too busy to keep their appt. I asked several residents how their care and the food was. They all answered the same....”It’s ok”. It definitely didn’t feel like a good match for my parents. The residents their did not look happy either. The hallways were too long for my parents to walk. The rooms were a decent size but not immaculate.

Somewhere in the meh range for us

My Mom actually did not enjoy living here. She only stayed a couple of months. Most of the staff were wonderful and friendly and they worked really hard to meet everyone's needs. It was sometimes hard to get timely service, so perhaps they're a little understaffed. I loved that they had a call button that the residents can push for anything they need, but there is no way to distinguish a minor need from a major one except for the pull-cord in the bathroom, so I think it's hard for staff to know who needs help immediately and who can wait a while. One hall perpetually smells like urine, and when we asked about it during our tour she brushed it off as a one-time event. But it smelled like urine almost every time I went there. Almost all the residents I met were sweet and friendly, but there was one lady who was very rude to my mother and kind of ruined her experience. It just made her feel like she didn't belong there. Perhaps there is a little bit of a clique? They were all really nice to me though, so maybe it was just my mom. They have a TON of activities planned, and I think the staff has tried really hard to make them varied and meet lots of interests, but for some reason most of the activities (at least on the assisted living side) are not very well attended. Assisted living side residents are able to attend activities on the independent living side, but there may not be anyone available to help them get back to their rooms if they need it. In retrospect, perhaps a place that did not segregate assisted living from independent living would have been a better match for my Mom's needs. My feeling is that the independent activities are probably better attended. We loved that there are lots of spaces families can reserve to have family get-togethers, including a kitchen area. They can also use the pool area, but need to have their resident family-member with them of course. I liked that they come check on my mom every few hours, but she felt like her privacy was invaded because EVERYONE had a key to her apartment. It kind of goes along with the territory, but it's something to think about. I love that they have a beautiful chapel on-site and have church services for many different denominations on Sunday. The maintenance guys were pretty quick to attend to emergencies, like a broken toilet or a leaky faucet, but did not get around to minor repairs. My mom thought the food was great, I thought it was just okay. Very expensive for non-residents though. Overall, our experience there was okay. I would have liked her to give it more of a chance, but she was not happy there so we made other arrangements.

Disappointing and could be better

My dad was left on a toilet for a half hour. He decided to get up and go back to bed without help and fell. That should not happen. Hire enough help to cover the capacity of the facility. Most of the nurses are too busy to help as well. There is only one that makes the visits there worth it and she can’t be there all the time. The aides try their best but there are just not enough of them when there are three of them and 6-7 lights go off at any given time.

I toured on a Saturday when there wasn't a lot of reception staff available to help me, so I had to wait a while. Once I was helped, the woman was very friendly. The studio room seemed a little smaller than other facilities I had toured. There wasn't a lot of parking for visitors though, and on a weekend near the Mission Inn in Riverside, there is almost always some event going on, so there wasn't a lot of street parking either. It seemed a little too accessible to me from the street, and not enough private walking area outside for seniors who might be more mobile. It would probably be best for seniors who by nature of their health were naturally more confined to indoors.

Nice facility. Did not meet some of the needs required by my mother-in-law. Had some concern with staff being shared between both buildings at times.

While we cannot pinpoint our disappointment, we feel it is not the place for our aunt. It felt less like 'home' and more like a seniorfacility
