Dementia care unit not in compliance

Hoping to move mother into dementia unit when she needed extra help. But they could not take her because of compliance issues. She lived in assisted living for several years and we were told moving her to dementia unit would not be issue. After learning about compliance issues I would not have kept her there anyway. Very disappointing. False advertising / unethical marketing practices if you ask me.

Looks are deceiving.

My father's room was a pig stye the day we moved in. We cleaned it for over 8 hours, and it was never cleaned again. It had a big problem with ants and flies. I had to put my father's clothes out in the hallway to get them washed. He was not bathed until Hospice got on board. The rates went up every 2 months. I had a nurse try to pressure me into having my father move to memory care, saying that my father needed more care, which is more expensive. My father wasn't getting any care. My father didn't want to wear the call button because no one would answer it. He had better luck leaving his door open to and wheel his wheelchair to find someone. My father was sane enough to figure out that wearing the button didn't work, and yet they were pushing for him to be moved to memory care??? The food was ok, but it was rare that there was butter, salt, pepper, sugar, cream, or condiments. Silverware and coffee cups were always short in supply. The office staff always had their heads on the computer screen and had no time to actually talk about my father's care. The aids that cared were overworked, and the aids that didn't care were on Facebook or texting. I visited my dad every day as I knew he was not being cared for.

Poor administration

The administration at Heritage Muskego does not respond to family concerns, does not staff well and is seldom available for promised care meetings. Although some of the daily staff are caring most do little to engage the residents, activities are minimal and child like - they are not treated like adults. Many of the staff are third party “caregivers “ not Heritage employees. If your parent needs additional help this is NOT the place for them.

Avoid at all cost

This is a terrible institution. First of all the managing Director is never available to speak with a family member of a resident and she never returns phone calls nor provides access to requested documents. The staff is never around and according to my family member who is a resident they hide in empty rooms so they do not have to work or be available to help a resident with their needs. On a recent visit a family friend and my loved one listened to a resident call out for help for a considerable indecent amount of time before anybody showed up. During that same visit they observed two female residents shouting at one another concerning a "room altercation". Again no one showed up for quite awhile.

Not pleased with the care at Heritage

I would want others to know when looking into Heritage of Muskego that my dad had Parkinson's and he needed a lot of care. A lot of times we found that they pushed him off into a corner because they thought he was disrupting other residents. We were not happy with the care we received here, I do not think they were doing the things they needed to do or monitoring him as they should have been. He needed feedings and I had to get staff to help him and I had to give them suggestions, we felt like we were doing all the work. We are very disappointed and they are not what they said they were going to be. They do not have experience with Parkinson's disease. They did not treat residents like human beings.

You're Out when your Money Runs Out

Pretty is as pretty does, so no matter how pretty the property, consider the integrity of the owner and executive director. They have a right to their terms, but not to lie about them or change them later. Our 87-year-old friend was told that if she private-paid 6 months, Heritage would keep her when she went on Medicaid. The promise was oral, made by former executive director and witnessed by current sales director. They don't dispute the promise was made, but, as Milo Pinkerton, owner, says: "A promise is not a promise unless it is written." Our friend is evicted after spending her life savings at Heritage.Their promises are as bogus as their slogan: "We treat residents like family; trust us with your loved one."

I was scheduled to take a toured here for my loved one, but when I arrived, they did not seem to be expecting me. I spoke with the front desk girls and was asked to take a seat. after that, I sat for more than 15 minutes before anyone spoke to me. I felt like I was being ignored or that my time was not important. I didn't feel; that the staff was competent either. If they could not take care of me well, How could they take care of my loved one?

My father's Care

I was not happy with the care that my father received here. My father did not get the attention here from this community. I do not feel that they gave him the good care and he was not there long. They were not giving him the medications that he required. My father was not here long. They did not have caregivers at night for any care. We would not recommend this community for care. I did see some of the caretakers sleeping in the break room

Awful Experience!!

My dad was only in this community for a short period of time but it was the worse experience and I am very disappointed in the quality of care he received. First of all they should never consider themselves a memory care unit because they did not do one thing that there where supposed to do to help him out. The staff never documented anything or kept any kind of record of what my father had eaten or any of his showers and bathroom visits. Also my wife on two occasions had gone into my fathers room to visit him and had found pills just laying on the floor. When she had asked the staff member what that was from or what the medication was she could not answer that question. My dads teeth also rarely where brushed and he often woke up from his sleep soak and wet because of the lack of bathroom help they provided. Overall my dads experience was awful and I would never recommend this place

My family and I were extremely unhappy...

My dad was the resident at Heritage Memory Care. Five stars for activities --David, the activities director, was warm, compassionate, and very friendly. Friendliness - 3 stars. We became very close to some of the caregivers, but once we became concerned about their lack of care, we felt we were getting the cold shoulder. Cleanliness - 2 stars. My dad wasn't clean, but the building was. My dad's room was cleaned occasionally but never very well. The other categories = 1 star My family and I were extremely unhappy with the care my dad received at Heritage (Middleton, WI) Memory Care. His belongings were lost routinely, including his glasses, his hearing aides, and his teeth. We are now in the process of replacing his very expensive bottom dentures for the second time. His face and clothes were usually dirty with food, his head became scabby because it wasn't washed well, and he was often wet. He fell often, and we witnessed his alarm going off but no one coming to attend to him. I think most of the caregivers at Heritage meant well, but they aren't CNA trained, and some weren't very reliable. One time we asked two different aides to call the nurse because my dad's catheter wasn't working right. They both promised me they would call that evening. Neither one followed through, and my dad came down with a terrible infection as a result. We also asked that my dad receive some TLC after he had some teeth pulled. Nobody offered him saltwater rinses, aspirins, etc. They didn't do anything for him. The memory care unit went through five different nurses while we were there. If a nurse had been available when my dad fell and gouged his elbow, maybe he wouldn't have had an infection in that elbow for the next three months. We finally moved my dad to Sebring at Coventry Village and are very happy. He's clean and up and about with his walker (at Heritage he had been reduced to using a wheelchair). He rarely falls anymore. He's safe and well-cared for.

My brother in law was there in Enhanced assisted living and all I can say is DON'T but your loved here. The director of nursing was very rude. He would ring because he needed to be changed, they'd come in turn off his necklace that would let them know he needed something and then say they had to get someone to help. Hed sit in his dirty diaper for 20 minutes. If it was almost lunch he'd have to wait till after lunch. They are very short staffed. He ended up with a bedsore!!! This place was a nightmare. I could go on and on how bad it was. Please dont put your loved one here.

Are you sure?

I would be remiss if I did not warn others about this “assisted care” facility. Be warned it is beautiful, rooms well maintained, eating areas are open, and it is easy to envision the one that you love living there. I get it when your parents or significant other is at that stage where assisted living is the only option all you want is a place that you can trust and is beautiful. However, if you are considering this facility again be warned. Money does not buy good care when the facility mismanaged. Check out this little gem about the facility that you are considering – news. We had great plans for my Dad when he moved in after rehab. It is true that we did not know that he was very close to death. It is true that the clothes my Dad wore on Easter Sunday were still on him and soaked straight through on that following Monday, found by my Mom. It is true that I had no words of comfort for my Mom, except this facility is [language removed] and it is true that after my father had passed this facility was going to charge my Mom for a care bracelet that was only used at their facility, they had apparently forgotten to remove it in their rush to ship out my Dad’s body. Are there good caregivers there? Possibly but the negative outweighs the positive. If you read the above and are still considering this facility as an option, I will pray for you and your loved one so that your experience is not the same.

Stressful experience

Facility has gone down hill over the past year. Staff shortage has led to unacceptable level of care with day to day hygiene and bathroom assistance. It would be better to have fewer scheduled “activities” and more practical care. Some staff members have been disrespectful to family and unwilling to follow medical instructions. We are currently on a waiting list at another assisted living home.
