Talked to the director of community services. She answered most of my questions. Both Brighten and Sunrise sound like good possibilities. I think my mom and dad might like the country setting of Brighten more. Starting rates at about $6100/month with another $630/month additionally for medication care and more if dad is provided with some sort of memory care. I need to find out about financial help as he is a veteran. Also need to ask mom about whether or not they have long term health insurance.

This is an Assisted Living home with roughly 100 residents, about 1/4 of whom have Alzheimer's. The Remembrance unit keeps the Alz residents from wandering, and the caregivers in that area were very, very kind to the residents we saw while there. Seemed to be trained in dementia-care (as opposed to just elder-care). The visit went on a little too long, but we got a good look at the facility. Odors in some areas, and the 2nd and 3rd floor hallways were really confusing even to us. No colors to help guide you to certain hallways, everything is the same color, yellow. Home has a resident dog - Peyton. Kind of cool, unless you don't like dogs, or are allergic to them. Residents can have pets as long as they take care of them. More expensive than other places we have seen. Levels of care as needed are added to your bill. Outdoor area for Alz residents was small and not conducive to walking for exercise. Unfortunately, the Alz area was also not built to the new specs of dementia research; needs short, wide hallways with a window or door at the end, color-coded areas and doors to identify their room or their area for starters. Training for caregivers is done on site. Doctors see them in their room. Beauty salon was nice and inviting. Dining area was also nice and open with great older music playing (big band). Many residents were downstairs in the community area. Well-groomed and waiting for visitors. It's an assisted living facility really, with an area for Alz since many people end up with that disease, but the plan is really to leave people alone (independence) instead of addressing alzheimer's head-on with proven methods of care. Their selling point is that they design the care around the resident - whatever their needs are, they will be taken care of.
