Avalon House on Gerard Court

I didn’t like the residential care home setting. There were only 8-10 clients there, and they have to share bathrooms, which I did not care for. This particular care home was really for patients with dementia, and I didn't feel my loved one would get the stimulation she needed there. We were there on a Saturday, and they said they would be serving soup and crackers for dinner, which took me aback. It just was not the right fit at all and would have been very hard on my mom.

Even now with lesser Covid restrictions at other communities, I am not allowed to go inside to visit my loved one. They make me stand outside in the cold and talk through the glass. They get so defensive when I have questions or concerns, to the point that it feels like intimidation. I just feel so constricted, and I am very concerned about why I am not allowed to go in and assess what is going on with my loved one's care.

Avalon House on Gerard Court was an older house and not in the best condition. The bathroom was a little scary. And the kitchen looked kind of run down. Their response to the kitchen was "Well your mother would never be in the kitchen." But the food still gets cooked in there. And that was concerning to me.

I would tell others looking that Avalon House has many locations, so I would check each one of them out in your area. The staff vary at each place, I would not rate the staff at this particular location high. Our family did not have a good experience here.

I was very pleased with the dementia care provided for my husband. He had a pleasant, sunny room and the staff was efficient and wonderfully caring and supportive. Whenever I visited, I found that my husband was clean and dressed in well laundered clothes. I was particularly happy that other residents did not go into his room and remove his books and other items which occurred in an earlier memory care facility. The staff were very helpful in giving him the workbooks and puzzles I brought for him as long as he was able to do them. The best part of my husband's stay, especially for me, was the fact that he was in a house, not an institution.

They were close and had availability when I needed it. It was not good at all.

This place is in a very expensive Great Falls neighborhood with a bad house plan. Lower level with two bedrooms only reached by elevated chair. Lower deck (with steep cliff) is closed off. Upstairs is cramped -- one person sitting in LR, bedrooms off to sides. Cramped kitchen/dining area. No activities on site -- people have to go to government-run senior center. This place is so overpriced at $4,500.

Probably ok for Alzheimer's residents, but was not a friendly place for my mother that was bedridden. Staff treated her as an annoyance without any warmth.

Facility was filthy. My father passed away there last month. Hospice never came in, even though called. My father was allowed to starve and dehydrate in this facility. Blood on walls, dirty sheets and floors. Absolutely no care whatsoever unless expressly asked for. He had remained in one position for so long that one of his eyes was sunken into his face when I and my siblings arrived. Had to ask repeatedly for him to have some hydration in some form but this was never given. Would never, ever recommend. Place was chosen by his spouse, who also did nothing to help him, however, I would think the facility would have intervened instead of allowing his pre-mature death.
