The value for the money does not add up!

If your loved one needs memory care look else especially if they are diabetic. My dad had one of four meals everyday, which always included peas and the meals were cold. My dad's blood sugar was still not under control. Discussed this with management several times but to fall on deaf ears. In the memory unit, the ratio was basically 3 wo 15 during the day and 1at night. The staff was very friendly but dad and others did have several falls. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Our family's experience

When it was Brookdale the experience was pretty great, 5, across the board. Some small things, like we had a roach in my mother in laws apartment, but they dealt with it quickly. Otherwise the support was great, the food was great, the activities were great. Since it was sold the experience has been about a 2. The menu options have become much more limited, the services too. They only recently fixed their bus so for a long time they didn't have reliable transportation. From what I understand many residents moved out. Things have tended up since then a bit so hoping it improves but TBD.

Stay hands on

The staff is pretty good. She has a couple of them that she recognizes even. There was an incident with one of the men in her memory care smacking her with a shoe across the side of her face. It was reported to police -I was told such but I haven't seen a report- and that patient has been removed. She wasn't hurt, not even bruised, and had been checked over by EMI was lead to believe they had someone to bill mom's longterm facility insurance, and didn't find out until October that want the case, and I had to file, which I would have if someone had just told me.

Nice staff, unhelpful stay

Mom was there for a little extra help after a fall. Studio room was nicely redone but incredibly small. There was only room for a single bed and an arm chair. Nowhere comfortable to sit. Mom ended sitting in a wheelchair all day and being pushed everywhere. She was not using a chair before and I really felt this was not helping her get stronger at all. Staff was very nice and helpful but the sales pitch to move her there permanently got a little strong and very taxing at the end.

Lack of transition services for new residents - even under extraordinary circumstances

The place had bad water damage from storms - after 2 weeks my mom's roof leaked causing damage to the walls and ceilings and requiring her to temporarily be moved to another, much worse unit with no natural light. This also mean she lost access to her Cabke tv, etc and that we had to move all her stuff and set up her unit multiple times. The lack of light and lack of TV made her fall into a deep depression - she refused to shower (because she couldn't figure out how to use the shower on her own). This lead to her having a severe uti which turned septic. She lost consciousness - was hospitalized and suffered severe mental deterioration - we had to move her to a board and care facility approximately 6 weeks after she first moved into Brookdale. She lived an additional 4 months but never received mental function and needed care for all daily living activities. We wound up being charged 14K for 6 weeks because they made up give notice and did not refund much of the community fees. While the situation with the leak was not necessarily their fault, they were not very helpful - giving us inaccurate estimates of when she could move back to her initial room etc. I will say the staff was very friendly and the activities were good - what they lacked was more personalized transition services (especially in light of the extraordinary circumstances).

Would not recommend

I was very disappointed that I chose Windchime for my brother. He was only there for six weeks before he died, but it was not a good experience for him. The staff treated him like a child, walked right into his room, no privacy. He was there for strictly medical reasons, but they still treated him as if he had dementia. They talked about all the plans they had for the future for the facility when I toured it. There were very few activities, no barber, nothing to do. The food was awful, very bland and very few choices other than a turkey sandwich if he missed a meal due to his dialysis. No effort to make him feel welcome.

Disappointed

The facility is clean and nice. I like the size of it for my brother because has a wheelchair. The patio is beautiful and he enjoys sitting out there. The garden area is absolutely beautiful. I really like that it is a smaller facility and easier to get around. The main problem that we are having right now is that he cannot fit in the restroom in his room with the wheelchair. They are not handicap accessible. Because of that, he has to pay to use the restroom because he cannot walk in by himself and needs help. It is a big issue financially.

Very Disappointed

We took our loved one out after [time frame removed]. They are understaffed and do not take care of the residents very well. Some of the staff were good, and some were terrible. When you talk to them, you can't get answers. That was one of our big problems. There were no activities. They didn't have a laundry lady there, and our loved one ended up with hardly any clothes - they were missing and/or dirty. It was not at all like when we first went.

Horrible director ruined a good place

Rooms are okay. Nurses are good. The rest of the care is spotty. No one helped my mother brush her teeth and spills could stay around for a day before they were cleaned up. My mother was supposed to get a supplement with each meal, but if I didn't ask for it, she didn't get it. The food was atrocious, big ugly piles of unidentifiable meat and mashed potatoes with yellow gravy. When I complained about the food, the dietician said she "stands by the five star reviews" they've gotten. That's one of the reasons I'm writing this review. The main problem is the director. He was defensive and mean when comments and questions were raised about my mother's care. When I raised concerns, he never answered but kept calling me Ma'am and said we needed to get on the same page. He told me I wasn't a nurse and shouldn't be giving my opinions. (My mom was dehydrated and I asked that she get fluids.) He told me I was in danger of losing my visiting privileges.

My review of Brookdale Chatsworth

Our loved one lived here before moving to another facility, and our experience just went down hill. The location was not convenient for our family, our loved one did not have great views to look at outside of the apartment and we would not recommend them to others.

Memory Care rooms are generously sized. Lots of storage space. Built-in bathroom handrails and shower bench. Nice outdoor areas. Opened April 2021, so building is in perfect condition (as of May 2021.) Appears and smells clean. Close to hospitals.

When my loved one and I first arrived at the community there was no one available to give us a tour, we had to wait almost an hour for help. During our visit I was not impressed, I noticed there was residents smoking everywhere outside and the building was not well maintained. It was not a good fit for my dad .

Keep Looking

This place used to be much better when it was Emeritus. It has gone down hill since Brookdale took over. My father states the food is not even eatable anymore and pretty much just eats something in his room. They even fired the BEST life enrichment person they could ever hire! Change is not always better! I feel sorry for those who are stuck there because family won't move them to better care. Time to move on!

Independent living looked great, but the assisted living wasn't a fit. Mom isn't that far gone, I don't think she would fit in with that crowd. I also didn't like that they check on everyone every two hours, that would drive her batty!

Looked good at first???

When my daughter and I arrived at Emeritus for our 1st visit, we were greeted by very friendly staff. The room that we met was very nicely decorated. However, when my father stayed there for respite care we discovered rooms that need to be updated. My father was not happy with the care or the food. The mattress that he slept on had urine stains, and the bathroom was in need of an update. The cable TV did not work I had to go get the cable service installed myself.

Just Don't...

From 2014 to 2016 I had two family members at Brookdale Roslyn, (originally Emeritus) both in Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing. One ended in a tragic and suspicious death and another in unnecessary eviction (which, curiously, turned out to be the best thing that has transpired through the ongoing months of turmoil and grief dealing with the facility and the Corporation.). Beware, and consider that they are a huge, nationwide, for-profit entity and, to truly have your loved one cared for properly, please, look to a different formula than what Brookdale Senior Living offers.
