Our experience at San Marino was not a good one.

My mother fell several times during her stay there with little supervision even in the memory care place. We had to pay for 24 hour private care to keep her safe. The management was no help and blamed everything on my mom. The staff were caring but way understaffed. I would not recommend that facility to anyone who can't totally care for themselves

how to ask better questions

Based on our experience so far, San Marino Retirement Community can rethink their leadership. They could also staff the units appropriately to support their residents living there.

This tour did not go well as they did not get the communication from a Place For Mom that told them I had an appointment. A person there kindly showed me around, but then said they didn't have any rooms available

Look closer - sub par care

We had the same first impression as the previous reviewer, and actually did place our loved one there for awhile. Everything seemed great when the resident doesn't really need their "assistance" Very much. Then everything changes and they just want to get rid of the problem. I think it stems from the top. The director there seemingly just wants to deal with any issues by making them go away - as in telling the resident/family they should leave. We were also not impressed with the care supervisor (I think they call it wellness center). Medication charts were not up to date, there was confusion amongst the staff. The individual care givers were nice enough but training seems to be lacking. I understand they are building a memory care/expansion now. I hope the wellness center supervisor isn't in charge of that. Those residents have even more needs, and I think it would be a disaster. We are very happy that Dad is out of this facility.

Beware of first appearances and promises

My mother in law has been a resident here for nearly 3 years. When she was transferred to the assisted living section; we were told that she was assessed at the highest rate. They lied. The services has gotten worse ; it takes 35 min. for them to take her to the bathroom. By that time; she is sitting in soiled depends. She is constantly being treated for UTI's. The aides don't treat her with respect. And, to top it off; they increased her fees $600+ additional per month. They said laundry is included: I wash her personal clothes; and all she gets is sheets washed once a week. They started charging her more for taking her to the bathroom (which HAS NEVER changed since she began living there)...They subjectively added points (which they hide behind instead of flat fees for services rendered) because she gets upset easily. Anyone would be upset if they take their time to answer her call. I even got a panic call from her because they left her in her room without any clothes on. I am constantly her advocate; I intervene on her behalf and always try for positive solutions. Last week the aide took her call button away; and threatened to take her cell phone as well.

When we toured the Atrium we were told of all the activities they do as the object was to keep the residents active and out of their rooms. The year my dad was there the activities leaved something to be desired; this is not the place for your loved one if they like to be active and socialize. There a few extremely nice people at the Atrium however the nasty ones out weigh the nice ones. On several occasions I was told I would get a call back and never did, I was left on hold and forgotten and stood at the desk while employees were texting on their cell phones. Worst of all and most alarming is it appears the staff is not trained for emergencies. My dad hated the Atrium and could not wait to get out of there. He is now in a wonderful facility that he loves and could not be happier. Do your homework before signing on the dotted line at the Atrium Village.

I don't recommend The Atrium; better options available

They seemed friendly and helpful enough at first; however, over time, the lack of quality staff and food became more evident. Also, communication is very difficult with regards to the business aspect of the facility. Seems there are too many hands in the pot and none want to make a decision. My dad was at The Atrium for a year and did not like it. We were able to move him to another facility where he is very happy. The professionalism of the staff, the food, and the communication are all superior now to what we found at The Atrium. I wouldn't recommend The Atrium. Keep looking around for something better; your loved one deserves that!

Seniors and famiies beware

If I could give negative stars to rate this company, I would. Artegan purchased the Lodge in Sisters, OR, in the fall of [date removed]. My mother moved in in [date removed], with assurances that when her funds were depleted, she would be able to stay on Medicaid. In [date removed] a letter was sent to residents and families informing us that the facility would no longer provide (any) medical assistance and was giving up its license effective in [date removed]. My mother is at the end of her life on hospice and we must move her again within less than 2 months. Further, there are 15 residents in the facility on Medicaid, who are no longer eligible for services. Yet, the company has continued to encourage new residents up to the day of their announcement that they would no longer be provided assisted living servies. Shame on you, Artegan!

Money over compassion

The executive director [name removed] doesn’t listen to the concerns of the residents nor does she care for their health, I actually rarely see her associating with them. Every time I visited my grandfather there was only one aide on the floor to assist a lot of residents. The aides are burnt out and complain that management doesn’t care. The residents also voiced that [name removed] is someone they would prefer to avoid due to her attitude. For her to be in her position for so long you would think higher management one of them being [name removed] would be involved enough in the community to take action on these extreme concerns but instead they only care about the money your family member brings, they get rid of good people too my grandfather loved the dining manager they had there, she was amazing & genuinely cared about the residents. if you care for your family member don’t bring them here.

Beware

The sales people present the place as much better than it is. They even signed my name on a financial agreement. At the time we left there that were charging as much as [community removed]. I have pictures of the filth in my husband's room before we moved him. It was bad. I recommend you stay away from Normandy Park.

Total incompetence

Management at San Marino are horrible. The roof leaked over my mother's bed. We reported it in April and May and June and they finally did something when she moved from independent living to assisted living - in September. My mother needed nursing help. San Marino uses third parties for this, which is normal. But San Marino repeatedly gave the wrong number to these third parties multiple times, causing delays in care. San Marino management first blamed me ("You're hard to reach") then blamed the 3rd parties ("We gave them your correct number, they must have written it down wrong.") They failed to send me invoices, and when they did finally send me "invoices" they were fabricated and contained incorrect information. I had the owner talk to his accountant to square this away. I asked the owner "when your accountant tells you I'm correct, will you apologize to me?" and he said "NO!". I was correct and he was true to his word. He didn't apologize. Don't put your loved ones here.

Our families experience

While our loved one a resident there, they were secluded. She ate by herself, there were not activities, they did not have staff there and they staff they did have were rude and not friendly. We would not recommend this community. Our loved one would spit out the food because it was so bad. We would also have to walk around the entire community to hunt down the staff if we needed something and it was really expensive.

The head nurse at the Atrium, [Removed], is extremely rude to both staff and family members. She pretty much runs the show, so sadly most staff members are very unhappy working there and there is a high turnover of employees. I moved my father out after a short stay.Perhaps the Atrium would be a better place if she were not there. Unfortunately, corporate does not seem to care either and as a result I do not recommend the Atrium under any circumstances. I believe that the head nurse of an assisted living facility should be more caring and do what is best to make the residents and their families as comfortable as possible. I absolutely do not recommend The Atrium...it looks good on the outside but it is way below average on the inside.

Do not put your loved one in the memory care unit, Legacy Court at Atrium Village. They are the "Forgotten People." There are very few activities for the residents. All they do is sit around all day doing nothing....such a waste. The general manager wants nothing to do with this unit and spends as little time and money as possible to make it a better place. He only concentrates on the independent living side of the building. The unit is dark and dingy and quite depressing. I moved my mother out after several unexcused falls and a rapid decline both physically and mentally. She is now in a new facility with good care and plenty of activities and is much happier! If you care about your loved one, please go elsewhere!

Money

They were all about money as opposed the health and welfare of individuals they smiled as they took your money and some of the charges were just ungodly. They’d put these charges on you when you had no other choice. I’d really recommend people to find some other option.

Looks can be deceiving.

More interested in staff schedules than patient care. Spent more in hospital bills due to incompetence of staff. Spent more than $5000 for about 15 days. If the assessments been honest, we could have saved money and heart break.

Atrium Village is Terrible

My mother lived at Atrium for years. I wouldn't recommend Atrium Village for the care of your enemy, let alone your loved one. I understand these places are in business to make a profit, but this is obscene. They place money above the welfare of their residents, without exception. Don't put your loved one in here. Find someplace better.
