This facility may not be the best overall in this area, but was basically perfect for my mother. She is on oxygen and the staff delivered her meals and did not pressure her to do any on-site activities. This made my mother more comfortable. She had the same aids and maids and nurses week to week. Which made her more comfortable dealing with the same people and getting used to them with her dementia.

He was happy

My husband was In memory care ,on hospice, for several months.he graduated to assisted living a year after he entered memory care.nothing short of a miracle.care at karolwood was adequate.....I made sure I visited several times a week. They became like family.he made it his home.everyone loved him .now that he has passed away on march15,2024...I am having troubles resolving getting refund back after we cleared the room.contract states 60 days.....we're way over that.im hoping this issue resolves with corporate soon.hate to end this experience on a low note.

Our Experience

My loved one and I were previously residents at Karolwood Gardens of Portsmouth and overall, the experience was pretty good. The food was good at first and then it became terrible. There was also constant rotation in the management staff. I liked the set up of the facility, with the small neighborhoods. The 2 bedroom suite was nice. I liked having the microwave, fridge and freezer. They kept our apartment clean, but there were other areas that weren't. The laundry rooms were dirty and clothes got left in there when the staff did laundry. Some other floors and public rooms weren't very clean. Some staff were friendly and some were not. Then there were the groups that met outside, left the pagers inside and didn't respond to resident calls. That was one of the most frustrating things. We didn't get involved in very many activities. I did go to the exercise class, which was good. There was a problem with my loved one getting his meds in a timely, regular time. The price was pretty good.

I think the facility is good for my mother, yes some things could be better but overall I am pleased. We picked this community, because of the price and I thought it would be a good match for my mother and her needs.

Tour experience

We toured with Karolwood Gardens and it was too small (resident size) and seemed under-resourced. It was a bit depressing as well.

Good Community for the Most Part

My mother is doing pretty well with her move to this community. The location of the community is very convenient for me to travel to. For the most part I know she is safe, and receiving good care. Most of the staff is good, they are kind, helpful. Everything is working in a positive direction for us here at this community, and I would recommend it.

My Aunt Likes It Here, She Is Doing Well

My aunt really likes it here at this community. She has adjusted well to it, and I'am satisfied with her move here. I know she is being cared for well, they have a wonderful staff here. They are very friendly and helpful. There activities available for her when she is ready to participate. She is pleased with the meals. It's a nice looking community, they do a good job with the cleanliness. They have great room options. I would recommend this community, it is a great place.

More of a "retirement" community

It was really nice, what we had decided though was number one, my daughter in laws mother couldn't afford it and it ended up being pretty far away. Most of it was like a retirement with people that were able to care for themselves so it really wasn't the right place for her.

Quality of Care has recently declined

Overall experience - during last few months there because they wanted to get him out of there even though he rarely left his room. Friendliness of staff was good for nursing and meal provision staff. Front office person was the difficult person to deal with. Quality of care - great to start and poor during last few months. Meals/dining were pretty good but they wouldn't pull him out of room to eat with others. He has to be prompted or he will stay in room alone and eat. Activities - fair - again, people rarely pulled him out of the room to encourage to attend. If he said he didn't care to go they left him alone. With elderly people, unless they're sick or don't feel well, you sometimes have to give more encouragement to leave their room. First 9 months were pretty good as far as with all staff but last 3 months were the worst

Caring nursing staff/terrible food

There is good and bad with Karolwood. let’s start with the positive. The nurses and most all of the aids have been very helpful and caring when it comes to caring for my mom. They are also extremely friendly to me when I come in there, which is almost daily. For the negative, we first have the dated decor. I think if they spent a few dollars to update the place with some new carpet and fresh paintings on the walls, it would give the place a much better first impression. The other negative is the food. They are very stingy with the amount of food you get and it is often not hot. If you decide you don’t want their main lunch or dinner item, you can opt for an alternate. And that means chicken noodle soup from a can or a grilled cheese with stale bread.

Review for Karolwood Gardens Norfolk

Staff has poor communication with families regarding issue/concerns from family. We picked this community for our loved one, because of the rate price lock for life. Nice community , poor communication skills with Director and Nursing staff. I would recommend to other families. The marketing director is fantastic.

The Jury is still out

My loved one lives at this facility and there are still a few issues that we are working on. Her apartment is so much superior to so many other facilities that we looked at and is more affordable. The monthly fee is a flat rate. They were actually so desperate for residents that they gave my loved one a lifetime rate when she signed/moved in. Moving into a facility was a big adjustment for my loved one and I feel like this facility had a less than ideal approach to that. The Executive Director is hard to deal with and very strict, but we've done it. Logically so, but it's been hard to take it all in and act accordingly. The strict setting has been an adjustment, but everyone has adapted. The building had a change of ownership to a private equity company over a year ago and renovations began and are still ongoing. To me, private equity and healthcare do not go together at all. This facility agreed to being able to accommodate a special diet due to the medical needs of my loved one. We're working with her Doctor and the dietician at the facility to be able to find a way to successfully accommodate the special diet, that is still ongoing. They've seemingly gone out of their way to try to accommodate it, but it's been a process and it's still ongoing. I don't think that I would recommend this facility to family and friends, all things considered. Not right now, at least.

Not Family Friendly

My wife was in the Lakewood (Memory Care) section of Province Place of DePaul, with middle to late-stage Alzheimer's. To the caregivers, housekeeping, maintenance, activities, kitchen, all the staff, for their care and service I give an A-plus (5+ stars). They provide excellent, friendly care and service. But concerning Family Relations, I'm assigning the new director a D-minus (1.5 stars), which brings my overall rating for Province Place of DePaul down to only 3.5 stars. I'm assuming that this is the new director's first time overseeing an assisted living facility, and hoping that she will improve with experience. Granted, my wife died on Thanksgiving day, with Friday being another day off for some workers, but refusing to allow a husband to enter Friday and remove needed furniture for out of state relatives arriving for the funeral was, to say the least, not good family relations. And then simply not responding to an emailed request for access on Saturday, Sunday or Monday compounded the offense. My wife's bed could have easily been taken out within about 15 minutes, giving me the needed extra bed at home. As it turned out, though, my son bought a cot so he had a place to sleep after driving all the way from Wisconsin to attend the funeral. Again I say that I only hope experience will improve the director's consideration for family members.

Province Place provided good care for mother. The main complaint I have is that apparently there is a shady deal going on with the pharmacy they use. I received a bill for medicine 5 months after she left for a signifiCan't amount of money. My mom virtually had medicine with no co-pay prior to that. Province did not notify me of this situation.

The residents were scarce -...

The residents were scarce - but pleasant, the facility fine, and the staff available to answer questions. My overall feeling seemed to be a less enthusiastic and cohesive spirit visible within the facility and an administration not on equal status as other facilities. I am not sure that I agree with the smaller community concept which I didn't see as a good fit for my relative.
