Good overall, didn't end up working out for us

Although my loved one was here only briefly for care, from what I saw it looked like they did a good job overall. It was a nice looking community, and everyone that we worked with was friendly. The problem we ran into was that staying here would have required we switch to a physical therapist other than the one we have been using for years, and this wasn't a change we were willing to make. They are a good facility, but be sure that everything will work out for your outside care needs as well.

Christina very helpful and positive. The community was clean, appealing and carefully thought out in terms of providing memory care. Medications are dispensed individually from the med room, not from a cart in the hall. Reportedly staff turnover is low and examples of reasonably long-tenured management and lead personnel were offered. All staff receive the Alzheimer's Assoc. Care training program plus additional training within the company. The company is family owned. There was a reminiscing activity going on and those who did not seem to be participating had no one supporting them. I was told they might have been passively participating which might be accurate but some additional staff presence would have been appropriate.

Home Sweet Home

My parents needed an assisted living community after leaving a nursing rehab facility. Because they were both dealing with memory issues, and wanted to be able to stay together. I followed up with Memory Care per recommendation from the nursing home. Mom and daddy were happy there...and even though mom has since passed on it is still daddys "home sweet home"!

Magnolia Place

My husband had been in a smaller facility before he went to Magnolia. The care at the smaller place was more personal. They cannot afford the same professional services (on duty nurse and a doctor on call) but the personal care was better. Magnolia is clean and pretty and the food is good but the staff is busy and cannot provide close attention to each patient.

Stay involved

Grand Brook Memory Care, Rogers: During the month she was there many activities did not take place. The staff was often pulled to assist assigned staff (legal ration staff to patient numbers) to the other side, leaving the other half of residents without assistance. On several occasions, mainly after dinner, I needed to go look for someone to ask a question or get assistance. The food quality, at this time, was fair. On one occasion, the nurse didn't come to give night medication (after we'd talked just a couple hours earlier) and no one else could go into the locked nurses station. (No 24/7 nurse on duty). So, she missed those doses. The cleanliness was fair, as well. The staff was friendly but we chose not to have mom stay longer than the 30 day respite. Next, Village on the Park, Bentonville Memory Care: During her six month stay, our Mom received adequate care from the staff who usually were extremely attentive and had a positive attitude to care for her needs. They had a full time Activity Director just for the 18 memory care residents. They were much more consistent with providing varied and planned activities. Their communication was generally very good with the family. We also had hospice care and they followed the hospice plan. There was a nurse on the wing during the day. At night, there was a nurse on site, so reachable, but stayed on the assisted living side. The food was good quality and included many fresh fruits instead of canned fruit only. As in any facility/community, there is always the need to be your loved one's advocate.

Disappointed

I took my brother out when corporate arrived and fired a bunch of the staff. So I don't know how it is now. I hope a lot better. Staff was too slow getting back to me. Cleaning personnel wouldn't wasn't doing a good job, cleaning up rooms after the patient had an accident in their rooms. Also in the dining area when someone one had an accident, wouldn't mop up the urine until the patient got through eating. The executive was very slow to get my total amount I paid while my Brother was there. It was a total mess, so I took my brother out of that facility and took him to [location removed] where I lived. The best employee that was caring and quick to respond was a lady named [name removed[. I hope she is still there. The lady from corporate that came up there was really nice, caring, and got things done. She was professional!!

Staff: 5 We have had direct observation and communication with the staff on all shifts. We have been pleased with their positive and caring interaction not just with our family member but also with all other patients in the facility. The staff appears very calm and knowledgeable. Cleanliness: 5 The facility is spotlessly clean whenever we visit regardless of the time of day. Activities: 4 The activities are as good as they can be considering the abilities of the patients. The only issue is that they are often geared more toward female patients rather than the males. However, I personally do not know of anything that would engage men more. They have taken our family member and others on a few outings which they seem to totally enjoy. Friendliness: 5 I can not say enough about how friendly every single staff member has been toward us as well as the patients. Food: 5 We have eaten several meals at the facility with and without advanced knowledge. The food is extremely good and varied. In addition, snack and drinks are readily available and offered routinely to patients. It was with great difficulty that we as a family had to make the decision to place our family member in any facility. We visited every single facility that offered dementia care in NW Arkansas. On top of our individual concerns, I am a retired RN with extensive experience in seeing poor care from nursing homes coming into the ER. Therefore, I am extremely critical of these facilities. I have also unfortunately had two other family members in dementia units in other states....one a positive experience and one a very negative experience. I have been nothing but 100% pleased with Magnolia Place in every possible way. My father-in-law did, of course, go through a 2-3 week adjustment period where he was very unhappy and angry. However, we anticipated that even though it was difficult for us to get through. But after that adjustment period he has been very happy and engaged in activities. We also feel that the positive stimulation by the staff and other patients has actually slightly improved his mental status and definitely his attitude. We, as a family, can 100% recommend Magnolia Place to anyone looking for dementia care for their loved ones.

It’s so different in the morning and night with the staff

I was visiting my loved one last week and I primarily come in the mornings when I do come, but I decided to come in the evening because I was attending an event that morning. Long story short I was searching for somebody for over an hour. I needed assistance helping my loved ones   in the bed. I recently had surgery so I was unable to do it. I finally saw a little girl come from the one of the offices down where my loved one is so I asked her if she knew where everybody was at. She told me she would go get her mom. About 20 minutes later I was approached by a caregiver [name removed]. I told her I just needed help laying my loved one down and she told me that she will go get the caregiver that’s assigned to my loved one. It roughly took around 30 minutes when a young lady came to help. After I said my goodbye to my loved one I walked into the activity room to see if my loved ones jacket was in there because I was gonna take it home to wash…TO BE CONTINUED

Our Family's Experience

Again, this was based upon a few times visiting my mother in law-- facility was clean, nice activity rooms, entertainment... staff was friendly but sat behind their desk and not interactive with patients except to move them in and out of dining room. Otherwise they seemed to just sit patients in the entry way as you walk into building that is right by nursing station, presumably because this is easier than leaving their chairs behind the station. They don't let patients back in rooms for afternoon rest/nap or to use their own restroom. It seems like they just do whatever is easiest to "manage the herd".
